Principal’s Message:

Greetings, Scholars!  We have now officially launched a new school year, with 430 students enrolled in grades 9-12.  Your spirit was certainly felt last week in our first school assembly as well as in classrooms and hallways.  May it continue throughout the year as you show the true characteristics of being a Phoenix—perseverance, curiosity, being a trusted wingman, agility, intellectual pursuit, love of learning and life—and whatever individual spin you choose to place on our colorful mascot!

The NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is our version of what most schools call their bulletin.  We will publish it at the start of each week and post it on both our new school website www.highlineschools.org/aviation as well as the PTSA website www.aviationptsa.org.  It is our primary communication tool for students, parents and families, and community supporters.  As such, we encourage you to read it carefully each week to ensure that you are aware of exciting and important events that will enhance your AHS experience.  On most weeks, we’ll have it posted by Sunday evening on the AHS website, providing an opportunity for you to get a jump start on the week’s activities and announcements of opportunities.  Your teachers will also review the NOTAM in Advisory each week and post a copy in their classroom.  Be in the know by making a habit of reading the NOTAM each week.  You may even see your name included in it as I frequently congratulate students for various accomplishments.

In this week’s edition of the NOTAM, I am extending congratulations to:
·         The ASB Officers, Class Captains, and Spirit Squad members for planning a very special opening day assembly that welcomed everyone to AHS.  I also commend you on the theme you have selected for this year—Service—and encourage everyone to get involved in doing good deeds for others.
·         Our students who are passionate about flight and becoming pilots:
o   Taka Sano who has been taking flight lessons from Galvin Flying Services at Boeing Field soloed this past weekend!  Kudos, Taka!
o   Scott Sluys, 2012 AHS graduate, earned his private pilot certificate this summer during his very first quarter of enrollment at the University of North Dakota!
o   Christian Pirotte, AHS alum in the Class of 2009, also earned his private pilot certificate this summer.  Christian attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is serving as President of the ERAU Student Body during his final year of college.
o   Raj DeYoung, our resident Australian, for earning his glider certificate and private pilot’s license!
·         All students who interned this summer!  A total of 81 students experienced the workplace this summer, working in various STEM companies—the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Luma Technologies, Korry Manufacturing, Dynon Avionics, Clay Lacy Aviation, Planetary Resources, Raisbeck Engineering, Aerotec Engineering, the Museum of Flight, OMAX, LIGO in Richland, Washington, and many more extraordinary places! Students, if you wish to have an internship this year, I encourage you to make frequent checks to the Counseling and Career Center to see what’s available. Our goal is for ALL of you to have a mentor and an internship during your high school years to inform your thinking about college and career.   Ms. Burr is your go-to person for mentoring and internships.
·         All students who participated in an extended learning experience this summer!  I know that some AHS students were selected for college programs (Paula Cieszkiewicz, for example, applied to and was selected for UW’s Math Academy). Other students participated in summer school programs at the Puget Sound Skills Center or elsewhere.  A few AHS students even participated in a summer Algebra refresher course at AHS, facilitated by one of our mentors.  We hope to offer it again next year.

I know that there are many students who engage in astonishing experiences during the summer.  I would love to hear about them (as well as school-year experiences) and perhaps mention your name in a future edition of the NOTAM.  I also encourage you to share your experiences with other AHS students so that they, too, might capitalize on a future resume-building, learning experience!

Many of you have already started to ask, “What is the date of this year’s Pathfinder Gala at the Museum of Flight?  It’s Saturday, October 20th, and I’m pleased to announce that our primary sponsors of AHS students will again be Peter & Sarah Anderson of Galvin Flying and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Additional sponsorships for a few students will be provided by University of North Dakota and Purdue University as well as our PTSA and perhaps a few individual donors.  This year, the application process will be primarily handled by Ms. Burr in collaboration with me and the Pathfinder interns Robyn Zaches, Lori Baca, Savannah Mattson, Tran Tonnu, Andrea Wooley and Anthea Phuong.  Application packets will be available in the Career Center by Thursday of this week, and essays are due by September 28 to Ms. Burr.  Our practice in selecting Pathfinder attendees is to consider freshmen and others who have never attended a Pathfinder Gala.  That doesn’t mean, however, that upper classmen should not apply!  At the present time, we have been allocated 84 tickets.  (Special note to freshmen: The application packet will provide detailed information about this exciting event. Your teachers and advisor will explain more.  And…if you are selected, you will learn a LOT at the required Etiquette and Networking Session that will be held after school on October 11.)

I want to encourage everyone to also consider attending a special after-school mentoring session sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association on September 19.  See the Announcements section of the NOTAM for specific details!

And with that…I wish you an exceptional week of learning!  I am honored to be your principal—Reba G.

AFTER SCHOOL FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITY

The Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association (PNBAA) has a long history with Aviation High School, providing scholarships to deserving students each year.  This year, our relationship with PNBAA is growing - the evening before their Regional Forum begins, they are hosting a Mentoring Session for high school students who are passionate about aviation and aerospace.  AHS is their selected school of choice for participation!  A special session is being held in which there will be brief presentations from business aviation experts from various sectors of the industry, explaining the career opportunities that may be available to you in your future.  There will also be time to speak one-on-one with exhibitors, pilots, and others as well as tour a static display of business aircraft.
We are so excited about this opportunity, that an official, after-school-hours field trip has been organized.  Interested students should contact Ms. Pappas or Dr. Edgerton - there are only 75 slots available.

Official field trip requests and authorization forms are available in Room 11.
Date of the field trip:  Wednesday, September 19th
