With a smile, I receive
several interesting phone calls every week.
If there is a special award for the-phone-call-of-the week, Mr. Christian
Becker deserves the nomination. Mr.
Becker, who initially contacted me by phone, is a career pilot, and had never
visited RAHS until last Friday. He has
owned the WA state vanity license plate "PILOT" for almost 20 years,
and decided it's time to pass the plate on to another aspiring pilot. He
considered giving it to one of his friends, selling it on Craigslist, or
organizing a raffle at the NW Aviation Trade Show. Then, he thought of us. Mr. Becker decided to pay it forward, and will
transfer ownership of the plate to an RAHS student graduating in 2015. If you
are interested in becoming the next owner of this WA state vanity plate, please
review the criteria, and submit your application by the May 15 deadline.
Criteria:
·
Must be a senior in the class of 2015.
·
Avocation as a pilot—either as an intended
career, or you live by the motto, “I work so I can fly.”
·
Own a vehicle, or will acquire a vehicle by
August 30, 2015.
Application:
Submit
a one-minute video—the maximum length is one minute and 15 seconds, and answer
this prompt: Why I am best suited to own
the “PILOT” vanity plate? The video entry
is due by 4:00PM on Friday, May 15. Following our return from Spring Break,
instructions on where and how to submit the video will be published in the
NOTAM.
Mr.
Becker will present the license plate at the Senior Awards Ceremony, now re-scheduled for Monday June 8th. (Please
note the new date for our Senior Awards Ceremony.) He will pay for the transfer of the plate, and
the license tab fee for the first year. He
prefers the vanity plate to always remain registered to an RAHS graduate. So, 25-35 years henceforth, when the time
comes to pay it forward, the selected senior from the class of 2015 will return
to RAHS, and transfer the “PILOT” vanity plate to a senior—maybe from the class
of 2050! That moment will be worth another smile.
I would prefer to continue writing about wonderful news, but the tragedy
surrounding Germanwings Flight 9525, struck deep. All 150 individuals aboard the aircraft were
killed when the copilot deliberately crashed the plane into the French
Alps. The passengers included 16
students and two staff members from Joseph-Koenig Gymnasium, a German high
school in the town of Waltern.
Joseph-Koenig Gymnasium is the only high school in Waltern, and is
considered a relatively large school with a population of 1360 students. Several times throughout the week, I thought
about the impact on their school community, and my eyes welled-up with tears.
On behalf our school community, I emailed Joseph-Koenig
Gymnasium’s Principal, Ulrich Wessel, and his staff, and
offered our condolences. My message
included the German translation and English text. From the Joseph-Koenig
Gymnasium’s website, the names of the students and the staff aboard Germanwings flight
are published, and I have copied it as a way to acknowledge the students,
staff, families, and community of Waltern.
The
Germanwings air tragedy is another reminder about many things. Let’s remember to make today matter… through
our deliberate and purposeful lives, we can honor the school community at Joseph-Koenig Gymnasium.
The final, but uplifting news comes from The Museum of Flight. The
MoF Board agreed to name the covered air park, the Aviation Pavilion. The Aviation Pavilion represents an exciting
expansion of the Museum, and the south side of RAHS has the best view on the
project. Beginning April 6, a work crew will
install perimeter fencing around the construction site. Approximately 35 student parking spaces will
be impacted by the fencing. To account
for the parking, additional spaces will be available across the street or at
the Museum. The city of Tukwila plans to
activate the crosswalk signal by the time we return from Spring Break. Students, plan accordingly, and if you park
across the street, remember to use the Sky Bridge or designated crosswalk when
arriving to or leaving from school.
Scholars, you’ve made it to the end of the third
quarter, and all of you have earned a well-deserved Spring Break! Please enjoy your time with family and
friends, rest well, have fun, be safe, and come back excited to finish the
year.
The
Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a
better place.
Mr. McLaughlin and
Nghi Lam—for the wildly successful and simultaneous
Skype interview for four prospective students from Denmark, England, and two
students in Hawaii.
Alyda Sorm, Owen
Mattson, Jess Maynard, and Will Mueser—for serving on
the final interview team via Skype.
Abby Eades—for
faithfully sending team Turbulence updates.
ASB Leadership Team—for
sponsoring the Cultural Day Assembly.
Math Department—Dr. Edgerton, Mr. Gudor, Mr. Joshi, Ms.
Wilson, and Ms. Weeks—for screening the class of 2019 applications.
Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

NEW
ANNOUNCEMENTS
COPY/PRINT
STATIONS – Reminder from the Student Handbook:
RAHS students
begin with a $10 credit applied to their account paid through the technology fee.
The student incurs the cost of each click charge— $.00949 for black and white
copies and $.049 for color documents, and the paper cost, $.01 per sheet. For
example, a $10 credit allows a student to print or copy 75 color documents and
285 black and white copies. There are many combinations of black and white and
color printing to spend down the $10 credit.
Once a student’s
balance falls below $.02, their print/copy account, they are expected to pay an
additional $10
fee. There are no refunds for unused balances. Excess use—more than one additional
$10 charge, disables the student’s print/copy account for the remainder of the
school year. Prudent use of the print/copy station machines is expected. In the
event of a broken or jammed machine, students should notify a staff member
immediately.
Skunkworks Robotics
The
Skunk Works Robotics competed at the Philomath, OR District Event over the
weekend. Team 1983's robot was seeded 1st nearly the entire competition, with
team 955, Crescent Valley Robotics, following closely behind. Our alliance
consisted of team 955 and the home team, 847 PHRED (Philomath High Robotics
Engineering Division). The red alliance was undefeated in the final matches
with another success for Skunk Works and their alliance partners! After hard
work and competing and three events so far this season, we also received the
prestigious Chairman's Award, and
the Safety Award sponsored by
Underwater Laboratories. Skunk Works is
excited to attend the PNW FIRST District Championship in Cheney this next week,
Apr. 1 - Apr. 4, and work to qualify for a position in St. Louis, where 600 FRC
teams will be competing this year. Thank you to the parents, mentors, and
alliance teams for making this event possible and enjoyable!
