Principal’s Message

Welcome back, Scholars, from an extended Memorial Day weekend.  We are now on the fast track to end of year, with only 12 school days remaining for this academic year.  Last day for freshman, sophomores, and juniors is June 13.  Seniors have even fewer days—seven to be exact—with their final day being June 6.  As we make our way toward the closing of the school year, I encourage you to stay the course by preparing well for project presentations and exams.  The evidence of your learning is captured on your transcript, which should demonstrate to college admission personnel that you are ready for the demands of university studies and inform potential employers that you are also work-ready. This isn’t the time of year to slack off and risk not getting into your dream college or taking yourself out of the running for an internship or job.  Prioritize your time, putting your studies first.  It matters!  Just do it! End of lecture.

Friday is our All-School Awards Ceremony at the PAC in Burien.  Please report to your first period class for attendance prior to loading the school buses that will transport us to the PAC.  Remember that no food or beverages or gum are allowed in the PAC.  Please leave your backpack in your first period class and retrieve it when we return to school around noon.  Lunch will be ready when we arrive back at school.  A fun and inspiring afternoon has been planned by Culture Club, with the traditional Rose Ceremony concluding our day.  Plan to enjoy!  And, no jeans please!  Parents and families:  Join us for the day if your schedule permits.  There is plenty of room in the PAC for seating.

A reminder to Seniors and Parents/Families that the Senior Awards Ceremony will be held this Sunday at the Boeing Theater.  Scholarship recipients will be announced and each senior will be honored by an AHS staff member.  We hope to see all seniors at this momentous event!  It’s a tradition that we value and believe that you will, too, as you transition to the next stages of life.  Please join us!  The event starts with a dessert reception at 1:30 PM and the program begins at 2:00 PM.

This year, nine AHS students were accepted into the Washington Aerospace Scholars program, sponsored by the Museum of Flight, WA State Legislature and many aerospace companies throughout the State.   They completed an online space science curriculum, vying for an opportunity to qualify for a one-week summer residency.  Congratulations to Abigail Jarve and Mahekdeep Singh who made the cut and will be among the 160 students in the state who enjoy the summer program at The Museum of Flight.  This is a stellar accomplishment for Mak and Abby to have been selected from a pool of 285 students who started the program last November.  For the first time ever, WAS Scholars will also have the opportunity to earn 5 college credits in Space Science offered through the University of Washington! Go, Scholars!  We are proud of you!

If you haven’t yet heard about Jake Hecla’s continued success at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), please read a summary in the next two paragraphs and join me in congratulating Jake on such an extraordinary accomplishment.  And, to read even more about the competition and see photos of Jake and his team as well as other participants, go to http://home.comcast.net/~garyfoss3/isef2013.html.

PHOENIX--Thirteen student finalists from Washington science & engineering fairs competed at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, AZ on May 12-17, 2013. The Intel ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science competition. This year, more than 1,600 young entrepreneurs, innovators and scientists were selected from 443 affiliate science fairs in 50 states and 70 countries, regions and territories. About 900 judges from academia and industry made the final selections.

The team of Jake Hecla, 18, Aviation High School, Des Moines, Ray Maung, 17, Kentwood High School, Kent, and Rian Chandra, 18, Capitol High School, Olympia won the Second Place Grand Award and $1500 for their project “Investigation of Anisotropic Neutron Production in a Farnsworth lEC Fusion Reactor”. They also won the First Award from the American Coalition for Plasma Science, $1500. In addition, they will each receive the right to name a recently discovered minor planet (asteroid) by the World Astronomical Union.

Congratulations to our Aviation PTSA Ultimate Frisbee Team!  For the High School Coed Spring League, Aviation is the Division C Champion! Following the season games, and the May 11 brackets, Aviation topped other high school Division C teams of  Nova, Chief Sealth, Rainier Beach, Shorecrest, and Bainbridge’s B team.  Yay, Team!  We are proud of you!

For more good news about a LOT of students who have recently been selected for summer internships, please read the Announcements section.  Congratulations to all!  And…congratulations to students who have been selected to attend Embry-Riddle Summer Camps as well as those who will be sponsored by ERAU for a three-day campus/program visit in July.  Enjoy!

And, last but not least, congratulations to our seniors on completion of senior projects!  Many of you have been invited to be part of a Showcase this Thursday.  I look forward to seeing the exemplary projects and commend you on taking your project seriously and demonstrating new learning.

My best to all for an astonishing week of learning!  The week is action-packed with activities. Please remember to prioritize!  I am honored to be your principal.

Can you help to Sponsor A Senior?
Fundraiser for the Class of 2013 Graduation Party
As June approaches, our seniors look toward the end of their high school years at AHS. Capping off a busy day, the Seniors will gather one last time to celebrate four years well done as a class at their Grad Party...the final gathering until they meet again in 2023 for their ten year reunion! Held once again at iFly, this celebration is a safe way for our seniors to cut loose after what is bound to be an emotional day, and has become a welcome tradition at Aviation High School.
But, it sure is an expensive tradition! At a cost of approximately $200 a student, we look for ways to defray the ticket cost for each to attend. We are also paying for several scholarships. We want to make sure every student who wants to attend is able to. Can you help? The Grad Party Committee is asking for donations of any denomination to help "SPONSOR A SENIOR". Whether it be $25 or $250, any amount adds up, and is greatly appreciated. We have several students on scholarship, and are selling tickets for $125 to make it more affordable to attend. So...whatever your student's grade, from freshman to senior, think about making a donation! All checks should be made payable to "AHS PTSA" with "Grad Party" in the memo line. Questions, comments, concerns? Contact Mindy McClean at
mindymacster@hotmail.com or 206.679.8692.

Quote of the Week & aviation history

All the calculations show it can’t work.  There’s only one thing to do: make it work.

-- Pierre Georges Latécoère

On 31 May 1967, two USAF HH3E Sikorsky helicopters takeoff on the first nonstop transatlantic flight by helicopter enroute to the Paris airshow.  Refueling inflight nine times, the flight takes 30 hours and 46 minutes from New York to Paris.
