Principal’s Message:

Thank you to everyone who warmly greeted and interacted with visitor Scott Carson, former CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and his associates from WSU last Friday. As a donor who is helping us construct our new school, Scott and his wife Linda are greatly impressed with the work that is being accomplished at Aviation High School and a few other small learning communities in our state. He is backing a research project to gather data about the elements of schools such as ours that may impact the way future teachers are prepared to teach. We will keep you informed as we learn more about the project and determine a schedule for your participation.
Tomorrow (Tuesday), Dr. Tom Shih, head of Purdue’s aeronautics and astronautics department, will be visiting our school.  Ms. Carper has been promoting a session for those interested in meeting with Dr. Shih, so I hope to see many of you in Room 2 from 10:15-10:55 a.m. James Raisbeck is a Purdue alum and will be accompanying Dr. Shih. 
Last Friday, our entire country was devastated by the tragedy that occurred in a small community in Connecticut. As we prepare to celebrate the holidays ahead, I ask that we hold the educators, the children, the parents and families, and the citizens of Newtown, CT in our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers. In your first period class today, please take a minute of silence in memory of those who were involved in the tragedy, and in hope that we can find solutions for a more peaceful and safe environment in which to learn, work, and live. And, please know that the entire AHS staff is committed to your safety and well being.  If you are feeling a need to talk, please don’t hesitate to initiate a conversation with one of us or with Counselor Carper.  We care!
And so...amazing students and families, I wish you the very best as you depart tomorrow for your winter holiday vacation. May you be surrounded by those you love and those who love you. I look forward to seeing you again on January 2^nd and hearing about your holiday travels and experiences. It will be a short week of learning when you return; however, Friday January 4 is a full day of school so please plan accordingly. Parents and guardians: Please expect a robo-call from the district communication office reminding you of this change.

ATTENDANCE NOTES:

·         Attendance Reminder for Parents and Students:   Attendance line 206-878-1259

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.  

·         New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is a change from previous practice.  We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

·         REMINDER for Families Scheduling Summer Vacations--Be prepared for your AHS student to attend school on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The first two days of school prepare your student for a great start to a new school year!

·         Student Athletes— please remember to check in weekly with your advisor and notify them of your participation status.  All winter athletes who did not participate in a fall sport must pick up their ALE paperwork this week from Mr. Kelly.

Thanks once again for your generosity:  Interact club members Dustin Werren and Liam Burke selected $200 worth of toys from Toys R Us which filled two gigantic shopping bags and another bag was filled with donated toys from students and staff. You’ve made a lot of children and their parents happy this season!

New Internship Opportunity with AcuWings:      

New Internship!  Two volunteer part time internships for students who want to become pilots or work in aviation business with AcuWings, a charter company at Renton Municipal Airport.  No age requirement, can start now with more  hours in the summer.  Must provide your own transportation and be reliable.  More information at www.aviationhscareers.org or on the Career bulletin board.  Application deadline is January 31, 2013.

·         Adopt-A-Family: A huge thank you to everyone who donated gifts to our adopted family. We really appreciate your support. Your donations will help make this holiday season an especially memorable one for our adopted family.

·         Write a Letter Day: Students, did you write letters to those you appreciate? You will have today and tomorrow to trade letters.  REMEMBER THAT IT ONLY TAKES A SMALL STEP (LIKE WRITING A LETTER) THAT CAN MAKE AN IMPACT ON SOMEONE'S LIFE!

·         Canned Food Drive: In the past couple weeks, with all of your help, we were able to collect 220 cans! Once again, you have shown that this is the season of giving! Well done!

·         Jostens Leadership Conference: Did you turn in your application? The ASB officers will be going through all of your applications this week. You will hear back from us after winter break, so keep an eye out! 

·         Spirit Shack: Students, $5 Friday is opening again this year at an even closer location...YOUR SCHOOL CAFETERIA! ASB will be selling AHS apparel every Friday during lunch. You can purchase AHS apparel, and if you have an ASB card, will receive a 25% discount on all items. You must show ASB members your ID in order to get the discount. Also, we are selling lanyards, water bottle, AHS tube socks, and T-Shirts for $5 Friday

Culture Club is hosting a Winter Wonderland talent show, January 25, 2013.

We are looking for musicians, actors, dancers, comedians, martial artists, visual artists, gymnasts, and more to show off what they can do. Clubs can perform as well as a way of building and celebrating your community/team spirit! We have had wonderful lip syncs and group dance numbers done in the past. They were the highlight of the show and we’d love to have you perform!  Sign up for auditions in Room 24.

