Principal’s Message

As I reflect on our previous week of learning and anticipate the goodness of this week, the sun is brightly streaming through my window, reassuring me that Spring really has arrived.  A rose bush in my back yard is also in full bloom, giving the rest of the yard (which needs some work), a much welcomed burst of color.  And, I’m looking forward to spending this Easter day with family and friends, knowing that I am truly blessed in all the ways that matter most. Life is good!  And, it is obviously GREAT for many within our AHS family, most notably:

·         Team 1983, our Aviation High School Skunkworks Robotics Team, who again took 1st place at the Seattle Regionals this past weekend!  Coach Steele said:  “The cheer that went up from the AHS student body on Friday was simply amazing!!  They were truly our “12th man” and we carried that support with us for the entire competition.“   It was a momentous win in that during the entire competition, our team won every match except for one.  They performed consistently and precisely, providing stellar support to each of their alliances, and giving encouragement to approximately 15 rookie teams who made their debut at this event, hoping for a spot in International Competition. Members of the team also helped out at a Jr. FLL event at the same time.  They showed very young students around and helped judge their event.  In addition to first place overall, the Skunks also won the coveted Regional Chairman’s Award which is the highest award given at a regional. You make us proud, Skunks, and we wish you the best this weekend in Spokane.  Kudos to everyone within the Skunks family!  It was awesome to watch you perform on Friday, with our entire student body cheering you on.  Could you hear us?  “Who are We?  Skunkworks!”

·         Twenty-six AHS ambassadors, accompanied by staff members Ms. Fitzpatrick and Ms. Wombold, who represented Aviation High School at the very first “We Day” in the United States, held last Wednesday at Key Arena in downtown Seattle!  With first row-row seating, they had an up close view of all the speakers and entertainers on stage, and could clearly hear the shout out by the MC for their volunteerism in supporting a number of worthy causes.  They even made the news, which you can view at http://q13fox.com/2013/03/28/we-day-success-2/#axzz2OndPaF6X.  Thank you again, Channel 13!

·         An additional twenty students, who also made the news recently for providing feedback to Boeing leaders about a new iPad flight application that will be used to train professional pilots.  This exciting story can be accessed at http://www.komonews.com/home/video/200462591.html.

·         One hundred fifteen Seniors, ACE Club members, and AHS staff who were the first to fly on a brand new Boeing 737-ER900 airplane last Wednesday, courtesy of Alaska Airlines!  Thanks to all of you for conducting yourselves in a professional manner and showing gratitude to the entire flight crew and other Alaska and Boeing representatives.  Special thanks to Captain John Sluys who continues to advocate for AHS flights, and to Captains William Korrin, Sid Graham, and John Wright who also serve as mentors and supporters.  (Note: You will be given a name and address this week to write a thank you letter to a representative of Boeing or Alaska Airlines; please make sure you write it this week and turn it in to Ms. Suiaunoa no later than Friday.)

·         Ellen Jetland, who received word last week that she has been accepted to the Do-IT Scholars program at the University of Washington!  Ellen will spend two weeks on the UW campus this July, and will then receive continuing support through her senior year of high school to enhance her preparedness for college and a STEM pathway.  Ellen receives a laptop for this program with accessible software that the UW selects.  Congratulations, Ellen, on your selection as a 2013 Do-IT Scholar!  I do believe you are the very first person in the history of AHS to receive this prestigious award.  We are very proud of you!

·         And, to all students who participated in the Boeing Job Shadow Day last week, kudos to you, too!  Please share what you learned with fellow students and staff.

·         And, more students received internship offers last week!  Read Announcements section for details and keep checking with Ms. Burr for opportunities.

