Yes, it is true; this is the final NOTAM for 2015! However, given the perpetual energy driving our community, there are a number of New Announcements for your attention. I am pleased to announce that Debi Tranholt was hired as our new part-time bookkeeper. This is a new position for RAHS, and comes in response the increased demands around our scholarship accounts and additional ASB clubs. Debi brings a wonderful business-office background to us, and is thrilled to expand her current role beyond the Career Readiness Center assistant. Stop by the Career Readiness Center and offer your congratulations!
I’ll keep this week’s message brief, but focused on wishing you a joyful and blessed holiday. May your holiday plans include time to relax, recharge, and enjoy family and friends. Speech and debate is looking for judges!
The debate team has a tournament at University of Puget Sound all day January, 8 - 9 and is looking for judges to help at the tournament. In order to attend and compete at tournaments, judges are required and we would very much appreciate the help in that capacity. Judges would receive transportation from school to the University and complementary food and beverage once there. Judging takes place from early morning to late evening, but are split into shifts. No prior knowledge is necessary.

VEX Robotics
On Saturday RAHS’s Skunk Works Robotics teams held our first VEX tournament at RAHS. The event was a resounding success with 24 teams from all over western Washington participating, including our own three VEX teams and a team from Pacific Middle School competing in their first ever VEX tournament. Teams played all day and the elimination rounds were exciting. The event concluded with awards around 5 o’clock which was right on schedule. Thanks go to Mr. Bowlin for organizing the event and volunteers from both the VEX team and the FRC team from RAHS who helped put together the fields and run the event all day. Special thanks go to all of the parents and friends of the Skunks who volunteered in several capacities; in particular Robot inspecting and Judging. Less than a month now before the FRC team will find out their new game for 2016!! GO SKUNKS!!!

Come and join the RAHS Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at their first meeting on Thursday, December 17, after school in Mrs. Olsen’s room 1630, 3:30 PM. There will be snacks to share and some fun activities. Everyone is welcome.

Gentlemen of RAHS:
Come join us this Friday the 18th at lunch in the PLC for our second annual Dude's Donut Day! We'll come together as men to talk about being a man both at our school and in our society, listen to motivational speeches, and of course eat delicious food together. Jostens Leadership Conference
RAHS will be sending a delegation of student leaders to the Jostens Leadership Conference on Friday, February 5th, hosted by Kentlake High School. If yes, do not worry as Science Olympiad has come to the rescue. For the past couple of weeks, Science Olympiad has worked with the wonderful RAHS staff to create a cookbook with each staff member’s favorite recipes. With over 35 recipes, this cookbook offers many different options for your meal.
These limited edition cookbooks go on sale December 16th to December 18th for only $7. They will be on sale during lunch, on the second floor hallway (right above the stairs). Get ready to cook, learn, and have fun!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 2nd annual Christmas caroling tour this past Friday. It was a great way to ring in the Christmas spirit and I'm sure the residents at Normandy Park Assisted Living and Wesley Homes truly appreciated your angelic voices.

Mohan Skiing & Boarding
Ever want to take skiing or snowboarding lessons? A bus departs from the Aviation High School parking lot at 2:30 PM and returns at approximately 11:00 PM on Fridays January 15, 22, 29 and February 5, 12, and 26. If you register by December 15, 2015 the cost of bus and lessons is $375.00. There is a late registration fee of $20 after December 15, 2015. Lesson and bus only packages are also available. Student expressions on the theme of "Let Your Imagination Fly" will be accepted in the office until Winter Break Begins or by appointment if the work needs special handling. Eligible genres (including multiple sub-genres) include techniques in: Photography; flat Visual art less than 18 x 24"; Poems/Scripts/Literary Essays. Also accepted are compositions of one student performed by self or others such as Music Composition; Choreography; and Video.

Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area. Please do not make U-turns here, but turn around at the west end of the building. Our student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school. Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.
Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk. If a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot. Thank you parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.
Our Success Dean, Mr. Nick Anderson provides services for students. He will be tutoring freshmen on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM and sophomores, juniors and seniors on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM. The sessions will be held in Mr. Hoehne’s classroom, 3510.
Health room
Students, if you have a fever, persistent cough, or the flu, please stay home and rest. Lately, a growing number of students have asked to use the health room to take a nap. The health room is designed to support students with legitimate health-related needs—students who are ill remain the health room’s top priority. Once a student is checked into the health room, a decision is made after 15 minutes to determine if the student should be sent home or return to class. The parents are called if a student has a fever, or the student shares that they are not feeling well enough to return to class. Thank you for your cooperation and for modeling good public health practices.

Seattle RAeS Board
The Royal Aeronautical Society was formed in 1866 by the 8th Duke of Argyll and a group of “aerial navigation enthusiasts”. This unique group set about prompting heavier-than-air flight 37 years before the Wright brothers made their first successful, powered flight.
The Seattle branch was formed in 1999 and has a steadily growing membership and a strong lecture program culminating in the annual November Black-Tie Dinner Lecture which is named in honor of Joe Sutter, the renowned “Father of the 747”. The Seattle affiliate enjoys a close relationship with the Museum of Flight where lectures and events generally take place. RAHS has maintained a close bond with RAeS over the past ten years through both mentorships and internships.
MENTORS/MENTEES -- We have just one week left of 2015. Make your appointments now to meet for December with your mentor/mentees. SUMMER INTERNSHIPS -- Following the December holidays, RAHS will begin posting internship opportunities for summer 2016. Internships will be posted in the CAREER CENTER and in the weekly NOTAM. Depending on the particulars, positions will be posted 2-3 weeks prior to deadlines for applications. All applications will be read and reviewed. Finalists will be selected for in-person interviews depending of the needs and requirements of the particular internship. Interviews will be conducted at RAHS during the afternoon periods and immediately after school. Final awardees will be announced the week following conducted interviews. For planning purposes, roughly 60% of internships are paid positions with the remainder being unpaid. All internships are eligible for RAHS credit. Credit is awarded following submission of all appropriate paperwork to the RAHS CAREER CENTER. CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE – The U.S. House of Representatives has announced the launch of the second annual "Congressional App Challenge” (CAC) designed to encourage high school students nationwide to use their creativity to inspire new apps for a mobile, tablet, or computer devices in the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academic Challenge.