Two paid internships are offered with HOBART MACHINED PRODUCTS for students interested in manufacturing engineering, business and quality control.  Juniors are given priority with sophomores and seniors considered.  Interns can start part time now but bulk of the internship will be this summer; location is east of Covington- 45 minutes south and east of AHS.  More information on AHS Career website, bulletin board and from Mrs. Burr. Application deadline is Friday, January 4, 2013.

The NW Aviation Conference & Trade Show will be held February 23 & 24 at the Puyallup Fair Grounds.  Aviation High School has “manned” a display table each year since 2004, with our Wingman Extraordinaire Tamera Nason organizing student participation.  Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the event.

Speak Up 2012 Survey--from now until Friday, December 21, the Speak Up 2012 Survey is open.  As a component of the Speak Up National Research Project, the Speak Up survey collects and reports data on STEM-related topics and the use of educational technology. The survey audience is K-12 students, their families, educators, administrators, and the ed tech staff, like yourself, who support technology-enriched teaching and learning. All Washington schools — public, private, tribal and online— are registered, so that staff and students can complete the 20-minute survey. You’ll find multiple choice and open-ended questions. Association of Computer Professionals in Education (ACPE) Scholarships these scholarships are available to graduation high school seniors who have been actively involved in the use of technology during their high school careers and are planning to pursue studies in a technology related field. Imagine Tomorrow More than $100,000 in cash prizes will be awarded this May to schools and students in the sixth annual Imagine Tomorrow competition at Washington State University. The head of Purdue’s astro and aero department will be here to make the presentation. Come with your questions!

·         Sophomores and Juniors: Each summer Yale offers highly selective, two-week academic and leadership experiences for exceptional high school students. Formerly the Yale Ivy Scholars Program, it has been renamed Yale Young Global Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students to better reflect the international focus of the program. Now in its twelfth year, the program draws together a diverse group of students from all over the world to live on Yale's campus, learn from Yale faculty, and analyze and debate key ideas about law, government, economics, history, and grand strategy.  Visit the website for more details.

Attention Junior Women:  Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experience for female high school juniors from across the U.S., culminating in a one-week residential experience at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Offered at no cost to the student, WISH consists of eight online modules and a final project from January 2013 through May 2013 under the guidance of certified educators.  Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a weeklong summer experience where they will interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars.  Additionally throughout the online portion and summer experience, these young women will be introduced to NASA female role models who will share their education and career paths.  Please visit project website for additional information and the application, www.wish.aerospacescholars.org. Principal’s Message:

Thank you to all student ambassadors who have assisted with marketing and recruitments efforts this year.  We concluded our presentations to middle school students last week and have just one more Information Program for 8^th Graders & Families, which is scheduled for January.  Applications are coming in each day for the Class of 2017, and we again expect a large applicant pool.  We will interview during February and March and send out letters of invitation during the first week of April. 

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected for Phase I of the Washington Aerospace Scholars program, sponsored by the Museum of Flight in collaboration with the Washington State Legislature and various companies within the region: Anthony Ayson, Rocco Buty, Mike Huynh, Brian Huynh, Abby Jarve, Ramneet Kaur, Miguel Laigo, Mahekdeep Singh, and Lillian Taite Stewart. We wish you the very best during the online part of the program and look forward to a spring announcement of your participation in the summer residency! 

Last Thursday, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Burr and I had the pleasure of attending the Pacific Northwest Business Aircraft Association’s (PNBAA) annual holiday meeting and reception, which was held at the Museum of Flight.  We were accompanied by Austin Spores, Austin McHenry, Jimmy Nguyen, Riley Tetzloff, and Ellen Jetland, each who shared their education and career goals and their summer internship experiences.  Their presentations were so inspiring that other PNBAA members in attendance are coming forth to offer internships in their businesses.  Look for more exciting announcements of opportunities from Ms. Burr as the school year progresses! At this meeting, we were also presented a check for $10,000 (a real one and a big cardboard one that is shown in the picture below) for scholarship awards to students in the Class of 2013! The PNBAA has been holding a charity golf tournament each year and naming Aviation High School as their #1 choice to share their generosity. We are so very fortunate to have such extraordinary partnerships with our friends in the aviation and aerospace workforce. Seniors…look forward to hearing more about the PNBAA award when the AHS scholarship packet is released in the spring.

