Principal’s Message
Like a
banner unfurled to announce exceptional news, I am thrilled to report on the
accreditation team’s recommendation for RAHS. The lead evaluator for AdvancEd,
Bob Britton, who spoke last Thursday on behalf of the external review team
stated, “Our team enthusiastically recommends RAHS for accreditation!” Collectively,
we can pat ourselves on the back. The review
team cited an impressive list of commendations for RAHS that gives us another
reason to celebrate just a little bit more.
Commendations
for RAHS:
·
Teacher
Passion
·
Mentor
Program
·
Strong
Vision
·
Internships
·
Project
Based Learning
·
Student
Strength and Need Team
·
Distributed
Leadership
·
High
Expectations
·
Instructional
Leadership
·
Wow—not
a commendation, but the review team noted “Wow” as an honorable mention in the
presentation given to staff last Thursday.
Our
entire staff deserves praise for the commendations. RAHS
is an amazing place to learn because our extraordinary staff makes it happen.
I want to acknowledge Ms. Nurzhanov
for spearheading our accreditation planning and work. The external review team tipped their hat to her
organizational skill, persistent communication, and attention to detail. Great
job!
This week, we host Student Led Conferences, an important and graded component of our
advisory curriculum. Students, I encourage you to monitor your goals to ensure
that you are well prepared for college and eventually, the career of your
dreams. Thank you, students and parents, for making the conferences a
priority. Parents please sign in with
your student’s advisor. The sign-in sheets are located in each teacher’s classroom.
Senior
Project—recently, the Highline School District made a
final decision to retain the senior project as a graduation requirement. Given the circumstances surrounding the
decision and the outdated documentation on our website, RAHS will reduce the
number of required hours for the senior project to total of thirty. Our senior
class advisor teachers have repeatedly reinforced the expectation for 40 hours
throughout the process. For the class of 2015, all of the other elements for
the RAHS senior project remain intact. The change to show a 30-hour requirement
as well as the updated Senior Project documentation can be found at—http://www.highlineschools.org/domain/623
From the Frequently Asked Questions section of the
RAHS Senior Project documentation...
Question: When
can I start working on my project?
Answer:
Exploratory work can be done
throughout high school, but project approval will not be granted until the
spring semester of your junior year. The
30 hours cannot be counted toward
the project until the start date of your senior year.
Question:
Do students have to complete all FOUR of the components satisfactorily
including
the
Culminating Presentation, to pass the project requirement?
Answer:
Yes. The Proposal-including the front signature page, all Culminating Presentation Materials, the
Presentation, and the Reflection Paper.
A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a
better place.
Irene Balbuena cooked a delicious
meatballs/sausage spaghetti and she served it in real plates with napkins and Edith Dizon brought salad, garlic
bread and a chocolate cake for the accreditation team.
Michele Almeda, Anab Abdullahi, Steve Burke, John M. Fluke Jr, Barbara French,
Bill Leaming, Susan Huntington, Carol
Morrison,
Leslie Schumann,
Debi Tranholt, and Nancy Wing—parents who provided input to the accreditation team. We know many other parents wanted to come after 5pm, but the accreditation team’s two-day schedule was completely booked. Parents, I deeply appreciate your willingness to help and enthusiasm for RAHS!
Peter Morton and Erik Shutten, met with accreditation team on
Nov. 20.
Senior Power!—during Friday’s lunch period, an
energized group of seniors delivered 815 non-perishable food items to win the
food drive. Kudos for the terrific planning,
coordination, and action.
May you all enjoy a blessed
Thanksgiving and time with family and friends.
Honored
to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Scholar Athletes in Swimming:
Coach Rachel Loy, Head Swim Coach of
Highline, Evergreen and Tyee, would like to recognize the following students in
regards to the sport of swimming.
Nicole Diaz -
Although new to swimming, worked hard to learn the strokes and swam for Tyee,
scoring points at the Varsity level.
Carolyn Ta - Also, a
new swimmer for Tyee, swam at the Varsity level and just missed qualifying for
Districts in the 100 Breaststroke by less than a second. She also was
recognized recently at Tyee for the Robin Hoof Most Inspirational award. Not
bad for a freshman!
Helena Cassam
- Also, a freshman, swam for Highline at the Varsity level and helped three
relays qualify for Districts! Unfortunately, Helena was sick the day of
Districts and could not compete leaving her coach wondering if their relays
could have made State. We missed it by 2 seconds. Next year, Helena!
