Aviation High School Named #6 in State by US News & World Report
AHS ranked among the highest in the nation
BURIEN, WA— Aviation High School is ranked as one of the top performing schools in U.S. News and World Report’s Best High School rankings for 2013. The school is ranked as the 6th best high school in Washington State out of 587 public high schools. Aviation High School is ranked #257 in the country out of more than 21,000 public high schools evaluated. Aviation High School is one of just ten Washington schools to receive a Gold Medal in the report.

“Being ranked so high in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report is a great honor and reflects the quality of teaching by our staff, the support of our industry partners, and our remarkable students,” said CEO/Principal Reba Gilman. “This is the first time Aviation High School has received the national gold medal distinction.”
The rankings are based on how well schools serve all their students, calculated first on how students performed on state exams; and secondly, on how well students are prepared for college-level work, measured by Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate participation and test results.

Aviation High School facts:
  • State Rank: 6
  • National Rank: 257
  • Medal Awarded: Gold
  • Proficient in Reading: 99%
  • Proficient in Writing: 97%
  • AP Participation Rate: 76%
  • Student-Teacher Ratio: 23:1

The above is a press release that Highline Public Schools distributed to the media just last week after we received the good news about our Gold Award by U.S. News & World Report.  Congratulations to EVERYONE in our learning community for making it happen!  Parents, I should have included you in my quote, and I’m sorry that I didn’t. We know we could not achieve this type of success without your unyielding commitment and support.

And there’s more good news to report about our students!  Congratulations to:

Ø  Michael Marinkovich, who just passed his "special" private pilot checkride, which was an extra requirement that Michael had to complete because of a medical condition--monocular vision. This is a huge accomplishment for Michael and worthy of great praise! Michael has wanted to be a pilot since forever and has been tenacious in pursuing this goal.  He plans to combine his love of flying with engineering and will be attending Seattle Pacific University in the fall.  Yay, Michael!

Ø  Simon Derrer who has been selected to intern at ERIN AIR this summer, where he will get to help with this charter company’s daily business, and meet with multiple professionals from aviation businesses surrounding King County International Airport. Great job Simon!

Ø  Emma Finnsson, Surbhi Ghadia, Rocco Buty, and Austin Fischer, who will be interning with the Boeing Company this summer! These four students are legacy-makers as they are the VERY FIRST AHS students to be selected for an internship with Boeing.  They will set the standard for excellence, modeling the way for similar experiences for other AHS students.  Special thanks goes to Pam Valdez, a Boeing executive, and her amazing team, for making this possible for our students.

Ø  Jade Jordan, who recently entered the ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) Competition, winning an all-expense paid trip to the National ACT-SO Competition that will be held in Orlando, Florida this July. Jade will be an Observer in the Science Category.  This amazing performer and science whiz combined her passions to do create a PowerPoint on heat shields, with background music, and performed in a Tap Solo that led to top recognition!  Super congratulations, Jade, and good luck at Nationals this summer!

Ø  Our amazing, multi-talented Skunkworks Robotics Team on a great showing at the Championships in St. Louis this past weekend!  Losing only two matches, the Skunks were undefeated during qualifications, ranking #2 on their field.  Two alums, Stephanie Hoag and Navid Shafa, kept me posted through the events, and I saw many more posts from other alums as well as parents and mentors who either traveled to St. Louis to cheer for the team or did so from their comfort of their homes. At the end of the event, Navid texted, “What an incredible season…we won every regional in Washington State and again received the top honor, The Chairman’s Award. We got the maximum number of banners…in the regional season, we had more blue banners than any team in the world! Best season ever!” A tired but elated team returns to school this week, and they deserve a celebration for such an awesome season.  Coaches Steele and Wilson, mentors and parents/families, and team members—congratulations to all of you!  You make us proud

Please read the rest of the NOTAM for additional information and important opportunities.  Make this a great week of learning, and if you are in an AP class, make every minute count as you prepare for your exams that are scheduled from May 6-17.  I am honored to be your principal!
~Reba G.

From Your PTSA

We are looking for a few good people!
Your PTSA is looking for energetic chairpersons and volunteers for next year. Most committees are single events and once it's over there is no other responsibility - some are ongoing and would require more of a commitment. Officer positions will be voted on at the June General meeting.

·         AUCTION - Chair needed ASAP to get ready for next November. This is one of the most important positions and needs several volunteers - possibly a co-chair to assist and work as a team
·         PTSA Membership - busy at beginning of the year, tapers off after
·         Fundraising - ongoing - looking for ideas!
·         Web Site/Communications -  ongoing - Maintain PTSA website throughout the year and sending out weekly NOTAM emails
·         Car Pool Information and coordination - busy at beginning of the year
·         Staff Appreciation - ongoing
·         Volunteer Coordinator - ongoing
·         Move Coordinator - need someone to help coordinate the PTSA portion of the move to the new school
·         Single events (Small amount of time)
·         Seafair/Freshman Event
·         Back to school event (picnic/potluck)
·         Ice Cream Social (end of year)
·         Senior Grad Party - large event for seniors. Planning should start at beginning of school year. Senior parent to work with ASB.

PTSA Officer Positions: co-positions also for all but the treasurer (cashier). If anyone is interested as a co-officer this would help with transitions from year to year. An officer is only allowed to hold a position for 2 years. So if we can get second officers for next year then we can start a rotation and maintain our objectives as one moves off another will continue.

·         PTSA President / Co-President
·         Vice President / Co-Vice President
·         Secretary / Co-Secretary
·         Treasurer / Cashier

If you need information about what the position entails please contact Nancy Wing