·         Jostens Leadership Conference Are you interested in attending this year's Jostens Leadership Conference? The Jostens Leadership Conference is an annual event where students from schools all around Washington State come together to gain a fresh perspective on what it means to be a leader. There will guest speakers, spirit competitions between schools, and just endless fun. This year's conference is on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Hazen High School.  Applications are available in Mrs. Fitzpatrick’s room (22) and in the Main Office; they are due by 3:30 p.m. this Wednesday, December 12!   45 students will be chosen to attend. Transportation will be provided and attendees will be asked to pay a $15 fee which includes a t-shirt and lunch. Scholarships are available –everyone interested should apply.  Talk to Mrs. Fitzpatrick if you have any questions or concerns. Grab your application and apply now to attend this fun-filled day. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

·         The December Advisory Competition is ON! Are you ready for another competition? The December theme is “Gingerbread House” and will be held on Wednesday, December 12. ASB will provide gingerbread house kits to each advisory. Everyone participates, get creative, and bring materials from home for your gingerbread house.  We can't wait to see your ADVISORY creative side!

This event spans over two days, December 17 & 18, in case someone forgets to trade their letters on the first day. • Poetry Slam --Thank you to all of our participants and to all of you who came to listen and appreciate some amazing poetry! Congratulations to our winners: Katie McConville, Cyprus Richardson, and Amy Parker! Honorable Mention was awarded to Gabby Rivera, Vincent Pierce, and Micheal Torrey. A special thanks to our judges as well, including Mr. Hoehne and Mrs. Fitzpatrick.

• ASB Meetings--Have you ever wondered what happens during an ASB Meeting? Our group meets every Wednesday during lunch and Advisory in Mrs. Fitzpatrick’s room. Stop in sometime and listen to our conversation. You can even help provide input! Our meetings are public and we invite you to join us. Learn more about your student leaders and how you can help support activities that are happening right here on campus.

The Interact Club has been asked by leaders at Madrona Elementary School to help by donating an item (toy/game/book) for low income students for the upcoming holidays.  There are so many children right in our own communities who have too little to look forward to during the holidays; the need is higher than ever this year. If you can bring one item, you will make a difference for one girl or boy. Please bring your donated toy/game/book to Mrs. Burr’s office in the Career Center. Deadline is Dec.11^th. Your support is greatly appreciated!

On Sunday, November 11^th, Aviation High sophomore Andy Beal and the Boeing Employee’s Concert Band played at the Museum of Flight in honor of our veterans.  Their annual Veteran’s Day concert played to a full auditorium - pieces included the “Armed Forces Salute”, “Sinatra in Concert”, “Big Band Favorites” and “America the Beautiful”.  Membership in the Boeing Concert Band, conducted by Alexei Girsh, is open to all Boeing employees, vendors and their family members, in addition to students being mentored by Boeing employees.  Their concert season typically consists of venues such as parks, the Ballard Locks, the Museum, and schools in the Puget Sound area.  As part of the Boeing Concert Band, Andy will earn fine art credit toward graduation upon completing a Fine Arts contract.  Their next concert will be held December 15^th at the Museum of Flight – all are welcome. Check their website for future dates:  http://www.becb.org/

December Skunkworks Parent Meeting; Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30 PM staff lounge.

Parents will discuss the final planning for the competition season, including travel and lodging.  Kickoff is Saturday January 5, 2013. Final car pool arrangements will be covered for the kickoff. We will also have an update on fundraising including the Business Outreach Program and the Letter Writing Campaign.

·         Sophomores and Juniors: Each summer Yale offers highly selective, two-week academic and leadership experiences for exceptional high school students. Formerly the Yale Ivy Scholars Program, it has been renamed Yale Young Global Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students to better reflect the international focus of the program. Now in its twelfth year, the program draws together a diverse group of students from all over the world to live on Yale's campus, learn from Yale faculty, and analyze and debate key ideas about law, government, economics, history, and grand strategy.  Visit the website for more details.

Attention Junior Women:  Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experience for female high school juniors from across the U.S., culminating in a one-week residential experience at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Offered at no cost to the student, WISH consists of eight online modules and a final project from January 2013 through May 2013 under the guidance of certified educators.  Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a weeklong summer experience where they will interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars.  Additionally throughout the online portion and summer experience, these young women will be introduced to NASA female role models who will share their education and career paths.  Please visit project website for additional information and the application, www.wish.aerospacescholars.org.
