Principal’s Message

The final NOTAM for 2014 arrives with a dollop of wonderful news.  Last week, the executive board for the Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association, PNBAA, publicly announced a generous contribution to RAHS.  We received a check for $10,000 designated for student scholarships!  I am indebted to and grateful for the industry’s continuous support for RAHS students.  Students, the scholarship awards offer a significant savings on your college-related expenses.

Seniors, remember to review and apply for the awards described in the scholarship packet—it becomes available next spring. Our industry and community partners’ generosity is inspired by your hard work on display every day. Thank you for modeling true professionalism in and out of the classroom—the generous scholarship awards are one way to see how your hard work is rewarded.

As a community, it’s been full throttle since the beginning of the school year. Whew.  Next week is the beginning of a well-deserved vacation.  Our extended vacation inside the school year allow us to push the recharge buttons for our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual selves.  Take full advantage of a season that sparkles with profound messages of faith, hope, and love.  I encourage you to count all of your blessings and create happiness for others.  Rejoice, reflect, and remember. Travel safely and Happy Holidays!

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Abigail Gilbaugh and Joe Merlino—served as exceptional RAHS ambassadors at the King County Airport Roundtable meeting last Monday.

John Copeland, Senay Emmanuel, Sophia Gut, Evan Hobbs, and Sameer Romani —who spoke with poise and professionalism on behalf of RAHS at the PNBAA annual membership meeting.

Dr. Edgerton—superb representation for the Civil Air Patrol at the PNBAA annual meeting.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Senior Project
Seniors, the list of names for those students eligible for the Internship Option for the Senior Project will be posted outside the career center by Friday of this week.

PTSA Auction Result
This year's dinner and auction was a glowing success.  We raised over $143,500!  Thanks to everyone for all of your support!  It's never too early to start donating, procuring, volunteering and signing up to be a sponsor.   We will start planning for the 2015 auction in January.  We have plenty of room for more businesses to be involved, so talk with your employers and favorite businesses, and remind them that 100% of the net proceeds of their sponsor dollars (no matter how large or small) goes towards RAHS.

The 2015 sponsor opportunities will be announced in late January.  Also - We are looking for a few new auction committee members.  If you have prior auction experience, please consider helping.  Email ahsauction@aviationptsa.org<mailto:ahsauction@aviationptsa.org> if you are interested.  Raising money for our teachers and students is a fun and extremely gratifying way to spend your spare time.  Cheers to another year of supporting our students!

Principal’s Message

The season and spirit of giving and receiving are fully alive with RAHS.  Last Monday, I received a phone call from Ken Hastings, lead of Corporate Development (M&A and Strategic Planning) and Investor Relations for the PACCAR Foundation. Ken explained the PACCAR foundation approved a grant for RAHS in the amount of $146,000 to purchase a Fortus 400mc 3D printer. “The Fortus 400mc is a user-configurable high-performance workhorse, ideal for creating functional prototypes, manufacturing tools and end-use parts to match any mechanical, thermal, aesthetic and resolution needs.”  This new technology enhances our Project Based Learning environment and furthers our mission to inspire and prepare students to follow a STEM education and career pathway. I am thrilled for our community!  The PACCAR Foundation’s generous contribution is a rocket-assisted boost to help us maintain our orbit as a statewide leader in STEM education.

A few weeks ago, several families brought their concerns to me about the decision to maintain the senior project as a graduation requirement.  I appreciated their sincerity and list of constructive alternatives to satisfy the requirement.  Sensibly, our STEM culture and partnerships with the aviation and aerospace industry offer just such an option— as suggested by the parent group.  For clarity, an alternative route is officially identified and approved and will be known as the Internship Option. The Internship Option becomes effective immediately and our Career Readiness Center is working to verify the names of eligible students.  By December 19, students will be notified in writing if they have met or are on track to meet the first four of the following Internship Option requirements:

The student:

