Principal’s Message
We are overflowing with good news announcements this week.  Congratulations go to:
·         Jake Hekla, who competed in the South Sound Regional Science & Engineering Fair this past weekend at Pacific Lutheran University, taking 1st place in Physics and 2nd place Overall.  Jake led a research team with two other high school students to answer a question posed by the North West Nuclear Consortium regarding the emission of neutrons associated with the operation of a Farnsworth Fusor.  His project was titled “Investigation of Anisotropic Neutron Radiation from a Farnsworth IEC Fusion Reactor.”  Jake and his team now have the opportunity for an all-expense paid trip in May to ISEF in Phoenix to present their findings.  Jake’s mentor, Carl Greninger, Program Manager of North West Nuclear Consortium (NWNC), commented, “We, of the NWNC, are particularly gratified at the exemplary discipline, sacrifice and determination these young men showed in both their execution and determination to render accurate and factual data at all points in the project, and applaud their well-deserved success.”  For those who may not know, Jake has built his own Farnsworth Fusor, made with parts scrounged from microwaves and old TVs and machined by Jake himself.  He attained “fusion” just a little over a week ago, and when certified by an independent observer, will join the ranks of “Fusioneer”, becoming part of an exclusive club that includes fewer than twenty 18-year olds across the country.  Congratulations, Jake, on this magnificent scientific achievement!  We are immensely proud of you.
·         Our extraordinary Mr. Scott McComb, who was named the 2013 Bruce Murdock Teacher of the Year at the Central Sound Science & Engineering Fair, held March 7 at Bellevue College.  While we announced this award in last week’s NOTAM, we really didn’t do justice to this honor bestowed on Mr. McComb, primarily due to the nomination by his students, who wrote, “On our very first day of class Mr. McComb told us we needed to start working on a heat shield for a space capsule re-entering Earth’s atmosphere…He broke us into groups and had us start brainstorming.  By the second week of school we were building rocket capsules. If you’d told me I’d be doing that after five days of high school I would have freaked out! But our teacher’s “of course you can” confidence made it seem normal, not at all like rocket science…which it was!  He makes us feel like we can do anything because he is calm and cool and funny – but he also gives us key information or pushes us for more ideas at just the right time to take the next step.”  Sincere congratulations, Mr. McComb! The acrylic award and Kindle Fire that you received are, I’m sure, treasured gifts in recognition of your encouraging your students to tackle real-life science and engineering problems; and yet, I know the real gifts are the students who so appreciate you for facilitating their learning.  Thank you, Mr. McComb for inspiring students!
·         Gloria Whang and Alyda Sorm, who participated in the Annual Washington State Japanese Speech Contest this past Saturday.  Mr. Kumakura reports that both girls did an outstanding job, each with flawless presentation.  Gloria placed 1st in the First Year Division, receiving a grand prize of a trip to Japan in May.  Congratulations, Gloria!  We are proud of you and wish you well.

·         Our Skunkworks Robotics Team for an outstanding first showing at the Inaugural Central Washington Regional this past weekend.  According to Coach Steele, “The team had some ups and downs over the competition, but by Saturday morning the robot was running very well.  We were picked by the number four alliance as their first pick and went into the elimination rounds. During the quarter finals our alliance scored the highest point total of the tournament which was over 200 points. Our two alliance partners were from Oregon.  In the finals, our robot lost communications due to a broken wire and the alliance lost the first game with our robot not being able to move. In the second and third games of the finals out robot was still not at full strength due to a pneumatics problem which could not be fixed on the field.  In spite of this, through a change in strategy and some great defense, our alliance came back and won both of those games to win the event.  Along with being the tournament winner we won an additional award, the Innovation in Controls award for our unique Frisbee pick up system.  It was a tiring weekend, but the time and preparation spent before the tournament allowed us to perform well and come out the victor.  The team will be playing again in Seattle this week and the entire school will be able to come out and see us in action!!  Go Skunks!!!”  Wow!  Super congratulations to the entire team, which includes everyone in the Skunkworks  family—students, parents and family members, mentors, sponsors, and Coaches Steele and Wilson!  We’re all looking forward to the action this weekend at the Seattle Regionals.

