Principal’s Message:

Congratulations to Mary Robins and Jacob Wagner for representing AHS at the Governor’s Aerospace Summit in Spokane last Thursday.  They shared their summer internship experiences at Raisbeck Engineering and Luma Technologies, emphasizing the importance of high school students gaining workplace experience in preparation for both college and career.  They delivered a strong message to the Governor, state legislators, and approximately 200 aviation leaders in attendance: “If you want to ensure the future of your workforce, open your doors to high schoolers and trust us to do high level work.”  They were heard by all and were the highlight of the day-long program!

This week, the Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association (PNBAA) is holding its Regional Forum in Seattle.  They are sponsoring a golf tournament on Wednesday, designating the proceeds to Aviation High School for scholarship awards.  Brothers Allen and Andrew May will be representing AHS, swinging their clubs like pros at the Newcastle Golf Course that day.  Let’s wish them well and thank them for doing the honors on behalf of this year’s Seniors who will contend for the scholarship awards.

Many thanks to the group of future commercial pilots who met with executives from United Airlines, Delta Airlines and Fed Ex last week!  They were impressed with the professional manner in which you presented yourselves and inspired by your commitment to pursue a pilot career.  Hopefully, if we all work together, you will all be able to enjoy a bright future in aviation without being steeped in debt!  It’s heartening to know that the industry is working now to ensure that future for you and for their airline companies.

To help you plan for this week as well as other events in September, October and November, I provide the following:
·         Wednesday is an after-school field trip to Clay Lacy Aviation for a mentoring session, sponsored by PNBAA.  One school bus will transport approximately 50 students, and more can attend if you have your own transportation to and from the site.  See Ms. Pappas for further information—TODAY!
·         The VIPS who will be on our campus tomorrow (Tuesday) include Superintendent Tim Payne, a board member, and a teacher from the College Place School District in the Southeast corner of WA State.  They are in the planning and development stages for a new secondary school in their area, so they are visiting AHS to gain insights about how we created our particular model.  Please welcome them to your classes and interact with them as may be appropriate.  A group of students will be asked to meet with them during lunch time.  Immediately following lunch, we will host a VIP from the University of North Dakota, accompanied by our AHS Wingman Peter Morton. Friday’s VIPs are School Board Directors from various districts in WA State.  Two separate groups will be visiting us that morning.
·         Next Tuesday, September 25 is our fall open house called An Evening of Learning. Students, please remember to fill out your schedule on the invitation that was mailed to your parents.  And just a gentle reminder that unless you (students) have been asked to help out that evening, it’s a parents-only evening.  We simply don’t have capacity in classrooms to accommodate both students and parents. Thank you for understanding!
·         Have you submitted your application for the Pathfinder Gala that will be held at the Museum of Flight on October 20?  If not, please do so as soon as possible.  It is a magnificent, dress-up event at which you will be inspired by the stories of the three Pathfinder honorees as well as the other guests you will meet.  See Ms. Burr if you need an application or more information.  And, mark October 11 from 3:45-5:45 p.m. for Etiquette Training if you are selected!  And…if you are worried that you may not have the right clothes for such an event, worry not!  If you are selected and need some help, we will provide it!
·         Please be sure to get your school picture taken on Wednesday if you did not do so at registration!  Even if you are not purchasing an ASB card, we need your picture for the yearbook as well as identification purposes.  Thank you!
·         October Events:
o   Life After High School Event, October 3 at Mt. Rainier High School (see Announcements section for more info; all students grades 9-12 & families encouraged to attend!)
o   No School Friday, October 12
o   Robotics Spaghetti Dinner, October 19
o   End of First Quarter, October 26
·         Start thinking about November events:
o   PTSA Auction on November 3 at the Museum of Flight—Teri Katzer is the Auction Chair & can be reached at tkatzer@msn.com ; student workers are most likely still needed; parents, too!
o   November 8 will be our first Information Night program for 8th graders & families.
o   Veteran’s Day is November 12—No school.
o   Joe Sutter Dinner on November 17, sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society. AHS students who received Joe Sutter and Rolls Royce scholarships will be honored as part of the program.  There will be sponsorships for a number of additional AHS students, so stay tuned to the NOTAM for further information. I am humbled that the Society has asked me to be the keynote speaker this year.  The title of my presentation is The Aviation High School Success Story – Enhancing the Future of Puget Sound Aerospace Dominance.  Synopsis:  Reinventing High School: How an urban public school became an incubator for the next generation of Aviation and Aerospace innovators. Hope to see some familiar faces from our learning community in the audience that evening.  I’ll certainly be talking about you!
o   Student Led Conferences are November 19 & 20.
o   Thanksgiving break is November 21-23.
·         Please read the announcements!  There are a lot of new ones this week with exciting opportunities!

Enjoy this week of learning and active involvement in a variety of activities.  I am most honored to your principal!
                                                                                                                                    ~Reba G.
