Principal’s Message:
Attending the Winter Wonderland talent show, hosted by Culture Club, was a great way to end last week and start the weekend. Kudos to Advisor Ms. Wombold, President Olivia Ochnik, and the entire Culture Club team for providing such a magnificent program that kept the audience well entertained from start to finish. It was so refreshing to observe the range of talent in our students, from vocal and instrumental solos, dancing, juggling, a Shaolin-style stick performance to a lip sync by the ASB! Kris Hartelius and Merritt Opdyke served as MC’s, and they were just as entertaining as the performers, with their quick wit and self-deprecating humor. Judges Gudor, Carper, Ciccone-Cook, and Dyer had a tough job in determining the finalists from such an astonishing group of performers, but in the end they selected Sasha Friedrich (vocal solo), Chandler Neames (juggling), Deanta Kelly (violin solo), Ramneet Kaur (Bhangra dance), Jade Jordan (hip hop dance), and Nic Bader (guitar/instrumental mix) for the awards. Congratulations to all! And, high fives to all the other performers, too, for their courage to participate as well as their outstanding talent: Kyra Sutherland, Maryam Shafa, Mary Robins, Andrew Hoppe, Surbhi Ghadia, Peyton Gural, Dean Haynes, Sureetha McCain, and ASB members. You were all magnificent!
We have an exciting assembly planned for Friday and are hoping that many of our sixth period classes will be in attendance. Featured speaker is Dale Klapmeier, founder and CEO of Cirrus Aircraft. Dale will tell the story of how he and his brother developed Cirrus when they were only a few years older than you. It’s quite an amazing story—from designing and building a kit airplane to manufacturing and selling world-wide a magnificent aircraft, complete with parachute. Whether you plan to be a pilot, engineer, scientist, journalist, innovator, or entrepreneur (or otherwise), I think you will find the Cirrus story fascinating and inspiring. FYI that you must be accompanied by a teacher to attend, so check with your sixth period teacher to see if he/she plans to attend and bring the class.
Our Science Olympians are hosting an invitational this Saturday, so I close this week’s message with wishing them the very best and looking forward to reporting their successes in next week’s NOTAM. As always, I am honored to be your principal and wish you an outstanding week of learning.

- Multicultural Assembly: Next week, the ASB will be hosting our very first Multicultural Assembly on Wednesday, February 6th in the gym. Students will be able to demonstrate many of the wonderful aspects of their cultures in a safe, fun, and exciting celebration. This year’s assembly will include a cultural fashion show, cultural dances/other performances, and a guest speaker. With this assembly, the ASB is hoping to build cultural awareness, promote tolerance, and continue to build school spirit. Students from all grade levels are encouraged to participate in this event. If you are interested in being a part of the fashion show (wearing cultural attire) or performing, please come see us! We hope that many of you can be a part of this spectacular event and make it a memorable one! ` Many have of you have asked for the application to apply for National Honor Society throughout the past few months. Now is your chance to apply. Applications will be released January 28 and will be due by February 4 at 3:30PM. You can access the application by emailing NHS President Sureetha McCain at sem_ahs@hotmail.com and she will attach the application in a reply to you. Good luck and we hope you all will consider joining a club that helps to make a difference in your school and community's life!
Starting January 28, 2013 your National Honor Society is hosting a toy drive competition. The toys will be donated to children at Seattle Children's Hospital, which is hosting a charity event for the sick children. Please donate any number of toys and bring them to the cafeteria.
There are some VERY IMPORTANT rules (set by Seattle Children's Hospital for the toy drive):
o Only NEW toys
o New toys must be unwrapped
o All new toys must NOT have any connection to violence
It is essential that these rules are followed due to the safety, health, and well-being of the patients.
The winning class will receive 100 spirit points and a root beer float party.
But the competition ends on February 22, 2013, so hurry and bring in you NEW TOYS.

Attention Students, Families, and Staff of Aviation High School Aviation High School
Take Action Project:
The Take Action Project is a prerequisite for the highest award in Girl Scouting. Girl Scout Troop members Chandler Neames and Maddie Fletcher solicited donations from their family and friends as part of a the Take Action Project. The members had to identify a need for women, which they concluded was jobs. They then focused their ideas to "How can you get a job if you don't look and feel your best at an interview?" Then they utilized social media and their network of friends, family and community to solicit donations. The three girls collected over six large bags of “underwear” for the Take Action Project. Thank you, AHS’ers who supported this project!

