Principal’s Message:
Second quarter of the 2012-2013 school year begins today. Report cards will be mailed home by week’s end. Now is a good time to reflect on your progress and refine your academic learning goals for second quarter. Quarterly grades are a progress indicator; semester grades are those that remain on your transcript and count toward meeting graduation requirements and having a competitive college application. Make your learning count in building your college-going transcript!

Congratulations and thanks are extended to:
  • Camilia Palacio, Austin McHenry, Mary Robins and Ms. Burr for presenting at the State Multicultural Education Conference this past Saturday. The conference theme this year was career readiness, so our students shared their internship and summer experiences that are preparing them for both college and career. Thank you, students and Ms. Burr, for giving up part of your Saturday to serve in this important ambassador role. 
  • Freshman Hanna Riley who recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that can be earned in Cadette Girl Scouting and the second highest award available through Girl Scouts. Hanna earned this award by teaching 60 sixth graders how to prepare for Camp Waskowitz and/or Girl Scout camping. Congratulations, Hanna, for being such an exemplary model of community spirit and volunteerism!
  • All the students who participated in our recruitment presentation to Sylvester Middle School 8th graders last Friday: Jessi Mau, Daniel Palacio, Sophia Cassam, Jonah Graves, Emilio Anselma, Camilia Palacio, Lauren Crom, Paula Cieszkiewicz, Austin McHenry, Liam Burke, Hunter McSwain, and Jacob Wagner. You were outstanding ambassadors! Thank you!

A reminder to seniors planning to pursue an engineering degree and career, Rolls Royce is offering two $5,000 scholarship awards! Essays are due to Ms. Carper and to me by this Thursday!

Our annual auction, sponsored by the PTSA will be held this Saturday evening at the magnificent Museum of Flight. I am looking forward to seeing parents and friends of AHS at this event that makes such a tremendous difference in our ability to provide a quality education to our students. Thank you, PTSA, for your hard work and stellar commitment on behalf of our entire learning community!

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.  

New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED.   This is change from previous practice.   We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

The Joe Sutter dinner, on Saturday evening November 17th, is a wonderful opportunity for you to network and learn from professionals in the aviation/aeronautical industry.  It’s a dress-up event with a fancy dinner, and this year the Featured Speaker is our own Principal/CEO Reba Gilman. Tickets are normally $125 but our PTSA and the Royal Aeronautical Society will be sponsoring some of our students to attend.  Please write a short letter expressing your interest in attending and submit your short letter to Julie Burr in the Career Center by the end of the school day on Friday, November 2, 2012.  Students selected to attend the event will be notified shortly after the deadline.  You can find more information about the event at http://www.seattle-raes.org/events/JoeSutterDinner.asp

Interested in piloting Office 365, a cloud-based system for applications and document storage?  Mr. Kelly is seeking 10 students who are available after school on November 13th from 3:45-4:15 for an information session.   Drop a note off in Mr. Kelly’s office to express your interest and willingness to participate in the pilot study.


Canned Food Drive 
Beginning on October 29, 2012, National Honor Society is hosting a canned food competition.  
The food will be donated to Northwest Harvest, which is hosting a charity event for those who cannot afford to buy their own food. Please donate any number of canned foods! Grocery shopping or cleaning up your pantry can be a gift to others!  Bring your cans to the cafeteria.  The winning class will receive 100 spirit points and an ice cream party. The competition ends on November 9th, so hurry and bring in your canned foods!

FROM YOUR ASB:
  • October Advisory Competition: AHS STUDENTS!!!! Are you excited for our first advisory competition? Are you ready to show us your creativity? The first advisory competition is on Wednesday, October 31st, 2012 during advisory. Each advisory will either carve or paint a pumpkin. Advisories will also engineer a scarecrow. Remember to bring materials for the scarecrow because ASB will be providing pumpkin, paint or carving kits only. BE CREATIVE! HAVE FUN! Also, don't forget to put your advisor's name on both the pumpkin and the scarecrow!

·          We Scare Hunger: This Halloween AHS students are invited to join 15 other high schools from around the region to trick-or-treat and collect food for the hungry. We will be gathering for a short rally in the Federal Way Lowe's parking lot at 7pm, and will break away from there to separate routes to collect food until approximately 9pm. We will then bring our haul back to Lowe's parking lot to see if we meet our goal of filling two trucks with food!

