Principal’s Message

The “Announcements” section of this week’s NOTAM includes many congratulatory messages to students for various accomplishments.  We are proud of all of the students mentioned, and I’m bringing special attention to one who has gained national recognition—Austin McHenry, who has just been named the 2013 National Ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for their Money Matters program! The Money Matters program is a financial literacy program for teen members, operated in collaboration with the Charles Schwab Foundation. Austin was selected form several hundred applicants across the country. Along with this honor, he will receive a $5,000 college scholarship and the Renton/Skyway Club will receive a matching grant. Austin will serve in this position for one year.  Part of his duties include traveling to various events, the first of which is being held this week in Washington D.C., where he will meet with members of the Washington State Congressional Delegation and will be formally introduced at the Jump$tart Coalition Annual Gala Dinner. Congratulations, Austin, on this astonishing accomplishment and for your years of volunteerism with Boys & Girls Club.  (FYI that while Austin is on the East Coast this week he is also visiting Rochester Institute of Technology, one of the post-secondary institutions he is considering for studies in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technologies.)

Last week Mr. Kelly and I had the opportunity to do another walk-through of our new school that is being constructed at the Museum of Flight.  While a rather “dusty/dirty” experience with so many workers polishing concrete, installing cabinetry and casework, sawing materials, etc. it was completely exhilarating!  There are now defined spaces on all three floors, and some rooms even have finished painting on accent walls (a lively blue) and all of their casework (filing cabinets, bookcases, and drawers) installed.  Most teaching walls are ready for installation of white boards, 65” LED tvs, and interactive display technology.  The presentation center (Boeing Commons) is going to be spectacular with a huge screen and state-of-the-art media technologies, and students are going to love the upper level to eat their lunch at café tables or large rounds where the entire area is light and bright thanks to the huge windows on both sides.  All classrooms have large windows, which will allow for more light (which research says contributes to sharper thinking!); some on the third floor even have skylights!  On the outside, our parking area has been paved and the front of the school now has an overhang area that you will appreciate while waiting for the bus or pick-up by parents.  Furniture and fixtures have been finalized and orders are being submitted.  The contractors assure us that work is progressing on time and on budget so we are planning an on-time opening in late August or after Labor Day (opening day is being negotiated this year so it could be either).  It is going to be a unique and beautiful institution of learning!

A reminder to keep your donations coming to the AHS PTSA to help Jaclyn Wing with her goal of raising $25,000 to help the Museum of Flight purchase a copy of Amelia Earhart’s airplane!  Jaclyn sends her thanks to those who have already contributed!

And, last but not least, good luck to our Skunks as they travel to St. Louis this week to compete with FIRST teams from around the world in recognition of technical, business, and professional excellence!  We are so proud of you already, team, and look forward to watching you from home and cheering you on!  Go Skunks!!

May your week of learning be nothing short of amazing!  I am honored to be your principal.

~Reba G.

Internship Oppurtunities:

·         Summer Internship:  Attached find another new and fantastic internship opportunity with Aviation Partners Boeing.  This is a full time opportunity, paying $10-$20 per hour DOE.  Also open with application deadlines in the very new future are paid internships with Raisbeck, LMI and BLR Engineering Firms.  I promote these opportunities in NOTAM, on our Career Website (www.aviationhscareers.org) and via bulletin board and signs and some students (surprise!) still are disappointed when deadlines pass and they “weren’t aware.”  If you know of students who would be interested and qualified, please share this information-all students participating in internships thus far have  come back enthused, motivated, and with a head start on their college and career dreams. THANKS for helping give students the nudge to apply on time!

·         New Aviation Marketing Internship: Students interested in Aviation Marketing and Business, a new paid internship at Dynon Avionics is offered, 20-40 hours/week in Woodinville. Austin McHenry interned there last summer and although it’s a long trek- he will tell you it was definitely worth it. Juniors preferred, Sophomores and Seniors considered

Aviation Day 2013 June 1st

Registration begins March 13, 2013

Together with several business sponsors, Alaska Airlines is once again proud to host the Fifth Annual Aviation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Sea-Tac Airport – Alaska Airlines Flight Operations Building.

This event is aimed at inspiring aviation dreams in the youth of Puget Sound communities. Aviation Day 2012 will provide the opportunity for high school-aged young adults to learn firsthand about career paths in the aviation industry. Learning will be accomplished in both a classroom setting and with “hands-on” experiences.