  •  Applied for an internship through the RAHS Career Readiness Center (proposal requirement satisfied)
  • Secured an internship advertised through the RAHS Career Readiness Center (mentor contact satisfied through an internship supervisor)
  •   Satisfactorily completed at least 30 hours of internship experience (hours requirement met)
  •  Completed the internship between May 1, 2014 and April 1, 2015 (senior year requirement)
In addition to the verification provided by the Career Readiness Center, the student will:

  • Write a description of at least one project that was completed during the internship.  The description must include the number of hours spent on the project and what was accomplished (written documentation satisfied)
  • Compose a reflection on what was learned both personally and about the industry sponsoring the internship experience (written documentation satisfied)
  • Prepare a presentation, similar to the senior project presentation, to summarize the experience (presentation component satisfied)

For any student who did not secure an internship through the RAHS Career Readiness Center, they are expected to move forward with their original senior project proposal. All students will present their projects or the internship experience as scheduled on April 15 or 16, 2015.  In previous years, projects displaying exceptionally high quality work were nominated for the Senior Showcase.  These students became eligible for the PTSA scholarship money—that practice continues. However, students who complete the senior project requirement via the Internship Option are not eligible for PTSA scholarship money.

Thank you for your suggestions, support, and patience throughout the process.  The Senior Project advisors will clarify students’ questions during this week’s advisory periods.

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Irene Balbuena, Edith Dizon, Van Tran, and Shirley Buenbrazo—amazing volunteers who brought the delicious meal to feed the entire staff on Information Night. Thank you for taking great care of us!

Harrison Jerome, Isabella Torres, Jordan Fletcher, Isha Singh, Ashley Balbuena, Quinn Edington, Maryam Shafa, Senay Emmanuel, Carlos Navarro, Sophia Cassam, and Emilo Anselmo—exemplary ambassadors who served on the student panel during Information Night.

John Fluke Jr.—wingman extraordinaire and PACCAR Foundation board member.

Things to remember: Jostens is happening at Steilacoom High School, meaning we may have to leave RAHS by 6:30 AM the morning of February 6th. Lunch and a t-shirt will be provided, but students are asked to pay $18. Some scholarships are available.

National Honor Society

NHS MEETING 8 DECEMBER. Come hither my young friends, for the day of 8 December we meet, meet at last! The capacity of thyne cardiac muscles is lacking the ability to contain such feelings of joyous wonder. In the divine words of those gods greater than myself, "Tis the season to be jolly!" So fa la la la la and get your butt to Sr. Peterson's room after school on Monday.

Congratulations to the senior class and their slightly scary yet winning mountain of cans! In order from the worst of you lot to the best (the very best I might add), Sophomores with 224, Juniors with 286, Freshmen with 316, and Seniors with 872. Good work guys! You raised 1700 donations in total! How's the dust taste sophomores, juniors, and freshmen? Either get used to being in the seniors' tracks or get a move on with that spirit!

CHRISTMAS CAROLING IS HAPPENING ON 12 DECEMBER 2014 AT NORMANDY PARK ASSISTED LIVING. Do you want to watch the glory that is Sr. Peterson singing? While helping the elderly at the same time?! Yes, you do! See the NHS Board across the hall from Mrs. Cook's room for the signup sheet! Carpools are available!

LOVE YOU GUYS,

NHS

                                                *****************************

Parents, students must not stay at school after 6 PM unless they are directly supervised and participating in a school event/club or extracurricular activity.  This is to ensure student safety and adult supervision while on the school campus.

If you are unable to pick your child up before 6 PM on a regular school day, please arrange a carpool (connect with the PTSA) or make other arrangements for transportation.  For liability reasons, your child must be supervised or find a way home by 6PM.  Thank you!

REMINDER

Many students are failing to meet the dress code requirements this year, and it's becoming a larger issue than ever before. Please review the guidelines for appropriate attire and remind your peers so we can keep our attention on our education and not have to introduce stricter punishment policies for being out of dress code.

Quote of the Week— contributed by Maren Gibson, RAHS sophomore.

Few people who know of the work of Langley, Lilienthal, Pilcher, Maxim and Chanute but will be inclined to believe that long before the year 2000 A.D., and very probably before 1950, a successful aeroplane will have soared and come home safe and sound.

— H. G. Wells, 1901.