Sophia Cassam
- Senior and Highline team captain, came in 1st place in all of her 11 dive
competitions, placed 1st at League, 2nd at Districts and 2nd at State! She was
honored 1st team in Dive and also 2nd team in Swim. She also helped two relay
teams make it into the Finals at Districts and just missed qualifying in the 50
free by less than a tenth of a second. Sophia has placed at State in dive for
the past three years. Sophia's coaches are really going to miss her great
attitude, kind nature, and incredible talent and wish her much luck in college.
Emma Murray - Senior
and Team Captain for Evergreen, despite swimming with an injury, placed 3rd in
the 500 freestyle and 2nd in the 100 breaststroke at League. She also made 2nd
Team for All League. At Districts, she placed 7th in the 500 freestyle,
dropping a record 13 seconds to qualify for State. Emma made it into the Finals
at State but had a swim cap malfunction, almost getting disqualified. However,
she still managed to secure a spot as the 16th fastest 500 swimmer in
Washington. Emma has been the team captain for the past three years and has
been an invaluable help to her teammates and coaches which is why she is being
recognized for the Robin Hoof Inspirational award for Evergreen. Her coach
considers her a friend and wishes her much luck at college as well.
Coach Loy would like to thank
Raisbeck Aviation High School for these wonderful athletes who represented
their resident schools with high honors!
In
the 4A STATE Meet, Erin Roland
and Kristen Lemley’s 200 Medley
and 400 Free Relays made the Consolation Finals. Kristen placed 4th in the 100 Back and 8th
in the 200 I.M. in the “Championship Finals”. They swam for the Mt.
Rainier Rams.

FROM
THE CAREER CENTER
MENTORS/MENTEES –The
second mentor breakfast of the 2014-15 school year will take place on Wednesday, December 3 at 7:30AM. We’re pleased to present perspectives on
mentorship and how the program has been a “key” in:
·
Forming
professional relationships,
·
Cultivating
understandings and perspectives on aviation, academics and professional growth.
Mentors
have received notification of needed district paperwork in order to be
“matched” with sophomore mentees. As that paperwork is returned, the
remaining sophomore students will be matched with prospective mentees.
Relationships are cultivated through five annual breakfast meetings held
throughout the academic at RAHS and subsequent meetings arranged directly with
mentors either at school or in the mentor’s place of business. Programs
include presentations from area businesses and professional concerns.
Attendance averages 175-200 and just under 68% of the RAHS student population
is actively engaged in at least one professional mentor/mentee relationship.
INTERNSHIPS -- Academic
credit is received for internship efforts:
·
½
credit hours for 180 hours worked
·
1.0
credit hours for 360 hours worked.
On average,
58% of internships are paid in addition to credit rendered. Over 170
students participated in internships in 2013-14 including: 12 seniors, 66
juniors, 54 sophomores and 18 freshmen. Watch the NOTAM for details as
they become available. A number of summer interns have still not
completed the required REFLECTIONS paper and document submissions.
Academic credit cannot be issued without completion of required paperwork.
Contact
Mr. Davolt @ steven.davolt@highlineschools.org. for further information and
your chance to participate.
ALL
STUDENTS
--- Are you currently involved in an internship this semester? In
order to receive academic credit for your efforts ---paperwork is needed to be
filed with district personnel. If your internship is a continuing process
from either the summer 2014 or earlier ---be sure and let the CAREER CENTER
know of your collective hours. For academic credit on your permanent
transcript; .5 credit will be awarded for 180 hours and 1.0 credit (maximum)
will be awarded for a total of 360 hours. Credits are issued on semester
grade report only.
MENTORS/MENTEES –The second breakfast of the
2014-15 school year will take place on Wednesday, December 3 at
7:30AM. Roughly half of the sophomore class has been paired with their
new prospective mentors and the December breakfast will be a chance to “meet
and greet”. This month, we’re pleased to present perspectives on
mentorship and how the program has been the “key” in forming new relationships,
new understandings and new perspectives on aviation, academics and professional
growth --- for both mentors as well as mentees. Mentors have received
notification of needed district paperwork in order to be “matched” with
sophomore mentees. As that paperwork is returned, the remaining sophomore
students will be matched with prospective mentees.
Contact
Mr. Davolt @ steven.davolt@highlineschools.org. for further information and
your chance to participate.
