The Principal’s Message
According to a 2015 Teal aerospace analyst’s report, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) continue as the most dynamic growth sector in the world’s aerospace industry. The upward trajectory is expected for the next decade across all commercial, military, and hobbyist sectors.

The interest in UAVs carries implications for RAHS, and I am excited to announce the next step for our Unmanned Aerial System Team.  Last week, team members, Josh Markovich,
Quinn Edgington, Romi Almeda, Steven Do, and Vlad Nazarov submitted their registration for the UAS4STEM challenge.  The UAS4STEM organization promotes regional and national competitions for UAS teams—think of it as an aerial robotics competition. The first challenge, a search and rescue mission, is explained in greater detail at http://www.amaflightschool.org/programs/uas4stem-search-and-rescue-challenge.   Our team is sponsored by a generous grant from the Cascade Chapter of Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, and the RAHS PTSA.  Please join me in wishing our UAS team great success as they prepare for their first competition.

This week, you will notice personnel changes resulting from an adjustment to our staffing allocation.
For several years, our community required a full-time bookkeeper and a half-time registrar, and the district recently approved the request.  Ms. Sorensen, our former registrar/ASB bookkeeper, has accepted a position with another employer, and we’re thankful for her five years of service with RAHS.  We wish her the best with her new job opportunity.  Moving forward, Ms. Sorensen’s vacancy allows us to align the registrar and bookkeeper duties to the needs of our community.

Starting today, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Debi Tranholt will become our Registrar.  Ms. Tranholt will continue to work from her second-floor office as our Career Center Assistant, and add the title of Registrar to her job responsibilities.  Temporarily, we are working without a bookkeeper, but the full-time bookkeeper position is advertised on the district website.  Later this month, I look forward to introducing you to our new bookkeeper.  Please stay tuned!

I am also excited to share that Mr. Andy Bowlin, VEX robotics coach, was approved as the assistant FRC team coach—congratulations to him!  Mr. Bowlin will begin supporting this FRC team this week, and finish the season with the VEX robotics team. Our Skunkworks robotics team attended the FRC game reveal last Saturday, and began strategizing about the robot design around the new game challenge, STRONGHOLD. The medieval-themed game looks very exciting, and I want to wish our Skunks the best of luck during the build and competition seasons.

On a final note, there are 13 school days left in the semester.  With a push toward the end, I want to encourage you to do your best and finish well.  Please speak with your teachers if need extra help, and remember our Success Dean can support you.  Visit Mr. Anderson, our Success Dean, in Mr. Hoehne’s room after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for help with English, social studies, and/or organization. You are encouraged to use this room as a quiet, less-distracting space to get homework done.

The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

John Ursino and Thomas Swanson—for serving as WA state Senate pages.
Tom Hagen and Paul Applewhite, Cascade Chapter of Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International board members—for supporting our UAS team.

PTSA—for their unmatched support of all RAHS Sports of the Mind Teams.

Science Olympiad Coaches Mr. McComb and Ms. Weeks, Abigail Quinsay, Adam Chase, Adeline Bader, Aileen Nguyen, Aivy Nguyen,  Alana Willms, An Nguyen, Andrew Jenner,Andrew Truong, Ashley Balbuena, Braeden Swanson, Brendan Good, Caden Gobat, Catie Stukel, Champagne Ryder Jr, Charlie Bourget, Colin Marvin, Conner Whitlock, Dakota Gorder, Darci Franklin,  David Johnston, Eleanor Pahl, Eric Lottsfeldt, Erik Harang, Erin Christian, Erin Davidson, Erin Magarro, Geneva Rossman, Grace Zoppi, Grace Derrer, Hailey Johnston, Hunter Whitlock, Isaac Alvarez, Isaac Shepard, Isha Singh, Jack Doughty, Jenny Mannard, Joan Marie Aoanan, Joshua Buenbrazo, Kalib Johnson, Kalika Singh, Kara de Leon,  Keir Hichens, Kory Watson, Lauren Smith, Lesley Martinez, Lucas Thomson, Lucky Singh, Lynnea Colledge, Mamesa El, Mason Florence, Matthew Garrido, Matthew Morin, Max Andrew,  Mitchell Kisner, Najma Hashi, Nakita Brusnighan, Nicholas Wilson, Noah Gottshall, Nolan Park, Olivia Tagorda, Paul Richards, Robyn McLuen, Rohan Mathew, Saado Jama, Sahil Khunt, Sara Reyes,  Sophia Gut, Sydney Brusnighan, Taylor Phelps, Thomas Swanson, Timothy Wang, Tricia Ing, Troy Leighton,  Victoria McSmith, Yasin Ali-Halane, and Zach Tallar—for leading RAHS Science Olympiad Team, and good luck at this Saturday’s Camas Invitational and best wishes for the entire season!

Mr. Gudor, Mr. McComb, Mr. Peterson, Mr. Savishinsky, and Ms. Wilson—for leading the recruiting effort and presenting the RAHS program at the four HSD middle schools.

Elliot Vader—for being a superb ambassador to the delegation from Agua Fria Union High School District, Phoenix Arizona.

Ms. Sorensen—for her faithful, five and one half years of service as a Registrar and ASB bookkeeper.

I am honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly.

Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area.  Please do not make U-turns here, but turn around at the west end of the building.  Our student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school.  Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.

Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk.  If a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot.  Thank you parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.

Our Success Dean, Mr. Nick Anderson provides services for students.  He will be tutoring freshmen on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM and sophomores, juniors and seniors on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM.  The sessions will be held in Mr. Hoehne’s classroom, 3510.

Quote of the Week

The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.
