Principal’s Message

As I visited with students this week, they all agreed that the first quarter of school quickly passed by. Throughout the first quarter, I appreciated the daily high-fives given at the front door and the commitment shown by our teachers, support staff, and students.  Gold stars for everyone!  We’ve enjoyed a wonderful start to the school year and capped it off a record turnout for Saturday’s Aviator’s Ball.  Wow, over 250 students in attendance!  A special thank you is in order to Landmark Aviation (formerly Galvin Flying Services) and our chaperones who help make the dance a reality: Ms. Branch, Ms. Carper, Ms. Dyer, Ms. Fitzpatrick, Ms. Gronenthal, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Hiranaka, Ms. Jones-Gunn, Mr. Minor, Mr. Peterson, Ms. Nurzhanov, and Ms. Weeks.

The start of the second quarter is the perfect time to reflect on your progress and refine your academic goals. Quarterly grades are a progress indicator. The semester grades remain on your transcript and count toward meeting graduation requirements. As you develop your college-going resume, your grades represent one important element of a competitive college application.  It is very important to contact your teachers when you start to struggle or fall behind. Self-advocacy is a skill to develop. By directly contacting your amazing teachers, you will find they provide the best support when you let them know your specific needs. Today, connect with your teachers in person or by email—it is the first step to improve your learning.

Seniors, as we turn the corner into the second quarter, many of you are already thinking about graduation. Please make a note that the last day of school is Tuesday, June 9 and the graduation date is set for Saturday, June 13 at 1:00PM.  Cancellation of school due to weather or other emergencies do not affect these dates.  I know you are very busy preparing your college applications, requesting letter or recommendations, and wondering about the status of the Senior Project.  The Highline School District leadership is scheduled to communicate a final decision about the Senior Project this week.  For the class of 2015, my understanding is the district will require the Senior Project for graduation.

Congratulations to seniors Erin Ronald and Kristen Lemley who helped their Mt. Rainier Rams swim to a magnificent 3rd place finish at the League Swim Meet at Rogers Pool last Saturday.  Their 200 Medley (Kristen swam the butterfly and Erin swam the freestyle) relay won!  Kristen won the 100 backstroke and placed 3rd in the 100 butterfly.  Great job lady swimmers!

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Owen Mattson spoke to an audience of educators at the EdSurge technology conference last week in Seattle and answered questions about technology in classrooms. He was the only high school student on the panel.

Garnet Swan superb support for resolving technology issues at the ten-year anniversary assembly.

ASB Leaders and Spirit Squad Members for a fabulous and exciting Spirit Week Assembly.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Interested in helping with Information Night?  On Thursday, November 13 and December 4 there are several ways to get involved and earn community service hours.  Starting on Wednesday, you can sign up on one of the clipboards placed at the Flight Attendant Desk.  Students, your help is needed to reach out to your middle school and personally invite prospective students to one of the events.

Laptop Insurance

After a comprehensive review of filed claims, inherent protection with the device, and the company’s pricy premium, the district will not offer insurance through Worth Ave Group or any other vendor this year. The laptops are coverage for loss by theft with the installed CompuTrace software.

If families wish to insure the device, we are directing them to contact their insurance company. Because the district owns the device, you may not be able to add the laptop to your homeowner policy. Homeowner policies vary, so please check your policy restrictions or consult with your agent for details.  We will continue to monitor laptop repairs and reassess the need for insurance for the following school year.

Science has not yet mastered prophecy. We predict too much for the next year and yet far too little for the next ten.
