Principal’s Message
Last
week, we hosted Cascade Middle School for a visit. Thank you to EVERYONE who
participated! Reports from Cascade students and staff were most positive, and
it was obvious that there was a lot of interest in our school. This Wednesday,
we host Chinook Middle School from
9:30-11:30 a.m. We will adhere to our regular Wednesday block schedule to
accommodate a group of approximately 40 students. We are calling on former
Chinook students and a few others to participate in the program.
As
I was sorting through my mail last week (and tossing a lot of it in the waste
basket), I was thrilled to open a letter from the Vice President for Academic
Affairs & Provost of one of Washington State’s premier universities and
read that Ms. Wombold was recently
named as a recipient of the 2013 Teacher
Excellence Award. She was nominated by a former AHS student whose comments
in her nomination included, “Ms. Wombold fulfills all the duties of an
excellent teacher: compassionate, inspiring, worldly, curious, progressive,
life changing. Through her energetic spirit and ability to make even the dullest
of subjects interesting, her students find themselves never wanting to leave
the classroom. She is accepting of all cultures and people…and while she does
not advertise herself to be the best teacher at RAHS or seek recognition, she
sure does deserve it!” Congratulations,
Ms. Wombold, and gold stars! Well
deserved.
As
we wrap up this week and each head out for a two-week break, I wish you a
joyful holiday with family and friends. Please know that I am inspired by each
of you and appreciate the special gifts you bring to our learning community.

to all that donated to “Free the Children Shave it or Save it!” We raised
$225.13, so that means Mr. Joshi and Mr. Gudor have to complete their dares. Be
on the lookout for their new styles!

Here's
another chance to help out the “Free the Children” and our fundraiser in India.
With the holiday season coming up, show your friends appreciation by buying
them an ice cream sundae, or even buy one for yourself. ASB will be selling ice
cream tickets in the mornings and during lunch on Monday the 16th to Wednesday
the 18th. Then, redeem your ticket for your ice cream on Thursday and Friday.

Speech and Debate
Why wrap your own holiday
gifts when you can have someone wrap them for you! The Speech and Debate team will be providing
gift wrapping services on 12/21 from 2:00-10:00 p.m. and 12/23 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00
p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in South Center.
All proceeds will benefit our award winning Speech and Debate team!
Robotics
The
RAHS Skunk Works Robotics team will soon be entering our build season for the
2014 competitions. We will find out what game we have to play on January
4th when we attend the kickoff in Auburn. After that time our
scheduled meeting times will increase to Monday through Thursday each week from
6:00 PM until 9:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:30 until 3:30 PM. The
team will be competing at two District competitions this year in Cheney, WA on
March 14-15 and at Auburn High School on March 28-29. Hopefully we will
qualify and play at the District Championships in Portland on April
10-12. This year the World Championships will be April 24th
-26th in St. Louis and we hope to represent the school again for our
9th straight year. Go SKUNKS!
Science Olympiad:
Science
Olympians,
a friendly reminder that studiers are required to come to Science Olympiad on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while builders are required to come on
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Start
saving the dates for our Mandatory Marathon Saturdays where you get to
practice, work, and compete against your Olympian peers!

Chess Club
All
students interested in learning or playing chess are invited to join us on
Friday’s from 12:40-1:10 in Ms. Week’s classroom. Beginners and experts welcome!
Math Club:
This week will be focusing on finding
shortcut for the Math Competition.
Don't want to take the test but want
to learn how to play chess? We will teach you at no charge on Wednesday from
3:45 to 4:45pm at Mr. Gudor’s classroom.

National Honor Society
In
order to get everyone into the Christmas spirit, the National Honor Society
will be holding a picture with Santa event. This year Santa will be played by
the irresistible and cuddly Athan Mastor. Pictures will be free and the event
will held during lunch outside of the cafeteria. Come join us and get
your free picture with Santa!
Phoenix Flyer:
"It’s
that time again, which means we are getting ready for this year’s winter break!
The Phoenix Flyer is bringing back an old tradition for the holidays: the
winter double-dog-dare contest!! There is one suggested dare for each day
off, and the person to complete the most dares wins a pizza party for
themselves and their closest buddies, courtesy of the RAHS Phoenix Flyer.

1. Juniors and
Seniors with a passion for space and who enjoy and have experience with hands
on building projects- apply for a full time, paid summer internship with Blue
Origin. Deadline January 6, 2014 to Julie Burr.
2. Any age, apply
for one of only a couple positions with the Museum Apprentice Program at the
Museum of Flight, deadline 12/19/13 to Ms. Burr.
3. All students
who have asked for a MENTOR should now be matched, let Ms. Burr or Ms. Wooley
know if you are looking for a mentor. Program is for Sophomores – Seniors, but
some mature Freshmen will be considered.
4. Exciting
news! SeaTec Systems Engineering
and Consulting has just hired 3 RAHS students for an internship to network and
test an in-flight entertainment systems for transport aircraft. Kory Watson, Elijah Harmon and Westin
Miller will be working fast and furiously from now until end of January to
meet deadlines.

starts at RAHS may end up in a select show at the US Department of Education.
Bonus: We'll take care of the packaging for you.
LAPTOPS - Please be
sure to read the special notice sent out last week about Laptop Insurance. If
you have any questions regarding insurance for laptops, feel free to contact
Bruce Kelly at the school or PTSA president Steve Burke at president@aviationptsa.org . There
are a limited number of scholarships available for students who would like the
laptop insurance but who do not have the financial ability to pay for it. If
you would like to see if you qualify, please contact the school counselor Katie
Carper.

please remember that our late start to the school year means that we must make up the three days we missed at the
start of the school year. We have
made up one. Please plan to come to school on the following two days:

Attention
Seniors: Please don’t
wait until the last minute to schedule your senior picture appointment. Senior pictures are due on Friday, January
10, 2014 to yearbook. Look for the flyer in advisory this week that lists
the specific requirements.
Community
Service Forms: Please
be sure to fill out your community services forms in full before turning them
in to the career center. They cannot be
approved if they are missing student information, parent and/or advisor
signatures. Blank community service
forms will be available in the Career Center.

Need a Transcript?:
Seniors: All students who request transcripts for
college applications must pick up the transcript request forms from the
Registrar’s office and allow 2-3 days for processing. When picking up your transcript, please do so before or after school or at lunch—thank
you! If you are requesting an
unofficial transcript, please remember to pick them up from the Registrar’s
office, but not during instructional time. Your cooperation is needed and
appreciated!
eScrip: As you may
have previously heard, with eScrip, your grocery and retail purchases earn
money for RAHS. Now you can also earn money for our school when you dine
at local restaurants. Other merchants in our area providing
support include Safeway and Bartell Drugs. You may also register
your credit cards and your purchases will earn even more cash for RAHS. If
you have previously enrolled in eScript, please log in and do the annual
