Principal’s Message:

It’s officially fall, even though the weather continues to make us believe it could still be summer.  The change of season reminds me of how much I love good crisp apples fresh from the orchards of Eastern Washington where I grew up and how much I appreciate the beauty of nature that is unique to fall.  It also reminds me, as an educator, that it’s time to meet and greet our parents and let them be learners at our fall open house! As a reminder, parents/guardians:  Open House/Evening of Learning is being held Tuesday evening, September 25!  Some of you may wish to join Counselor Carper and Math instructor Karen Wilson for a pre-session on Study Skills that starts at 4:50 p.m. and concludes at 5:35 p.m.  We also hope that many of you will come early to attend the Data Walk in the Gymnasium that will be open from 4:50-5:55 p.m.  The official welcoming address will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Gymnasium.

Thank you to all staff and students who interacted with our many visitors last week.  Hosting three groups was a bit over the top, but they left being very impressed with our program and all of you!  Know that you are very appreciated.

This past Saturday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Wings of Heroes Gala at the Museum of Flight, along with 999 other guests who were there to salute the adventurers and innovators who made it possible for humans to escape Earth’s bounds and to celebrate the visionaries and entrepreneurs who are destined to lead us to even greater heights.  The program promised it would be a once-in-a-lifetime event, where an extraordinary past meets an incredible future…where the heroes of the last 50 years mingle with the trailblazers of the next.  Indeed it was that and much, much more!  I found myself caught by surprise at how moving the program became as the stage filled with astronauts, cosmonauts, flight engineers, and commanders including our own Washington native Dr. Bonnie Dunbar.   And, as the speakers took their turn at the podium, time and again they spoke of their hope that the youth of today would be inspired to take their work to new levels of discovery; they spoke of the imperative need for a STEM-proficient world; and CEO/President Doug King of the Museum of Flight assured the entire audience that students at Aviation High School would be among the top talent who would innovate our nation’s future.  The audience applauded loudly and appreciatively each time Aviation High School was mentioned, and I’m just sure that my applause must have been heard over the others!  I have thought the same as Mr. King since we first began planning Aviation High School, but on Saturday evening as I mixed and mingled in the Airpark prior to convening in the “tent” for the ceremony, I had only to look north and see the roofline of our new school to just know in my soul that one day many of you will be recognized as heroes, too. Make it so…because you’re already on your way!

Enjoy this busy week of learning…and keep reading for new information and opportunities!  As always, I am deeply honored to be your principal.
                                                                                                                                                ~Reba G.

On Wednesday, September 12 they competed against the more experienced Bellevue HS on our own fields, and held their own, though they lost 7-11. Last Friday, September 21 they commuted up to Magnolia after school to compete against Ballard HS, and they fought valiantly. Their next game is on Friday, September 18 against Juanita HS, in the AHS fields. Feel free to come support them. Congratulations to the team for their commitment!