·         Our Speech & Debate Team that has competed all season, with some exemplary successes.  Coach Shiroma provides the following highlights of the January-March tournament season:  “At the Gonzaga University tournament, Katie McConville, Dylan Smith, Hanan Diriye, and Sierra Parsons were octafinalists in Public Forum Debate out of a huge pool of over 40 teams.  At Bellevue College, Zahnae Aquino received 2nd in humorous, Mimi Yousef was a finalist in SPAR, Katie McConville was 3rd in Extemporaneous, and Dylan Smith was 4th in Extemporaneous.  At the Federal Way tournament, Katie McConville, Benton Coblentz, and Zahnae Aquino received state tournament bids in speech and Katie and Dylan received an alternate position for Public Forum Debate.  At the UW Tacoma tournament, Karl Nielson, Senay Emmanuel, Dylan Smith, Shailee Stevens, Hanan Diriye, and Elizabeth van Flandern all received state bids in speech.  Also participating this year were Dean Haynes, Jimmy Nguyen, Joe Spallino, Joan Aoanan, Alex Vu, Phillip Ho, Kevin Diego, Deanta Kelly, Royce Le, Yasi Zhong, Rangsey Touch, Andrew Hoppe, Anthony Ayson, Brian Huynh, Monica Corcoro, Makoto Take, and Navath Nhan.  We have a very young team and there is great potential for success in coming years.  The team overall has made leaps and bounds in terms of experience, and everyone will be more prepared for next year’s season.”   Hearty congratulations to EVERYONE on our Speech & Debate Team! You are gaining a most credible reputation as we learned when interviewing prospective students this year.  Many want to be part of your team!  Huge gratitude to Mr. Shiroma for advising the team, too!  If you didn’t have a chance to catch all of our aspiring debaters and speechies (Mr. Shiroma’s word, not mine) in competition, you have one last chance this year at our 4th annual murder mystery dinner occurring on May 3rd.

·         Our multi-talented ASB for sponsoring the Spring Fling and dance last week!  Thanks, too, to parents and staff who chaperoned the dance.

·         All students who have been accepted for summer internships!  Read the Announcement section for specifics, along with additional postings.

That’s it for this week, Scholars!  I am looking forward to the Alaska Airlines Delivery Flight with many of you on Wednesday and the Robotics tournament at Century Link on Friday.  I am honored to be your principal.  May your week of learning be spectacular!

~Reba G.

Aviation Day 2013 June 1st
Registration begins March 13, 2013
Together with several business sponsors, Alaska Airlines is once again proud to host the Fifth Annual Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Sea-Tac Airport – Alaska Airlines Flight Operations Building.
This event is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the youth of Puget Sound communities. Aviation Day 2012 will provide the opportunity for high school-aged young adults to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Learning will be accomplished in both a classroom setting and with “hands-on” experiences.
The youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Boeing 737 with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a jet engine with employees who fix them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with those who operate there. Careers as far ranging as air traffic control to airline flight attendant will be discussed throughout the day. Participants will be able to explore just how flights are planned, scheduled and executed. Training facilities will be open for them and engineers will guide them through the construction of aircraft. Several light aircraft and pilots will also be on-site to educate and inspire tomorrow's leaders to take us into the skies of the future.
WARNING:  This event fills up HOURS after opening on March 13th for registration. There are ONLY 400 slots and high schoolers come from as far away as the Olympic peninsula and eastern Washington to participate. *A generic lunch is provided, no special requests.

Imagine Highline: Your Game-Changing Ideas for Our Schools (Message from the superintendent)

Have you seen Highline’s new online discussion forum website, Imagine Highline?  It’s an easy way for staff, students, families, and community members to give input on issues facing our schools.

On Imagine Highline, you can post ideas, comment on others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with fellow community members. It is a way to exchange ideas in a format that fits into our busy lives, knowing we don’t always have time or energy to attend public meetings. We will be talking about all kinds of topics over the coming months.

Our first conversation is about the new strategic plan that will guide our schools for the next three years. The core team of parents, teachers, principals, and district and community leaders building that plan are asking you to participate. They want your ideas and feedback so this will truly be the community’s plan for our schools.

The core team is looking for big ideas to drive a plan that will be a game-changer for Highline students. Imagine Highline is a place where you can share your boldest hopes for our children and our community. What experiences do you want students to have? What should our schools be like? What kind of community do you want to live in, and how can schools make our community all we want it to be?

Go to Imagine Highline and share your game-changing ideas!

Juniors: Sign up with Quest Bridge, an organization that helps students with whose families earn less than $60,000/year reach highly-selective colleges. Visit: http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/students-start-here.
