Principal’s Message

Congratulations to Junior, Austin Spores, who soloed on March 11!  He flew a Cessna 162 out of Renton Municipal Airport, successfully doing two touch and goes and a smooth landing.  When asked about the experience, his immediate response was, “Indescribable!”  Austin’s next step is to do solo cross country flights to log 40 hours prior to getting his private pilot’s license in September when he turns 17.  He is aiming to do his check ride on September 2, the magical 17th birthday.  Austin’s career goal is to become a commercial airline pilot after graduating from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of North Dakota, or Central WA University.  Best wishes, Austin!

And, super congratulations to our mighty Science Olympians who participated this past Saturday at the Highline Community College’s Science Olympiad Regional Competition!  The team was 56 members strong and highly spirited as they entered the competition after months of preparation to test their knowledge and skills. They represented our school in exemplary fashion and with outstanding sportsmanship. We are immensely proud of each and every one of our Olympians.
Some notable finishes in an extremely competitive field include:
·         Caitlin Schaefer and Andrea Wooley finished 2nd in Astronomy and 2nd in Remote Sensing
·         Jessica Mannard and Dustin Werran finished 2nd in Forensics and 1st in Thermodynamics.
·         Hiren Ajudia and Sophia Cassam finished 4th in Rocks & Minerals, and 5th in both Water Quality and Forestry, while Qing Roo Deng and Ramneet Kaur finished 4th in Water Quality and 3rd in Rocks & Minerals.
·         Mike Huynh and Gurinder Chhokar finished 1st in Write It / Do It and 3rd in Gravity Vehicle. Taite Stewart and Manuel Brambila-Diaz finished 2nd in Write It / Do It, 2nd in Boomilever, and 4th in Gravity Vehicle.
·         Josh Stueck and Andy Beal finished 3rd place in Mag Lev Vehicle.
·         Allen May and Kishan Vekaria finished 2nd place in both Robot Arm and Elastic Launch Glider. Micheal Torrey and Austin McHenry finished 3rd in both. Rocco Buty and Dalton Huey finished 4th.
The Science Olympiad Elite Team placed 5th overall (earning a berth to the state competition in April) and our Varsity Team placed 6th. We salute the accomplishments of our Olympians and wish them well as they prepare for State.

A big shout out goes to Coaches McComb and Dyer for their leadership and inspiration to the team; and huge thanks are extended to all of the parents, guardians and supporters who volunteered on Saturday: Mr. Rossman, Mr. Albertson, Mr. Hrehov, Mr. Vader, Mrs. Vader, Mrs. Weeks, Mr. Wooley, Ms. Sando, Mr. DeWeese, and Mr. Shiroma.

The spring season begins this week, and ASB has planned an exciting week to celebrate.  Read the Announcements section to see what you should be wearing each day of the week and to find details about the dance on Saturday evening.  And, have fun as we all await those sunny, warm days that are surely mean that spring really is just around the proverbial corner!

If you didn’t catch the Q13 TV news story that aired last week about our school, you can access it at.  http://q13fox.com/2013/03/12/aviation-high-school/#axzz2NN2DwpsP  The reporter did an excellent job of reporting about the characteristics that make us a Lighthouse Model of STEM Excellence, featuring many of our students demonstrating their learning along with Mr. McComb explaining the elements of project based learning. We also were visited by KOMO TV last Friday when 20 of our students provided feedback to Boeing curriculum/technology developers about a new flight app.  So far, the story hasn’t yet aired but it’s possible something will be shown this week.

Please read the Announcements, and be sure to note that permission forms are due very soon for our all-school field trip to the Robotics competition on March 29!  And, seniors and ACE Club members, we need your permission forms returned by this Friday for the Alaska Delivery Flight, which will be held on the afternoon of March 27.

That’s it for this week.  Good luck to our Skunks as they travel to Ellensburg this week. And again, a hearty congratulations to our Science Olympians for an outstanding showing at regional competition this past weekend.
My very best to all for an extraordinary week of learning.  I am deeply honored to be your principal!
~Reba G.

AHS Skunkworks Robotics Team Competition Schedule Announced:
After a very trying build season, the team is now ready for competition. Because of the schedule that we were given for competition the team had to sign up for events that are three weeks in a row this year. We will be competing in Ellensburg at Central Washington University on March 21-23, in Seattle at Quest March 28-30, and in Spokane April 4-6. The Skunks have a large team this year and in order to reduce some of the time away from class, the first year team members will be only attending 2 of the three events… Veteran team members will attend all three.
(In late April, the veteran team members will be also be attending the World Championships in St. Louis…April 24th through the 28th)
This is a very difficult game to play this year… the most complex we have ever had to design for and the students have worked very hard to accomplish a very tough assignment… Please wish them well in the competition. They deserve our praise and our support.

Thank you,
Coach Robert Steele
AHS Skunkworks Robotics

Aviation Day 2013 June 1st
Registration begins March 13, 2013
Together with several business sponsors, Alaska Airlines is once again proud to host the Fifth Annual Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Sea-Tac Airport – Alaska Airlines Flight Operations Building.
This event is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the youth of Puget Sound communities. Aviation Day 2012 will provide the opportunity for high school-aged young adults to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Learning will be accomplished in both a classroom setting and with “hands-on” experiences.
The youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Boeing 737 with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a jet engine with employees who fix them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with those who operate there. Careers as far ranging as air traffic control to airline flight attendant will be discussed throughout the day. Participants will be able to explore just how flights are planned, scheduled and executed. Training facilities will be open for them and engineers will guide them through the construction of aircraft. Several light aircraft and pilots will also be on-site to educate and inspire tomorrow's leaders to take us into the skies of the future.
WARNING:  This event fills up HOURS after opening on March 13th for registration. There are ONLY 400 slots and high schoolers come from as far away as the Olympic peninsula and eastern Washington to participate. *A generic lunch is provided, no special requests.

Imagine Highline: Your Game-Changing Ideas for Our Schools (Message from the superintendent)

Have you seen Highline’s new online discussion forum website, Imagine Highline?  It’s an easy way for staff, students, families, and community members to give input on issues facing our schools.

On Imagine Highline, you can post ideas, comment on others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with fellow community members. It is a way to exchange ideas in a format that fits into our busy lives, knowing we don’t always have time or energy to attend public meetings. We will be talking about all kinds of topics over the coming months.

Our first conversation is about the new strategic plan that will guide our schools for the next three years. The core team of parents, teachers, principals, and district and community leaders building that plan are asking you to participate. They want your ideas and feedback so this will truly be the community’s plan for our schools.

The core team is looking for big ideas to drive a plan that will be a game-changer for Highline students. Imagine Highline is a place where you can share your boldest hopes for our children and our community. What experiences do you want students to have? What should our schools be like? What kind of community do you want to live in, and how can schools make our community all we want it to be?

Go to Imagine Highline and share your game-changing ideas!

Juniors: Sign up with Quest Bridge, an organization that helps students with whose families earn less than $60,000/year reach highly-selective colleges. Visit: http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/students-start-here.