Culture Club is holding its monthly Culture Day on January 31 in Ms. Wombold's room from 3:30 to 4:45. This month we will be celebrating Asian Cultures! Join us in our celebration of a wide variety of traditions, foods, and games. All students and staff are invited to attend and bring any foods you would like to our potluck. Bank of America Student Leaders Program for Juniors and Seniors - recognizes students who step outside of the classroom to lead and serve in their own communities and beyond. Application deadline is January 25, 2013.
As a Student Leader, you will:
• Work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit for eight weeks
• Attend the weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC
• Develop leadership and career skills
• Connect with community-minded students from your own community and across the country
- Microsoft has announced their summer high school internship, which is full time, paid and VERY COMPETITIVE. They are also offering a 3 day boot camp, another great opportunity for those interested in computer science and software engineering. More information is on the Career Bulletin Board and website. Please let Mrs. Burr know if you plan to apply, she has some tips and requirements- we’d really like to see an AHS student selected for one of the twenty positions offered for students throughout the region.
- The Royal Aeronautical Society is offering a voluntary internship for a sophomore or junior, beginning in mid-February. The new intern will work with an experienced “lead intern” from AHS to assist with and attend 5-7 board meetings, lectures and the Joe Sutter Dinner offered by RAeS, beginning this February and extending over the course of the next year. - GREAT OPPORTUNITY! Full time, paid internship for juniors who want to go into engineering with BLR Performance Innovation in Everett. Don’t miss out. Application deadline is March 1, 2013. See Mrs. Burr or the Career Bulletin Board or website for more information.
· Sophomores and Juniors interested in Business Aviation, there are two part time, voluntary internships available immediately with the Pacific NW Business Aviation Association- a network of aviation business professionals. You’ll meet dozens of professionals while assisting with their events, website and other activities of the group. More info on the Career bulletin board/website or Ms. Burr. Deadline January 31, 2013.
· Internship: Center for Sensorimotor-Neural Engineering: This internship is perfect for students interested in scientific research. The internship is a 10-week full time experience for students of any grade level, beginning June 24, 2013 and running through August 30, 2013. You will receive a $5,000 stipend. See Mrs. Burr for more details. The deadline is February 1, 2013.
· Summer Internship Opportunity Planetary Resources, Inc. (PRI), The Asteroid Mining Company, is seeking qualified and enthusiastic high school students for paid internship positions to assist in the development of new technologies for commercial robotic space exploration and the development of space resources.
Interested applicants must apply through Aviation High School’s Internship Program and not directly to PLI. Submit a cover letter expressing your interest and career goals, a transcript, resume and the name of an AHS teacher who would serve as your reference to Julie Burr by Monday, February 4, 2013.
· GIRLS ROCK MATH Internships: Multiple positions for AHS female students in any grade to work in fun camps in West Seattle. Camps inspire young girls to pursue math and science and are offered in July. Pick up an application from Ms. Burr. The deadline is February 27, 2013.
· New Internship Opportunity with AcuWings:
Two volunteer part time internships for students who want to become pilots or work in aviation business with AcuWings, a charter company at Renton Municipal Airport. No age requirement, can start now with more hours in the summer. Must provide your own transportation and be reliable. Application deadline is January 31, 2013.
· Juniors pursuing engineering- what a dream to intern for RAISBECK Engineering this summer! 30 hours/week, paid internship, south Seattle location, application deadline March 1, 2013.
· AEROTEC Engineering will be offering 1-2 paid, full time engineering internships next summer. Aerotec is located in South Seattle and while targeting Seniors, they will also consider Juniors who will be pursuing an engineering degree, are top students and passionate about the field. Deadline for application is March 15, 2013.
· Future pilots and aviation business professionals- 2 part time, volunteer positions are now open with Clay Lacy Aviation- one of the world’s premier aircraft charter and management companies. Sophomores and juniors may apply; application deadline is March 15, 2013.
The Museum of Flight is hosting Women Fly!, an event for young women in high school who may be interested in an aviation and aerospace career. This year’s theme is “50 Years of Women in Space.” Participants will attend hands-on workshops, a networking lunch, and get to listen to aviation/aerospace women professionals. See Ms. Burr if interested.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations-- There is perhaps no greater challenge facing our country than increasing understanding and cooperation among people of different racial backgrounds. It is a challenge that every new generation encounters. We therefore believe that young people have a particularly important role to play, and hope, through the Princeton Prize, to recognize and encourage young people who have made or are making efforts to improve racial harmony. Application deadline is January 31, 2013.
The Princeton Prize in Race Relations consists of regionally awarded $1,000 cash awards as well as an annual symposium on race.
The NW Aviation Conference & Trade Show will be held February 23 & 24 at the Puyallup Fair Grounds. Aviation High School has “manned” a display table each year since 2004, with our Wingman Extraordinaire Tamera Nason organizing student participation. Boeing Job Shadow: On March 28, 2013, 60 Aviation High School Students will get to tour the Boeing Company’s Auburn Plant, learn about the wide variety of career opportunities there are with Boeing, and participate in fun workshops. All students are invited to participate except those on the Robotics Team. We’ll be leaving AHS by bus at 7:00 am and returning around 2:15 pm. First come, first served, so sign up in the Career Center and turn your field trip permission form in to Ms. Burr.

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.
· New WA state law for coding student absences: Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is a change from previous practice. We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.
· REMINDER for Families Scheduling Summer Vacations--Be prepared for your AHS student to attend school on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The first two days of school prepare your student for a great start to a new school year!
· Student Athletes— please remember to check in weekly with your advisor and notify them of your participation status. All winter athletes who did not participate in a fall sport must pick up their ALE paperwork this week from Mr. Kelly.

It's 2013 and June will be here before you know it....have you purchased your Grad Party Ticket yet?
If not, now is a great time to do so! For $125, your Senior will enjoy a terrific post-graduation party at iFly, celebrating with their Graduating Class one final time. Please fill out and return the ticket form with funds to Aviation High to ensure your senior a spot! The Grad Party Committee will sell tickets during lunch on Thursday’s beginning February 7. If you can help by taking a day to sell, please let us know by emailing Grad Party Chair Mindy McClean at mindymacster@hotmail.com. Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology. The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering. In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers. During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty. They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer. Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities. Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from UW admissions counselors.

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship helps low- and middle-income Washington State residents earn bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and health care. Association of Computer Professionals in Education (ACPE) Scholarships these scholarships are available to graduation high school seniors who have been actively involved in the use of technology during their high school careers and are planning to pursue studies in a technology related field. Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to four deserving students in Washington and Oregon. Application deadline is March 1, 2013.
