Principal’s Message

The T.A. Wilson Great Gallery at The Museum of Flight was the place to be on Saturday evening. From the start of the silent auction at 6:00 p.m. to the close of the live auction at 10:00 p.m., our community poured out lavish support for Raisbeck Aviation High School’s unrivaled programs and student scholars.

Mr. Scott McComb served as the Master of Ceremonies extraordinaire and teamed up with experienced KOMO newscaster and our evening’s auctioneer, Brad Goode.  With tremendous skill and showmanship, Brad spurred us on to bid competitively for our sports-of-the-mind teams, career readiness program, and instructional technology needs.  Indeed, the McComb-Goode duo kept the orbit of the live auction animated and entertaining.

I want to acknowledge the year-long effort of our phenomenal auction co-chairs Emily Thatcher, Martha Ortiz and Cathy Coyle-Toone. This dynamic trio of women, along with the incredible network of miracle workers, a.k.a., RAHS parents, are the driving force behind the auction’s success.  Collectively, their heroic efforts and superb planning made everything sparkle and turn to gold. Thank you!

My gratitude is also extended to key sponsors, The Museum of Flight, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Scott and Linda Carson, ALPA-Airline Pilots Association, Alaska Airlines, Galvin Flying Services, AeroTEC, Aviation Partners Boeing, Delta Airlines, TECT Aerospace, Boeing 767 Finance, Wallingford Financial and College Planning, Bralco Metals, Sandy and Cliff Shettler, and Taylor and Doug Evans. Thank you, too, to students who assisted at the auction and to both students and staff who contributed items. To everyone who contributed to the success of the 2014 auction—you are amazing!  I am honored and humbled by our community’s generosity.

Our school community enjoyed another great moment earlier in the week at the Student of the Quarter assembly. Congratulations are in order to seniors, Olivia Shiffer and Jarid Bennett, who were selected as Rolls Royce Scholarship recipients for the Class of 2015. Olivia and Jarid each collected $5,000 to use toward the pursuit of an engineering degree at their post-secondary institution of choice. At the assembly, Olivia and Jarid were presented with oversized cardboard checks by Paul Belshaw, Rolls Royce Senior VP-Boeing and his team.

Last week, the Highline School District announced a final decision regarding the Senior Project.  As a capstone experience for previous senior classes, the Senior Project is a graduation requirement for the class of 2015.  This announcement honors the work of our dedicated staff and students as we have pressed forward as planned with the senior project process. Our seniors began developing their project proposals as part of their junior-year advisory classes.

It is important to remember that the purpose of the senior project is to provide students with an authentic self-directed intellectual pursuit aligned to their career interest.  At RAHS, the design of the project must include a STEM component.  As the student consults with his/her project mentor, logs the required hours, and prepares for the public defense of the project, the measure of success comes down to the student’s personal learning stretch. Additionally, our seniors who receive a commendation for their exemplary projects are eligible for another pot of PTSA scholarship money. These showcase projects are also shared with the general public at the Museum of Flight.

Please know that within WA state statute, school districts must also meet the minimum state requirements for high school graduation set by the State Board of Education. It is entirely within school district authority to prescribe additional requirements for graduation that exceed the requirements set by the state—and many do.  This means that individual districts may make a decision to continue the culminating project as a local graduation requirement.  Preliminary data collected by the State Board of Education indicates that over 60% of high school districts in Washington have chosen to retain it as a requirement for the class of 2015.  Highline is among districts that have chosen to retain it, at least for now.

For parents who wish to discuss the Senior Project as a graduation requirement for the class of 2015, please know that I am available to listen and answer your questions.  With the level of interest surrounding the requirement and final decision, I am scheduling a meeting for this Wednesday, November 12th from 6:00-7:00PM in the PLC, room 3510.

U-Turns in front of the school—over the last few weeks, I’ve observed and learned about a number of close calls involving cars making U-turns in front of the school.  As a courtesy to our student drivers and other parents, please follow the directional signs in the parking area. The safest place to turn around is to follow the directional arrows at the west end of the building.  Drivers, please avoid making a U-turn in between the speed bumps.  Thank you for your cooperation and support to keep us all safe.

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

PTSA—your generosity is unmatched.  Thank you for turning our students’ dreams for college and career into reality.