We're all too old to trick-or-treat for candy anyway, so come join us for a great cause and collect community service hours! BONUS: This activity qualifies students to earn the "local" half of admission to We Day Seattle in March, a leadership oriented concert and motivational speaking event.   • Spirit Shack: Remember to check out the Spirit Shack every Friday during lunch. ASB will be selling AHS apparel every Friday during lunch. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women at the high-school level for their computing related achievements and interests. ONE PARENT'S PLEA FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE PTSA AUCTION NOVEMBER 3rd
Besides being the PTSA President, I have two kids at Aviation HS. One is a senior and one is a freshman. That has given me a good exposure to the AHS experience. My conclusion so far - Aviation High School is simply the best high school education our kids can get in the State of Washington, public or private. That it is a competitive public school is an added bonus. It is a testament to the vision, leadership and quality of the Highline School District, Reba Gilman, the teachers and staff that our kids have this opportunity - but they cannot do it alone. The school receives only $35,000 in public funding to operate the school beyond salaries and facility management. Your involvement in funding additional school costs and activities is critical. Consider what a private school would expect from you. The excellence at Aviation HS is a real bargain. We need your help. The annual auction is the greatest (but not the only) source of funds to the PTSA. This chart shows how the PTSA funds are spent annually. The largest section, School Grants includes $35,000 to the school primarily earmarked for technology. It also includes a grant to every teacher for supplies for their classroom and the costs of the Mentor program. School Enrichment covers PTSA/Dan Hartley scholarships, Phoenix Flyer - the student newspaper, the Reflections program, Staff Appreciation & the Annual Picnic before school starts. The School Events covers Graduation events, the Blue Angels event, the Pathfinder Gala and the Ice Cream Social on the first day of school. The Program Expenses covers career mentoring activities, Science Olympiad, Speech & Debate and Ultimate Frisbee. G&A covers PTSA dues to the WAPTA association, printing, supplies, insurance, etc.

Principal’s Message:

“Time flies”, as the trite but true saying goes. Friday is the end of first quarter, which signals that projects are due, presentations to industry experts are highly likely, and many of you may just be a bit more anxious than usual as you complete quarter exams and demonstrate your learning in various ways.  Last week was a tremendously busy one for most everyone. My wish for you this week is that you prioritize your activities and responsibilities to make learning come first. Do your best…be your best…and remember to breathe and enjoy the process of learning.

Recruitment begins in Highline District middle schools, starting this Friday morning at Sylvester Middle School.  I will be calling on some of you to share your learning in classes and as members of our sports-of-the-mind teams and other activities.  If you have a special interest in presenting some aspect of your learning, please let me know.  We are next scheduled to present at Chinook Middle School on October 26 and at Pacific Middle School on November 30. Cascade MS has not yet been scheduled.  Evening information programs for eighth graders and parents are also quickly approaching; the first one will be November 8, next on December 6, and final program on January 10.   You may be asked by a teacher or by administration to participate in one of these very important events…or to assist with the interviewing of students or serving as a guide for students who wish to visit for a day.  Stay tuned for more information.

I am encouraging all juniors to consider applying for the Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program.  It is a way to stretch your learning in STEM while enhancing your college-going transcript.  This year, for the first time ever, WAS is partnering with the University of Washington to offer college credit for the experience.  This represents an even greater opportunity for those who are accepted to the program.  Last year, Jacob Wagner, Dustin Werran, Savannah Mattson, and Tran Tonnu were accepted to WAS and the summer residency program.  They will be sharing their learning with you this Wednesday in all-junior assembly in the gym during Advisory.  Applications are due November 9.  More information is available at  http://www.museumofflight.org/washingtonaerospacescholars if you want to get an early start to applying, which I encourage you to do since it is a very competitive application process!

And next…to anyone who was involved in planning, organizing, or participating in any way in last weekend’s Pathfinder Gala, I extend my sincere appreciation for the sheer joy of being part of such a magnificent event!  Honorees Bill Ayer, Barbara Morgan, and George Mueller all had astonishing stories to share and will forever be my heroes.  Peter Morton gets a gold medal for being a master at being a master of ceremonies for the event and a wingman extraordinaire to Aviation High School! He was also a sponsor, along with ERAU, Purdue, and University of North Dakota who all stepped up to new levels as did Peter and Sarah Anderson of Galvin Flying, John & Nancy Purvis, Don & Dori Ferrrel from Sea-Tec Consulting, James & Sherry Raisbeck, Gene Nora Jessen, Bill Ayer, the Museum of Flight and our own AHS PTSA! It was a magical and memorable evening in every way!  Special kudos goes to our Pathfinder interns for the work they have done over this past year to prepare for the evening and the opportunity to dine with and introduce their honorees.  Interns were Anthea Phuong, Savannah Mattson, Lori Baca, Andrea Wooley, Tran Tonnu and Robyn Zaches—a group of very poised and confident young women who represented themselves and AHS in stellar fashion! Special thanks, too, to the students who, along with the Pathfinder interns, participated in Friday’s VIP meeting and briefing—Jacob Wagner, Camila Palacio, Hunter McSwain, DeAundre Cola, Monique Sternik, Lauren Crom, Dustin Werran, Katie McConville, Jake Hecla, Sophia Cassam, Jacob Hoag and Austin Spores. They shared their internship and enhanced experiences that are preparing them for college and career and were offered tips from the guests to be even better prepared.  Great job, everyone!

