Special Education Teacher, Ms. Soong-Yaplee will be at RAHS Monday through Thursday, 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM and Friday 12:30 Pm until 2:00 PM.  Her telephone number is:  206-631-7225.
Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area.  Please do not make U-turns here, but turn around at the west end of the building.  Our student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school.  Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.

Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk.  If a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot.  Thank you parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.

Our Success Dean, Mr. Nick Anderson provides services for students.  He will be tutoring freshmen on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM and sophomores, juniors and seniors on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM.  The sessions will be held in Mr. Hoehne’s classroom, 3510.

Health room
Students, if you have a fever, persistent cough, or the flu, please stay home and rest.  Lately, a growing number of students have asked to use the health room to take a nap.  The health room is designed to support students with legitimate health-related needs—students who are ill remain the health room’s top priority.  Once a student is checked into the health room, a decision is made after 15 minutes to determine if the student should be sent home or return to class.  The parents are called if a student has a fever, or the student shares that they are not feeling well enough to return to class.  Thank you for your cooperation and for modeling good public health practices.

The Royal Aeronautical Society was formed in 1866 by the 8th Duke of Argyll and a group of “aerial navigation enthusiasts”.  This unique group set about prompting heavier-than-air flight 37 years before the Wright brothers made their first successful, powered flight.
The Seattle branch was formed in 1999 and has a steadily growing membership and a strong lecture program culminating in the annual November Black-Tie Dinner Lecture which is named in honor of Joe Sutter, the renowned “Father of the 747”.  The Seattle affiliate enjoys a close relationship with the Museum of Flight where lectures and events generally take place.  RAHS has maintained a close bond with RAeS over the past ten years through both mentorships and internships.

MENTORS/MENTEES -- We have just one week left of 2015.  Make your appointments now to meet for December with your mentor/mentees.  Mentor rooms on the first floor of RAHS are reserved before school, at lunch and after school for your respective meetings.  Email or text your mentor/mentees today.  Questions?  steven.davolt@highlineschools.org

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS -- Following the December holidays, RAHS will begin posting internship opportunities for summer 2016.  Internships will be posted in the CAREER CENTER and in the weekly NOTAM.  Depending on the particulars, positions will be posted 2-3 weeks prior to deadlines for applications.  All applications will be read and reviewed.  Finalists will be selected for in-person interviews depending of the needs and requirements of the particular internship.  Interviews will be conducted at RAHS during the afternoon periods and immediately after school.  Final awardees will be announced the week following conducted interviews.  For planning purposes, roughly 60% of internships are paid positions with the remainder being unpaid.  All internships are eligible for RAHS credit.  Credit is awarded following submission of all appropriate paperwork to the RAHS CAREER CENTER.  For questions and further details ---contact Mr. Davolt in the CAREER CENTER or email steven.davolt@highlineschools.org.

2016 INTERNSHIP HOSTS -- If there is an opportunity to host a RAHS student intern at your organization or company for this coming summer -- -be sure and check in with Mr. Davolt at steven.davolt@highlineschools.org.  Internships may be both “paid” and “unpaid” depending on circumstances.  We appreciate the support of our parents and professional colleagues.

The Principal’s Message
Many thanks to our student representatives, Amber Thatcher, Bailey Fuentes, Josh Sherbrooke, Kalika Singh, and Noah Voges, who attended the Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association (PNBAA) annual holiday meeting last week.  Bailey and Noah represented RAHS at the PNBAA charity golf tournament last September.

With an eye on the future of business aviation, PNBAA awarded RAHS $8,000 for scholarships at their annual meeting.  Since 2009, PNBAA has donated more than $50,000 to the school, raising the funds at the annual charity golf tournament.  The chief sponsor for this year’s scholarship is John Rudd.

Established as a single voice for business aviation operators in the region, PNBAA focuses on issues important to its members as well as the community, said PNBAA’s Scott Jefvert. “Raisbeck Aviation High School’s principles and goals are in line with our aspirations to support future men and women who desire to join the business aviation community.”

The announcement was featured on the National Business Aviation Association’s website—

Graduating seniors who plan to continue their education in pursuit of a career in business aviation are eligible for the scholarship. The application includes an essay “that shows their interest in this field and how their chosen educational path will contribute to the growth and viability of business aviation in the future.” RAHS staff selects the top 10 applicants, and the PNBAA board selects the two recipients. Seniors, please look for the PNBAA award in the Scholarship Packet that is available in March 2016.

Several PTSA parents and students have expressed concerns about the new RAHS application process.  The PTSA co-president, Steve Burke, recently spoke with Highline Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield regarding this topic. She has agreed to ask a delegation including School Board President Bernie Dorsey, the district Chief Communications Officer, Catherine Carbone Rogers, the CEO of the Museum of Flight, Doug King, the Vice President of Education and former RAHS principal, Reba Gilman, and current principal Bruce Kelly to attend the PTSA general meeting on Monday, December 14th to address the topic of the new RAHS application process. Susan Enfield would like to be there but will be out of town that day. They will specifically address the following questions:

·         How was the decision made to change the RAHS application process, what steps were taken, what comparisons to other schools/models were made, what data was collected and were there any public meetings held regarding it?
  • Do you have any data to show how the lottery will affect diversity?
  • Can you provide real clarity on the criteria of what constitutes a completed application?
  • Can you clarify that the application essay question might be and how that response will be considered?
  • How will the rigor of RAHS be stressed through the application process to encourage self-selection?
  • What is the value and validity of the in person interview after the lottery has been held?
  • Where will the applications be sent and to what extent will the school staff be involved in processing them?
  • How will the quality of the school, staff, and students be measured and managed after implementation of the new process?
  • Why is access to RAHS through a lottery being managed differently than access to an IB program which is by academic achievement?
  • Could the process of the change to the new system be phased over a couple of years to evaluate its success rather than suddenly with a late announcement?
The general agenda will be: the auction team presents the auction results at 6:00 pm, followed by the PTSA business agenda including the vote for the standing rules. At 7:00 pm we will introduce the district leadership team for a discussion on the application process.  Students, parents and alumni, and industry partners are welcome to attend the event.

I wish everyone an extraordinary week of learning, and best of luck to our VEX robotics and Speech and Debate Teams.

The Principal’s Round of Applause acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.