The youth will be able to "kick the tires," see the wheel wells with mechanics and the flight deck of a Boeing 737 with line pilots. They will look into the guts of a jet engine with employees who fix them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with those who operate there. Careers as far ranging as air traffic control to airline flight attendant will be discussed throughout the day. Participants will be able to explore just how flights are planned, scheduled and executed. Training facilities will be open for them and engineers will guide them through the construction of aircraft. Several light aircraft and pilots will also be on-site to educate and inspire tomorrow's leaders to take us into the skies of the future.  For more details follow the link: www.alaskaair-aviationday.org/

Juniors: Sign up with Quest Bridge, an organization that helps students with whose families earn less than $60,000/year reach highly-selective colleges. Visit: http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/students-start-here.

From Your PTSA

We're looking for a few good people!

Your PTSA is looking for energetic chairpersons and volunteers for next year. Most committees are single events and once it's over there is no other responsibility - some are ongoing and would require more of a commitment. Officer positions will be voted on at the June General meeting.

-AUCTION - Chair needed ASAP to get ready for next November. This is one of the most important positions and needs several volunteers - possibly a co-chair to assist and work as a team

-PTSA Membership - busy at beginning of the year, tapers off after

-Fundraising - ongoing - looking for ideas!

-Web Site/Communications -  ongoing - Maintain PTSA website throughout the year and sending out weekly NOTAM emails

-Car Pool Information and coordination - busy at beginning of the year

-Staff Appreciation - ongoing

-Volunteer Coordinator - ongoing

-Move Coordinator - need someone to help coordinate the PTSA portion of the move to the new school

Single events (Small amount of time)

-Seafair/Freshman Event

-Back to school event (picnic/potluck)

-Ice Cream Social (end of year)

-Senior Grad Party - large event for seniors. Planning should start at beginning of school year. Senior parent to work with ASB.

PTSA Officer Positions: co-positions also for all but the treasurer (cashier). If anyone is interested as a co-officer this would help with transitions from year to year. An officer is only allowed to hold a position for 2 years. So if we can get second officers for next year then we can start a rotation and maintain our objectives as one moves off another will continue.

PTSA President / Co-President

Vice President / Co-Vice President

Secretary / Co-Secretary

Treasurer / Cashier
Please contact a nominating committee member by May 1:
Sandy Nielsen / Keiko Sano if you are interested in any of the above chairperson, volunteer or PTSA officer positions.
If you need information about what the position entails please contact
Nancy Wing

AFTER GRADUATION, WILL YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR SENIOR IS?
You will...because every senior should be at iFly for their Class of 2013 Graduation Party from 11:30pm to 5am! There is no better way for the Class of 2013 to celebrate four years of togetherness coming to a *sniff* end...! Print out the Grad Party Form, attach $125 payment and turn into the AHS office or to Mindy McClean directly during the Thursday lunch hour. Need a hand paying? No problem...we want every senior to attend, and will work hard to do so. We have already sold several tickets...don't let your senior be left out because this party will not only be the Class of 2013's last hurrah together, but it will be a LOT OF FUN! Quote of the Week is being replaced this week by a history lesson, courtesy of Mr. Hoehne who sent the following message to all AHS staff on Thursday, April 18:

“This week at Fort Walton Beach, Florida, the four surviving Doolittle Raiders will gather for what has been advertised as the last Raider Reunion.  If ever the term “bittersweet” was appropriate it must be there as those men recall a time and place we can only imagine.  Remarkably, having achieved what they did before the transistor, they have a webpage—www.doolittleraider.com—and you can learn more about each of the 80 who risked their lives to bring a turn in the fortunes of war.  Short of that, perhaps give pause this morning, as it was 71years ago today they launched from the pitching deck of the USS Hornet in 16 B-25B bombers.  Three of the Raiders would lose their lives bailing out over China, and three more were later executed.  Eight were taken prisoner.  One, Lt. Thomas White, volunteered to serve as a gunner and offer his services as a medical doctor.  He would amputate the leg of Lt. Ted Lawson as a life saving measure while giving the injured pilot a blood transfusion from his own arm.  They both survived and the pilot later wrote the book Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.  What would you do for your country?”  (Thank you, Airman Hoehne for your service to our country and being our resident historian, who reminds us often of what many of us never knew or have long forgotten from our own history lessons.)
