Principal’s Message
The season and spirit of giving and receiving are fully
alive with RAHS. Last Monday, I received a
phone call from Ken Hastings, lead of Corporate Development (M&A
and Strategic Planning) and Investor Relations for the PACCAR Foundation. Ken explained the
PACCAR foundation approved a grant for RAHS in the amount of $146,000 to
purchase a Fortus 400mc 3D printer. “The Fortus 400mc is a user-configurable
high-performance workhorse, ideal for creating functional prototypes, manufacturing
tools and end-use parts to match any mechanical, thermal, aesthetic and
resolution needs.” This new technology enhances our Project
Based Learning environment and furthers our mission to inspire and prepare
students to follow a STEM education and career pathway. I am thrilled for our community! The PACCAR Foundation’s generous contribution
is a rocket-assisted boost to help us maintain our orbit as a statewide leader
in STEM education.
A few
weeks ago, several families brought their concerns to me about the decision to
maintain the senior project as a graduation requirement. I appreciated their sincerity and list of
constructive alternatives to satisfy the requirement. Sensibly, our STEM culture and partnerships
with the aviation and aerospace industry offer just such an option— as suggested
by the parent group. For clarity, an
alternative route is officially identified and approved and will be known as the
Internship Option. The Internship Option becomes effective immediately and our
Career Readiness Center is working to verify the names of eligible students. By December 19, students will be notified in
writing if they have met or are on track to meet the first four of the
following Internship Option requirements:
The
student:
- Applied for an internship through the RAHS Career Readiness Center (proposal requirement satisfied)
- Secured an internship advertised through the RAHS Career Readiness Center (mentor contact satisfied through an internship supervisor)
- Satisfactorily completed at least 30 hours of internship experience (hours requirement met)
- Completed the internship between May 1, 2014 and April 1, 2015 (senior year requirement)
- Write a description of at least one project that was completed during the internship. The description must include the number of hours spent on the project and what was accomplished (written documentation satisfied)
- Compose a reflection on what was learned both personally and about the industry sponsoring the internship experience (written documentation satisfied)
- Prepare a presentation, similar to the senior project presentation, to summarize the experience (presentation component satisfied)
For any
student who did not secure an internship through the RAHS Career Readiness
Center, they are expected to move forward with their original senior project
proposal. All students will present their projects or the internship experience
as scheduled on April 15 or 16, 2015. In
previous years, projects displaying exceptionally high quality work were
nominated for the Senior Showcase. These
students became eligible for the PTSA scholarship money—that practice
continues. However, students who complete the senior project requirement via
the Internship Option are not eligible for PTSA scholarship money.
Thank
you for your suggestions, support, and patience throughout the process. The Senior Project advisors will clarify
students’ questions during this week’s advisory periods.
A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a
better place.
Irene
Balbuena, Edith Dizon, Van Tran, and Shirley Buenbrazo—amazing volunteers who brought the
delicious meal to feed the entire staff on Information Night. Thank you for
taking great care of us!
The
195 RAHS Student Ambassadors who
stayed late to support Information Night—a new record for student
participation!
Harrison Jerome, Isabella Torres,
Jordan Fletcher, Isha Singh, Ashley Balbuena, Quinn Edington, Maryam Shafa,
Senay Emmanuel, Carlos Navarro, Sophia Cassam, and Emilo Anselmo—exemplary ambassadors who served
on the student panel during Information Night.
John Fluke Jr.—wingman extraordinaire and PACCAR Foundation
board member.
Honored
to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

National Honor Society
NHS MEETING 8 DECEMBER. Come hither my young friends, for the day
of 8 December we meet, meet at last! The capacity of thyne cardiac muscles is
lacking the ability to contain such feelings of joyous wonder. In the divine
words of those gods greater than myself, "Tis the season to be
jolly!" So fa la la la la and get your butt to Sr. Peterson's room after
school on Monday.
Congratulations to the senior class and their slightly scary yet
winning mountain of cans! In order from the worst of you lot to the best (the
very best I might add), Sophomores with 224, Juniors with 286, Freshmen with
316, and Seniors with 872. Good work guys! You raised 1700 donations in total!
How's the dust taste sophomores, juniors, and freshmen? Either get used to
being in the seniors' tracks or get a move on with that spirit!
CHRISTMAS CAROLING IS HAPPENING ON 12 DECEMBER 2014 AT NORMANDY
PARK ASSISTED LIVING. Do you want to watch the glory that is Sr. Peterson
singing? While helping the elderly at the same time?! Yes, you do! See the NHS
Board across the hall from Mrs. Cook's room for the signup sheet! Carpools are
available!
LOVE YOU GUYS,
NHS
*****************************
Parents, students must not stay
at school after 6 PM
unless they are directly supervised and participating in a school event/club or
extracurricular activity. This is to ensure student safety and adult
supervision while on the school campus.
If you
are unable to pick your child up before 6 PM on a regular school day, please
arrange a carpool (connect with the PTSA) or make other arrangements for
transportation. For liability reasons, your child must be supervised or
find a way home by 6PM. Thank
you!
REMINDER
Many
students are failing to meet the dress code requirements this year, and it's
becoming a larger issue than ever before. Please review the guidelines for
appropriate attire and remind your peers so we can keep our attention on our
education and not have to introduce stricter punishment policies for being out
of dress code.

Quote of the Week— contributed by Maren Gibson, RAHS
sophomore.
Few
people who know of the work of Langley, Lilienthal, Pilcher, Maxim and Chanute
but will be inclined to believe that long before the year 2000 A.D., and very
probably before 1950, a successful aeroplane will have soared and come home
safe and sound.
