Principal’s Message

Interviews with applicants for the Class of 2017 are still occurring, thanks to the help of many student ambassadors, staff, and parent volunteers who have helped after school and on weekends. Thank you to everyone who has (and will continue) participated in this very important process. We could not meet our timelines without your support.

Internship opportunities continue to abound! Six students just received word last week that they have been accepted for paid internships with Planetary Resources this summer.  Congratulations Teal Dowd, Sasha Friedrich, Jon Abramson, Katie McConville, Maggie Vader, and Grace Cieszkiewicz!  Kudos, too, to Thomas Adamson, Emilio Anselmo and Skye Mceowen who have been selected to participate during the 2013-2014 school year.

Hearty congratulations are also extended to Paula Cieszkiewicz who has landed a coveted internship at the University of Washington this summer, working with scientific researchers in the Sensorimotor Neural Engineering Labs. Paula’s admission to this program also comes with a $5,000 stipend. Nice job, Paula!

Lauren Crom is headed to Stanford University this summer to participate in an intensive STEM program. Congratulations, Lauren, on your selection for this prestigious program and best to you in applying for admission to Stanford next year!

All students, I encourage you to continue to check the Internship Announcements posted in the Career Center and announced in the NOTAM. An internship in a high demand STEM environment will be a life-changing experience as well as one that will make for excellent content in writing your college essays.  Some internships are open to students completing their sophomore year, so be sure to check with Ms. Burr if you see one that highly interests you.

A big, heartfelt thank you to Tamera Nason who once again organized and staffed an Aviation High School booth at the Northwest Aviation Trade Show in Puyallup on February 23-24. Mrs. Nason’s daughter, Natalie, graduated from AHS in 2008, but Tamera continues to be an active volunteer and advocate of our school. We are “signed up” already to have an AHS booth at the 2014 conference. ACE members and others, please start thinking now about helping man our booth. Lots of volunteers are needed over the two day event.

HSPE testing is scheduled for next week!  Parents, if you can donate water or snacks, please know they will be welcomed. Sophomores, please plan your schedule for next week to assure that you are well rested and ready for testing.

That’s it for this week. Let’s hope that we continue to feel the warmth of the sun as we anticipate the spring season. My best for an outstanding week of learning.  Honored to be your principal—
~Reba G.

Imagine Highline: Your Game-Changing Ideas for Our Schools (Message from the superintendent)

Have you seen Highline’s new online discussion forum website, Imagine Highline?  It’s an easy way for staff, students, families, and community members to give input on issues facing our schools.

On Imagine Highline, you can post ideas, comment on others’ ideas, and engage in discussions with fellow community members. It is a way to exchange ideas in a format that fits into our busy lives, knowing we don’t always have time or energy to attend public meetings. We will be talking about all kinds of topics over the coming months.

Our first conversation is about the new strategic plan that will guide our schools for the next three years. The core team of parents, teachers, principals, and district and community leaders building that plan are asking you to participate. They want your ideas and feedback so this will truly be the community’s plan for our schools.

The core team is looking for big ideas to drive a plan that will be a game-changer for Highline students. Imagine Highline is a place where you can share your boldest hopes for our children and our community. What experiences do you want students to have? What should our schools be like? What kind of community do you want to live in, and how can schools make our community all we want it to be?

Go to Imagine Highline and share your game-changing ideas!

·         Summer Internship:  Attached find another new and fantastic internship opportunity with Aviation Partners Boeing.  This is a full time opportunity, paying $10-$20 per hour DOE.  Also open with application deadlines in the very new future are paid internships with Raisbeck, LMI and BLR Engineering Firms.  I promote these opportunities in NOTAM, on our Career Website (www.aviationhscareers.org) and via bulletin board and signs and some students (surprise!) still are disappointed when deadlines pass and they “weren’t aware.”  If you know of students who would be interested and qualified, please share this information-all students participating in internships thus far have  come back enthused, motivated, and with a head start on their college and career dreams. THANKS for helping give students the nudge to apply on time!

·         Future engineers- there are SIX summer internship openings in the Engineering Department with the Federal Aviation Administration.  These are open to sophomores and juniors, with seniors considered.  What an opportunity!  Application deadline is March 7, 2013.

·         AEROTEC Engineering will be offering 1-2 paid, full time engineering internships next summer.  Aerotec is located in South Seattle and while targeting Seniors, they will also consider Juniors who will be pursuing an engineering degree, are top students and passionate about the field.  Deadline for application is March 15, 2013.

·         Future pilots and aviation business professionals- 2 part time, volunteer positions are now open with Clay Lacy Aviation- one of the world’s premier aircraft charter and management companies.  Sophomores and juniors may apply; application deadline is March 15, 2013.

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.

·         New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is a change from previous practice.  We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

·         REMINDER for Families Scheduling Summer Vacations--Be prepared for your AHS student to attend school on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The first two days of school prepare your student for a great start to a new school year!

Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology.  The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering.  In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers.  During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty.  They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer.  Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities.  Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from UW admissions counselors.

Sophomores:  HSPE is March 12-14.  Please be at school rested, fed, and ready to test at 9 AM!  Your advisors will let you know the room assignments on Wednesday.

Upcoming college visits:
Oregon Tech will be presenting at 1 PM on Thursday, March 14.  Sign up in room 11 if you are interested in attending!
