Principal’s Message:

Congratulations to our September Southcenter Rotary Students of the Month Tran Tonnu and Jake Hecla! They were selected for their leadership, citizenship, academic track record, and community service.  They are being honored today at a special Rotary luncheon.

Congratulations and thank you to freshmen Joan Aoanan, Chris Kinney and Loren McDonald  who served as AHS ambassadors at the British American Business Council’s (BABC) 2012 Aerospace Conference in downtown Seattle last Thursday.  They were chaperoned by Ms. Pappas, who reported, “Although only in their first month of high school, all three students did a wonderful job representing the school and themselves during conversations with the likes of Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airlines, Jeff Johnson, President of Boeing/Middle East, Alan Pardoe, Head of Marketing Communications/Airbus, and John Barratt, President/CEO of Teague.”  The theme of this year’s BABC conference was Exploring the Opportunities for Puget Sound Suppliers in the Growing Middle East Aerospace Cluster.  A good portion of the day’s program focused on the amazing projected growth expected for airlines, aircraft manufacturers and downline suppliers of aviation/aerospace and concern regarding how increased positions in aerospace will be filled as current professionals, executives, and other personnel “age out” of the job market.  Students…BIG opportunities in the aerospace workforce await you, and as many of the speakers noted, “Education is the key to providing what is needed in the workforce!”  An Aviation High School education, followed by an aerospace-related education pathway can lead to the career that rewards your passion, knowledge, and skills!

More congratulations are in order for our Skunkworks Women who competed on Saturday at an All-Girls Robotics Competition at Tahoma High School.  Coaches Steele and Wilson reported that the team just got better and better throughout the day, finishing 5th in qualifying, which led to their being the #1 pick in alliance selection.  In the elimination rounds, our alliance was undefeated and was crowned champions of the first annual Girls Generation event!  Go, AHS Women!!  We are so proud of you!  Team members were:
·         Drive Team & Pit Crew:  Jordan Gardner (driver), Grace Cieszkiewicz (operator), Camila Palacio (team captain), Maryam Shafa, Paula Cieszkiewicz and Kira Walters (Safety Lead).
·         Scouting:  Kirsten Noble (lead), Alex Cail, Maggie Vader, Madeline Warnes, Gloria Whang, Melissa Will, Jaclyn Wing, and Wendy Zaballos.  Wendy also designed the team’s Girls Generation Skunks button!
Go AHS women!

To AHS Parents/Guardians:
·         Sincere thanks to all of you who attended our fall Evening of Learning last week!  Your participation in your son’s or daughter’s school life makes a positive difference in school success.  Know that you are very much appreciated!

·         VERY IMPORTANT: In the calendar that your child should have brought home at the start of the school year, there was a form that looked like this:

Please note, parents, that the form is to be returned only if you do NOT want your child to be photographed or videotaped.  We are operating under the assumption that if you haven’t returned the form, it is okay for your child to be included when the media reports on an AHS event or when we do so ourselves.  If this is not the case, please return this form by the end of the week to Pamela Suiaunoa, Office Manager.  Your student (or you) can hand deliver it to Pamela in the Main Office.  (FYI if you are new to the AHS community:  AHS is frequently in the news.  I expect that we will be even more so as we relocate to our new school at The Museum of Flight.)

In closing this week’s message, I want to encourage students and families to attend the Life After High School Fair at Mt. Rainier this Wednesday evening from 5:30-8:30 p.m.  This event is for grades 7 – 12.  There will be 100 College & Career Booths, Workshops on: FAFSA, Scholarships, Grants, College Essay Writing, Making College More Affordable for Families, College Bound Scholarship and more.  For more information contact Ms. Carper! As a gentle reminder, every student who is accepted to AHS is expected to apply to at least two colleges during senior year…and more importantly, to GO and EARN A DEGREE!  We take our mission seriously and want to do all we can to support students and families as they plan for the post-secondary experience.

Here’s to an awesome week of learning and spirit!  I am deeply honored to be your principal.

Only humans can pass this gift of life on to other humans. You should all be very proud because you just impacted your community in a meaningful way! On behalf of the AHS National Honor Society board (Sureetha McCain, Max Kenyon, Camila Palacio, and Sasha Friedrich) and Advisor Mr. Peterson, we congratulate you and hope to see you again on 22nd May 2013 for our second blood drive of the school year.