Our mighty Skunkworks Robotics team held their annual Spaghetti Dinner & Dessert Auction this past Friday evening, and from all reports, it was a huge success!  Congratulations to the team, parents, mentors, and coaches for making it an enjoyable and profitable event. I’ve heard that if you don’t mind paying $400 for a couple dozen cookies, Mrs. Hiranaka is your go-to baker. Must be gold in those chocolate chip morsels!

And finally, speaking of auctions…our BIG annual auction, sponsored by the PTSA, is our next BIG AHS event!  November 3rd is the date. Location is Museum of Flight.  Tickets are still available, although going quickly…and auction items are still needed and being accepted through October 29.  Procurement and other auction information can be accessed at ahsauction@aviationptsa.org  And, in this week’s edition of the NOTAM, in the “From the PTSA” section, you will find an inspiring message from PTSA President Steve Burke.  I encourage everyone in the AHS community to read it.  Thank you, Steve and PTSA leadership, for your superb support of our school and quality learning for your children!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to Khader Gouesse, Jaclyn Wing, Phansa Chaonpoj, Ethan Hunt and Brian Gonzalez.  After a training session two weeks ago, these students were invited to help Boeing engineers deliver their MECA (Making Engineering Cool Again!) program to 6th grade science students at McKnight Middle School in Renton.  Over the course of the school day last Monday, the students and engineers paired up and presented to 15 classrooms full of 6th graders who enjoyed discussions and experiments to learn about weight and lift, thrust and drag and interplanetary exploration.  It was a win-win-win situation – McKnight students enjoyed the presentations, AHS students had an opportunity to share their knowledge of aviation/aerospace, and Boeing engineers had great assistants! The program was well received, and these and other AHS students will work with the Boeing Leadership/Development/Excellence group to continue to improve the program and have future opportunities to deliver MECA to middle school students around the Puget Sound Region.  Watch for future opportunities posted in the Career Center.

We Have a Graduation Date for the Class of 2013!  Mark your calendars for June 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Burien.

Eighteen AHS students will be attending the AIAA Technical Symposium on Saturday, November 3rd and a few more spaces have opened up for more.  There will be speakers from Boeing, Andrews Apace, Blue Origin, Planetary Resources and others plus a young professionals gathering.  Please email or tell Ms. Burr in the Career Center by the end of the day Monday if you want to attend, it’s free and includes lunch! 

Work at the GE Aviation Event
Applications are now available in Room 11 for assisting GE Aviation staff during their annual 1000-guest Customer Appreciation event. An amazing group of aviation executives, manufacturers, sales personnel, airline officials and employees will be in attendance. A variety of responsibilities will be performed by students to make the event a success.  This is a commitment of:

o    A mandatory one-hour after school training session, Tuesday, November 27, 3:45-4:45pm, Room 2
o   5+ hours (5-10pm) working on Tuesday, December 4 at the event held at the Museum of Flight.
If you are interested in helping during their annual 1,000-person customer appreciation event, even if you have signed up already, please complete the application return it to Ms. Pappas or Ms. Fitzpatrick no later than Friday, November 9.  Up to 20 students will be selected.

It also includes a grant to every teacher for supplies for their classroom and the costs of the Mentor program. School Enrichment covers PTSA/Dan Hartley scholarships, Phoenix Flyer - the student newspaper, the Reflections program, Staff Appreciation & the Annual Picnic before school starts. The School Events covers Graduation events, the Blue Angels event, the Pathfinder Gala and the Ice Cream Social on the first day of school. The Program Expenses covers career mentoring activities, Science Olympiad, Speech & Debate and Ultimate Frisbee. G&A covers PTSA dues to the WAPTA association, printing, supplies, insurance, etc.

If you can express an idea *without words* PTSA would love to have your experiments for our fall festivities.  Photos, flat artwork in any medium, music recordings, and original dance recordings that express something inspired by "The Magic of a Moment...."  are accepted from now until about Thanksgiving.  Items turned in to the office before Nov 1 will be displayed at the check-in at the PTSA Auction.

* Film shorts, even with dialog, are, of course, also accepted.  And for the wordophiliacs there is a literature category for lyrics, scripts, fiction, essays, etc of 2,000 or fewer words.

·         Class of 2013 Grad Party Planning Meeting

Party planning will never be so much fun as when we organize a party for the Class of 2013! Please join in and stop by the meeting to help make this year's grad party the best one yet! Volunteers will be needed for food, decorations, chaperones and more. If you want to be in the loop but can't make the meeting, that is fine too...just email Mindy McClean at

The NACAC National College Fair will take place at the Washington State Convention Center on Saturday, November 3.  Parents and students participating in National College Fairs meet one-on-one with representatives from colleges and universities to discuss admission and financial aid opportunities at their respective institutions.
