The Principal’s
Message
The
foremost edge of an airfoil, especially a wing or propeller blade, is defined
as the leading
edge. As a public high school, RAHS,
actively explores ways to lead the edge of educational innovation. The founding
principal and visionary, Ms. Reba Gilman,
rightly judged the context of aviation and aerospace as a viable approach to
spin innovation into reality. More
recently, in 2011, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
officially recognized RAHS as an Innovation
School.
Throughout our history, internal and external forces
have knowingly pushed innovation ahead. The RAHS storyline shines with our
award-winning teachers, devoted support staff, passionate students, consistent
leadership, platinum-level PTSA, project-based learning, sports-of-the-mind
team culture, and comprehensive career readiness program. Undeniably,
pulses of innovation at RAHS are traceable to our strategic partners: the founding Board of Directors, The Museum of
Flight, aviation/aerospace industry, capital campaign donors, and institutions
of higher education. To this day, our
partnerships spark innovation in the RAHS community.
Along the leading edge
of partnerships, I am excited to announce the next wave of innovation— a blended-learning
model, sponsored by Purdue University’s
Department of Aviation Technology, (AT). Last Spring, Dr. John Wensveen, Head of
Aviation Technology at Purdue University, and I began a conversation to link
our Aviation Careers course and Aerospace Engineering class with Purdue’s AT
Certificate Program. Our goal is to formalize
a MoU by November, and then launch two certificate programs, Careers in Aviation,
and Unmanned Aerial Systems Design and
Construction, later this school year.
On October 22 or 23, a Purdue
staff member will deliver a brief information session to students in the Aviation Careers and Aerospace Engineering classes. Any student in grades 9-11 with the slightest
interest in Purdue University should attend the presentation. If you are not currently enrolled in Aviation
Careers or Aerospace Engineering, but interested in this opportunity, please
sign-up for the session(s) with Ms.
Hiranaka. Remember to check the
NOTAM for further updates regarding the blended-learning model with Purdue.
My theme tied to leading the edge of innovation and partnerships closes
with a fitting gallery of images. Last
week, Mr. McComb and Mr. Joshi led their students to the frontier
of space exploration and innovation. Raisbeck Aviation High
School students met NASA + Boeing
experts at the Museum of Flight for
a panel discussion and tour on the Journey to Mars. Boeing is working with NASA to build the
Space Launch System that will propel humans into deep space. The 43 images capture RAHS students and staff
engaged with NASA + Boeing experts, and are accessible through this link-- https://flic.kr/s/aHskhqsWCa
