THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back, scholars, and Happy New Year!  I look forward to hearing about the highlights of your vacation, and hope you thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful time away with family and friends. May you feel fully recharged and ready to do your best learning as we approach the end of the first semester.  As a reminder, the end of the semester is Thursday, January 28.  There is no school for students on Friday, January 29, and the report cards are mailed home by February 12.

Just before we headed into the holiday break—at the December PTSA general meeting, our auction co-chairs, Emily Thatcher and Kelley Araki, elatedly shared fantastic financial news. The annual auction at the Museum of Flight raised a record net revenue of $151, 168.30!  Please join me in thanking Ms. Thatcher and Ms. Araki for their leadership.  I am grateful to them, and for the generous contributions from our sponsors, donors, parents, RAHS staff, and volunteers.  Planning for next year’s auction is already underway, and Ms. Thatcher and Ms. Araki sent a reminder to parents to check with their company's Human Resources department about the availability of gift-matching programs.

The week prior to winter break was bursting with activity, and a cadre of industry experts volunteered their time and energy to judge the heat shield designs—one of RAHS’ signature projects.  Many of the engineers and pilots have judged this project for several years, and I want to thank each one for their direct support to make a positive impact on student learning.  Please join me in thanking         Gene Arnold, Dustin Biggerstaff, Murray Booth, Katie Brown, Barry Cossel, Ben Ellison, Walter Fellows, John Garrett, John Hed, Jennifer Henderson, Dan Hrehov, Duane Jackson, Jamie Katzer, Clint Jones, Richard Magarro, Miguel Marmol, Amanda Mazzenga,Doug McLean, Jennifer Kennedy, Michael Miller, Flash Parlini, Barbara Sando, Dan Slaton, John Sommerville, Denny Tremble, Kevin Wooley, Jim Young, and Dieter Zube.  A special thank you is due to Mr. McComb for his superb coordination, and continued innovation on the heat-shield project.

There was one extra bit of great news that arrived during the final week December. I want to congratulate Erin Demaree for earning her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are honored by Erin’s outstanding accolade.

The month of January kicks off the planning session for our master schedule team.  The team will address and plan for changes to our instructional program and registration process.  It is important for the master schedule team to hear from you.  They are soliciting input from students, staff, parents, and industry partners about registration, existing courses, and suggestions for new classes.  Please forward your ideas by email to Ms. Nurzhanov, Nuka.Nurzhanov@highlineschools.org, before January 19.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that we have a new school nurse, Tracie Kovac.  Ms. Kovac’s is scheduled to support our community on Thursday mornings.  Please stop by the health room to say hello to nurse Tracie.

The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Ms. Thatcher and Ms. Araki—for leading the PTSA Auction, and raising a record amount of money to support for our learning community.

Ross Bajocich, Elias Benevedes, Tucker Bowlin, Cooper Brown, Alexis Chavez, Victor Current, Erin Demaree, Ian Demaree, Rachel Demaree, Simon Derrer, Zuzanna Dominik, Patrick Eaton, Francesca Gaerlan, Patrick Galt, Sydney Gardner, Michael Heidal, Harrison Jerome, Alex Kanemasu, Thomas Kirby, Amanda Korn, Michael Larson, Josh Markovich, Josef Matuska, Loren McDonald, Henry Meyerson, Linh Ngo, Najib Osman, Hannah Park, Tanjai Ploykao, Daniel Rusinko, Maryam Shafa, Josh Sherbrooke, Benton Smith, Lauren Smith, Davin Sones, Garnet Swan, Xhelan Sylve, Jashanpreet Tatla, Izzie Torres, Elliot Vader, Ronnie VanderVeen Ailis Waddill, Gloria Whang, Isabella White, Sherman White, and Kaeden Wile—for leading RAHS’ FRC robotics team, best of luck on a new season!

Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area.  Please do not make U-turns here, but turn around at the west end of the building.  Our student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school.  Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.

Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk.  If a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot.  Thank you parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.

Our Success Dean, Mr. Nick Anderson provides services for students.  He will be tutoring freshmen on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM and sophomores, juniors and seniors on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM.  The sessions will be held in Mr. Hoehne’s classroom, 3510.
