Principal’s Message

Welcome back scholars!  I hope you found time to count all of your blessings during the Thanksgiving holiday and enjoy an extended weekend.  The fresh blanket of snow greeting us Saturday morning seemed to make the weekend feel just a little bit longer.  Consider the snowfall a perfect reminder to stay tuned for subsequent weather related delays or school closure information.  Please follow the decision for the Highline School District. Typically, the information for a school delay or closure is available by 5:30AM from all of the local news channels or radio stations.
Three cheers to all the students, parents, and staff who participated in last week’s student-led conferences.  Our 9th grade teachers touted the success of a new approach to better connect with students and families.  If you walked away from the conferences with a deeper understanding of your academic strengths and weaknesses and evidence about your progress toward meeting graduation requirements, then please know the time was wisely invested. Becoming aware of what needs to be done to get on track and taking the initiative to ask for your teachers’ help are ways to model self-advocacy.
Our school culture places tremendous value on the practice of self-advocacy. We believe the benefits extend far beyond the walls of RAHS. As a starting point, communicate your needs and concerns with your teachers.  RAHS teachers monitor progress data regularly and display an array of amazing talents, but they do not read minds. Your initiative and shared perspective widens the bridge of understanding between you and your teacher.  It seems simple, but self-advocacy, like swimming, cannot be learned by reading about it.  Use the evidence from your academic track record and teachers’ feedback to guide you in becoming a better self-advocate.

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Ms. Ciccone-Cook—for spearheading the changes to 9th grade Student Led Conferences.

9th grade teachers—for being willing to try a new approach to Student Led Conferences.

Karl Nielsen—for providing superb technical assistance at every assembly and school-wide function.

Dana Husby—for nourishing our teachers with delicious snacks during Student Led Conferences.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly
