Principal’s Message

Welcome back from what I hope was a great spring break!  Hopefully, some of you found sunshine and warmth if your vacation included travel.

Congratulations are in order to the following people this week:

·         Krysten Walker, who has been admitted to her top college of choice, Stanford University! Krysten plans to major in Chemistry and has plans for post-graduate studies in law.

·         Nick Tucker and Nicholas Johnson on their 2nd place overall win at the Science Fair the weekend of April 6.  They also won a special achievement award in the Energy category.  Kudos to both of you on this spectacular accomplishment!

·         Our amazing Skunkworks Robotics team for making history and creating a new legacy of winning their third consecutive first place win in regional competition!  Their victory occurred in Spokane where a large audience of fans bit their nails and watched nervously as the very last match was played in which the robot performed beautifully and every team member worked in sync to experience this outstanding accomplishment.  A very tired but happy team returned to Seattle, bringing home another trophy and banner and eagerly looking forward to international competition in St. Louis during the last week of this month.  Skunks, we are immensely proud of you and will be cheering from our computers as you vie for another win in St. Louis!

·         Our mighty Science Olympiad team, who also made their way to Eastern Washington over the break to compete in State Competition!   Our Elite Science Olympiad students ended their Spring Break with strength and pride at the State Science Olympiad competition at Clark College in Vancouver, WA.  Saturday provided our students the opportunity to put a year’s worth of effort in competition with some of the best builders and scholars in Washington’s high schools. When the results were in and the awards were announced, we learned that our team placed 11th overall in a very tight field.

The following students received recognition for their efforts:

Caitlin Schaefer and Andrea Wooley finished 5th in Astronomy and 2nd in Remote Sensing

Taite Stewart and Manuel Brambila-Diaz finished 4th in Write It / Do It

Sasha Friedrich and Jonah Graves finished 3rd in Green Generation

Allen May and Kishan Vekaria finished 4th in Elastic Launch Glider

Jessica Mannard and Dustin Werran finished 4th in Thermodynamics

·         105 freshmen from approximately 22 different school districts who received letters of invitation to be part of Raisbeck Aviation High School’s Class of 2017!  With 346 applicants who applied for admission, selection of the class was complex, challenging, and emotional.  I so wish we had seats for more students who truly would love to experience the culture of our school.  It is gratifying to know, however, that so many students and families want a rigorous and relevant educational program and are willing to make huge sacrifices if offered the opportunity.  My congratulations and thanks to all of you who are currently in our learning community—YOU are the ones who make the school shine for the next generation of students to follow you.

In the last edition of the NOTAM, I wrote about Jaclyn Wing’s project to help bring a copy of the Lockheed Electra aircraft that Amelia flew, to the Museum of Flight.  Jaclyn was thrilled to learn that a few families donated almost immediately through the PTSA, which is a 501C-3. Checks can be mailed to Aviation High School PTSA, P.O. Box 98521; or a donation can be made through the PTSA website http://www.aviationptsa.org/  Jaclyn’s goal is $25,000, which will be matched by a Museum of Flight trustee.  Please spread the word to all you know so that more young women will be inspired to follow STEM pathways.

That’s it for this week, good people.  Enjoy your week of learning while you keep in mind that you are now working toward the finale of the school year!  Make every minute count.  As always, I am honored to be your principal.

~Reba G.

·         Summer Internship:  Attached find another new and fantastic internship opportunity with Aviation Partners Boeing.  This is a full time opportunity, paying $10-$20 per hour DOE.  Also open with application deadlines in the very new future are paid internships with Raisbeck, LMI and BLR Engineering Firms.  I promote these opportunities in NOTAM, on our Career Website (www.aviationhscareers.org) and via bulletin board and signs and some students (surprise!) still are disappointed when deadlines pass and they “weren’t aware.”  If you know of students who would be interested and qualified, please share this information-all students participating in internships thus far have  come back enthused, motivated, and with a head start on their college and career dreams. THANKS for helping give students the nudge to apply on time!

·         New Aviation Marketing Internship: Students interested in Aviation Marketing and Business, a new paid internship at Dynon Avionics is offered, 20-40 hours/week in Woodinville. Austin McHenry interned there last summer and although it’s a long trek- he will tell you it was definitely worth it. Juniors preferred, Sophomores and Seniors considered

Price per person runs about $200 each. We are pleased to be able to offer discounted tickets at $125 at this point. ATTENDANCE NOTES

·         Attendance Reminder for Parents and Students:   Attendance line 206-878-1259

A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.

·         New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is a change from previous practice.  We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

·         REMINDER for Families Scheduling Summer Vacations--Be prepared for your AHS student to attend school on Thursday, August 29, 2013. The first two days of school prepare your student for a great start to a new school year!

·         Student Athletes— please remember to check in weekly with your advisor and notify them of your participation status.  All winter athletes who did not participate in a fall sport must pick up their ALE paperwork this week from Mr. Kelly.

From Your PTSA

We're looking for a few good people!

Your PTSA is looking for energetic chairpersons and volunteers for next year. Most committees are single events and once it's over there is no other responsibility - some are ongoing and would require more of a commitment.

Can you help to Sponsor a Senior? Fundraiser for the Class of 2013 Graduation Party--
As June approaches, our seniors look toward the end of their high school years at AHS. Capping off a busy day, the Seniors will gather one last time to celebrate four years well done as a class at their Grad Party...the final gathering until they meet again in 2023 for their ten year reunion! Held once again at iFly, this celebration is a safe way for our seniors to cut loose after what is bound to be an emotional day, and has become a welcome tradition at Aviation High School.
But, it sure is an expensive tradition! At a cost of approximately $200 a student, we look for ways to defray the ticket cost for each to attend. Can you help? The Grad Party Committee is asking for donations of any denomination to help "SPONSOR A SENIOR". Whether it is $25 or $250, any amount adds up, and is greatly appreciated. We have several students on scholarship, and are selling tickets for $125 to make it more affordable to attend. So...whatever your student's grade, from freshman to senior, think about making a donation! All checks should be made payable to "AHS PTSA" with "Grad Party" in the memo line. Questions, comments, concerns? Contact Mindy McClean at
mindymacster@hotmail.com or 206.679.8692.

AFTER GRADUATION, WILL YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR SENIOR IS?
You will...because every senior should be at iFly for their Class of 2013 Graduation Party from 11:30pm to 5am! There is no better way for the Class of 2013 to celebrate four years of togetherness coming to a *sniff* end...! Print out the Grad Party Form, attach $125 payment and turn into the AHS office or to Mindy McClean directly during the Thursday lunch hour. Need a hand paying? No problem...we want every senior to attend, and will work hard to do so. We have already sold several tickets...don't let your senior be left out because this party will not only be the Class of 2013's last hurrah together, but it will be a LOT OF FUN! Contact Mindy McClean at mindymacster@hotmail.com for any questions.