Students and families:  When you think of the early years of Aviation, who do you think of besides the Wright Brothers?  If you are like me and millions of other women, the name “Amelia” and her legendary career as a woman aviator come instantly to mind.  The romance, the mystery, the adventure, the passion of Amelia stirs our blood and reminds us that courageous women like Amelia are needed more than ever to inspire current and future generations of women to follow similar, or related STEM pathways, that enhance the aerospace industry and keep our economy strong.  So…do you know that the Museum of Flight (MoF) has launched a $1.5 million campaign to bring a replica of the plane that Amelia flew—the Lockheed Electra Model 10-E—to be the centerpiece of a permanent Amelia Earhart Exhibit in the MoF gallery?  One of our outstanding sophomores, Jaclyn Wing, was so intrigued with the project when she learned about it last summer that she is spearheading an AHS campaign to raise $25,000, which will be matched by a trustee of the Museum.  While I don’t normally do a Call to Action in my weekly messages, I am heartily doing so for this very important cause.  I am encouraging anyone who loves Amelia and believes that a permanent exhibit in the Great Gallery at the MoF will be inspirational for all, to give what you can.  Checks can be written to Aviation High School PTSA, and memo’d to “The Amelia Project”.  The PTSA is a 501c-3, so the donation is completely tax deductible. A receipt will be provided for your donation.  Checks can be mailed to Aviation High School PTSA, P.O. Box 98521; or a donation can be made through the PTSA website http://www.aviationptsa.org/ .  FYI that while donations could be made directly to the Museum, Jaclyn and Aviation High School would not receive credit for them, reducing our match opportunity; so please make your donation through the AHS PTSA.  On behalf of all women—young, middle age, and “mature”—I thank you.  Just think of how exciting it will be to walk across the street from our new school, visit the Amelia exhibit and know that you helped make it possible.

The quarter ended last Friday.  Teachers have until Wednesday to submit their grades, so expect to receive your report cards sometime during the following week.  Here’s hoping that you all had a strong finish to 3rd quarter and that this 4th and final quarter of the 2012-2013 school year will yield the results you intend to achieve.  Make it so!

That’s it for this week!  Next week, April 8-12 is Spring Break, which I hope provides an opportunity for some relaxation and fun with friends and family.   Enjoy this week of learning, and know that I am deeply honored to be your principal.  My best--

~Reba G.

Aviation Day 2013 June 1st

Registration begins March 13, 2013

Together with several business sponsors, Alaska Airlines is once again proud to host the Fifth Annual Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Sea-Tac Airport – Alaska Airlines Flight Operations Building.

This event is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the youth of Puget Sound communities. Aviation Day 2012 will provide the opportunity for high school-aged young adults to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Learning will be accomplished in both a classroom setting and with “hands-on” experiences.

The youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Boeing 737 with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a jet engine with employees who fix them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with those who operate there. Careers as far ranging as air traffic control to airline flight attendant will be discussed throughout the day. Participants will be able to explore just how flights are planned, scheduled and executed. Training facilities will be open for them and engineers will guide them through the construction of aircraft. Several light aircraft and pilots will also be on-site to educate and inspire tomorrow's leaders to take us into the skies of the future.  For more details follow the link: www.alaskaair-aviationday.org/

Imagine Highline: Your Game-Changing Ideas for Our Schools (Message from the superintendent)

Have you seen Highline’s new online discussion forum website, Imagine Highline?  It’s an easy way for staff, students, families, and community members to give input on issues facing our schools.

On Imagine Highline, you can post ideas, comment on others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with fellow community members. It is a way to exchange ideas in a format that fits into our busy lives, knowing we don’t always have time or energy to attend public meetings. We will be talking about all kinds of topics over the coming months.

Our first conversation is about the new strategic plan that will guide our schools for the next three years. The core team of parents, teachers, principals, and district and community leaders building that plan are asking you to participate. They want your ideas and feedback so this will truly be the community’s plan for our schools.

The core team is looking for big ideas to drive a plan that will be a game-changer for Highline students. Imagine Highline is a place where you can share your boldest hopes for our children and our community. What experiences do you want students to have? What should our schools be like? What kind of community do you want to live in, and how can schools make our community all we want it to be?

Go to Imagine Highline and share your game-changing ideas!

Juniors: Sign up with Quest Bridge, an organization that helps students with whose families earn less than $60,000/year reach highly-selective colleges. Visit: http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/students-start-here.

ATTENDANCE NOTES

·         Attendance Reminder for Parents and Students:   Attendance line 206-878-1259

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.

·         New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is a change from previous practice.  We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

·         REMINDER for Families Scheduling Summer Vacations--Be prepared for your AHS student to attend school on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The first two days of school prepare your student for a great start to a new school year!

·         Student Athletes— please remember to check in weekly with your advisor and notify them of your participation status.  All winter athletes who did not participate in a fall sport must pick up their ALE paperwork this week from Mr. Kelly.
