Principal’s Message
After turning the clock one hour ahead on Saturday night, I realized there is so much to look forward to over the next month at AHS.  We are cheering our Skunks on—later this month they begin three regional competitions in order to qualify for nationals. Interestingly, this year’s Frisbee flinging robot has a connection to AHS’s aerodynamic sports team—Ultimate Frisbee.  Maybe our sports team connection will give the Skunks an extra advantage during competition.  Either way, the competition will be fun to watch!

This week we recognize our classified staff members who deserve rounds of raucous applause for their tireless service.  Collectively, they attend to hundreds of requests on a daily basis and by doing so keep the school’s support functions humming and facility ready for student learning.   Our classified employees—Ms. Hiranaka, Ms. Suiaunoa, Ms. Sorensen, Mr. Delano, Mr. Mullis, and Ms. Nakashima, are hereby recognized for their stellar contributions to make AHS a great place to work and learn!  Thank you team!

Our sophomore students are tackling the HSPE exams in reading and writing this week.  The entire AHS staff encourages them to get a good night’s rest and be ready each day to perform at their best.

Finally, looking ahead to next Monday, we kick off Spirit Week!  Each day presents a different opportunity to show your Phoenix spirit.  We look forward to seeing your individual creativity displayed each day.  Please remember that if you do not choose to participate in spirit day attire you are expected to be in regular school dress, which means no jeans.

It is an honor to compose this week’s message,

~ Assistant Principal, Bruce Kelly.

AHS featured on Q13 TV this week:
Aviation High School will be featured on Q13 television this week on Tuesday March 12. Their reporter contacted us as a result of reading about Lighthouse Models of STEM Excellence that were selected this year. She noticed that Aviation HS had been the first high school recipient in 2010 and wanted to do a story about what we have done since 2010 to enhance the practices of our school that qualified us for "lighthouse".  Examples of project based learning were filmed in Mr. Scott McComb’s 0 hour class, and students were interviewed about their internships in STEM workplaces and their thoughts about how AHS is helping them excel, Jake Hecla was interviewed specifically about his goals and dreams and early admission to MIT, and interviews were also conducted Mr. McComb and Ms. Gilman. We never know what will actually be featured, but hopefully our students are able see themselves on TV!
(This reporter does only the early morning shows, so most likely it will be aired at 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., but will also be available for viewing online later in the day.)

AHS Skunkworks Robotics Team Competition Schedule Announced:
After a very trying build season, the team is now ready for competition. Because of the schedule that we were given for competition the team had to sign up for events that are three weeks in a row this year. We will be competing in Ellensburg at Central Washington University on March 21-23, in Seattle at Quest March 28-30, and in Spokane April 4-6th. The Skunks have a large team this year and in order to reduce some of the time away from class, the first year team members will be only attending 2 of the three events… Veteran team members will attend all three.
(In late April, the veteran team members will be also be attending the World Championships in St. Louis…April 24th through the 28th)
This is a very difficult game to play this year… the most complex we have ever had to design for and the students have worked very hard to accomplish a very tough assignment… Please wish them well in the competition. They deserve our praise and our support.
Thank you,
Coach Robert Steele
AHS Skunkworks Robotics

Aviation Day 2013 June 1st
Registration begins March 13, 2013
Together with several business sponsors, Alaska Airlines is once again proud to host the Fifth Annual Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Sea-Tac Airport – Alaska Airlines Flight Operations Building.
This event is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the youth of Puget Sound communities. Aviation Day 2012 will provide the opportunity for high school-aged young adults to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Learning will be accomplished in both a classroom setting and with “hands-on” experiences.
The youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Boeing 737 with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a jet engine with employees who fix them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with those who operate there. Careers as far ranging as air traffic control to airline flight attendant will be discussed throughout the day. Participants will be able to explore just how flights are planned, scheduled and executed. Training facilities will be open for them and engineers will guide them through the construction of aircraft. Several light aircraft and pilots will also be on-site to educate and inspire tomorrow's leaders to take us into the skies of the future.
WARNING:  This event fills up HOURS after opening on March 13th for registration. There are ONLY 400 slots and high schoolers come from as far away as the Olympic peninsula and eastern Washington to participate. *A generic lunch is provided, no special requests.

Imagine Highline: Your Game-Changing Ideas for Our Schools (Message from the superintendent)

Have you seen Highline’s new online discussion forum website, Imagine Highline?  It’s an easy way for staff, students, families, and community members to give input on issues facing our schools.

On Imagine Highline, you can post ideas, comment on others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with fellow community members. It is a way to exchange ideas in a format that fits into our busy lives, knowing we don’t always have time or energy to attend public meetings. We will be talking about all kinds of topics over the coming months.

Our first conversation is about the new strategic plan that will guide our schools for the next three years. The core team of parents, teachers, principals, and district and community leaders building that plan are asking you to participate. They want your ideas and feedback so this will truly be the community’s plan for our schools.

The core team is looking for big ideas to drive a plan that will be a game-changer for Highline students. Imagine Highline is a place where you can share your boldest hopes for our children and our community. What experiences do you want students to have? What should our schools be like? What kind of community do you want to live in, and how can schools make our community all we want it to be?

Go to Imagine Highline and share your game-changing ideas!

Juniors: Sign up with Quest Bridge, an organization that helps students with whose families earn less than $60,000/year reach highly-selective colleges. Visit: http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/students-start-here.

THANKS for helping give students the nudge to apply on time!
