Principal’s Message
Congratulations
to Deanta Kelly, Gordon Salemann, and
Nate Williams who were recognized as Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Program. Commended Students are named for exceptional
academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the
qualifying test. Of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test last October, Deanta,
Gordon, and Nate scored in the
top 3.3% of all test takers. Well done scholars! With the applause ringing in our ears for our
three Commended Students, it is a perfect opportunity to remind all sophomores
and juniors that this year’s PSAT is scheduled for October 15th. Students, the PSAT is administered during school
hours and we’ll observe a modified schedule for that day. I wish you
the best as you compete for the National Merit Scholarship Awards and
recognition.
More
congratulations are in order for the Girls Gen leaders. These following
girls supported the driver training sessions over the last two weeks: Driver—Maryam
Shafa, Operator—Sydney Gardner, and
Co-Human Players—Maya Warnes, and Melissa Will. The Girls Gen team competes Saturday, October 18th
at Tahoma
Junior High. There are more
details found later in the NOTAM.
As I look at the calendar, this Friday marks the
completion of the first month of school.
Since the start of the school year, I’ve been deeply impressed with the
students’ energy, enthusiasm, and friendliness. We’re off to a terrific start! Thank you to everyone—students, staff,
families, and our community stakeholders for making the first month at RAHS a
wonderful place to be.

Students to Take the Healthy Youth
Survey
Students
in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 will participate in the 2014 Healthy Youth Survey
during the week of October 13-17. This survey is voluntary and anonymous.
Survey results are used to support our youth and reduce their risks.
Parents can excuse their children from taking the survey
by calling the school. Students can also excuse themselves by talking to their
teacher. Schools, school districts, counties, and state agencies use the
results to better understand our students and to provide them with the services
they need. Results are used for planning, evaluating, and improving programs
and obtaining money to support them. For more information regarding this

Δv SPACEFEST: ACCELERATING DISCOVERY -- Make your plans to attend the
Museum of Flight’s celebratory event on November 20-22 where the leaders
of space and industry will come together in an incredible three day program of
presentations, demonstrations and activities. Participating RAHS students and
their parents will be given complimentary admission to the three-day program.

FOR THE JOE SUTTER GALA
--- We’re looking for a group of musicians (10-15) for a paid engagement at the
MUSEUM OF FLIGHT on Saturday, November 15. Music will be a
crowning highlight of the annual dinner celebrating Mr. Sutter and his
contribution to aviation and the aeronautical industry. For his assistance in
the development of commercial jet aircraft, Mr. Sutter was awarded the United
States Medal of Technology in 1985. Mr. Sutter is scheduled to attend

received the follow letter regarding a student who served this summer in the
RAHS internship program. What an opportunity for students to gain
work-life skills in preparation for future experience.

(His) technical skills were tested during his internship, and he was able to
get all assignments completed in a timely manner, demonstrating the ability to
learn new concepts and apply them while having to meet a deadline.
His attention to detail far surpassed what I would expect any intern to
do. He worked alongside me as if he had just as much invested as I
did. To say he was accurate and thorough is an understatement.
(He) had a strong ability to look at the big picture when needed as well as the
at-hand task on his plate. I did not have to worry when I gave him an
assignment.
His appearance was professional and met our standards.
I held him accountable for every task and assignment he was given and he did
not let me down. He was always on time and showed up early the majority
of the time. He was nothing short of completely dependable.
I believe that he was able to get the most out of the internship as he could,
and he certainly aimed to do so.
I am very glad I was able to work with (student) for his summer internship and
he is a fine asset and recognizes his abilities….

It's
that time of year ladies and gentleman, and with the falling leaves and chilly
autumn weather comes our annual AVIATORS BALL! This
year’s Ball is just a month away, and that means
the Aviators Court Nominations are NEXT WEEK! Be on the lookout for the
Nomination Box on the first floor by the Flight Attendant’s desk
from October 6th to the 10th, and cast your vote
for your class’s girl and guy nominees for this year’s king and
queen, and their court! There will be 4 strapping gentleman as well as 4 lovely
lady nominees per grade, so during lunch, before, or after school, make sure to
nominate!
Not
only does fall mean it's time for our most formal all-school dance, but it's
the perfect time to stock up on all our spirit attire, including our BRAND NEW
sweater designs and first ever BEANIES! Check out the spirit shack in the
lunchroom corner this Friday for deals on items both new and classic.
Club
sign-ups are happening this Thursday for FRESHMEN and SOPHOMORES, and this
Wednesday for JUNIORS and SENIORS during advisory time. CLUB OFFICERS make sure
to sign up early on Tuesday in Mrs. Fitz's room!
But
Wednesday has more happening than just Junior and senior club sign-ups, it's
also FRESHMAN CLASS CAPTAIN ELECTIONS! Aspiring freshman class-captains for the
2014-2015 year will give speeches and be voted upon during advisory, so be sure
to be present! ASB wishes the best of luck to each candidate, and is excited to
meet our new members!
As

Thanks to everyone who came to the Girls Gen driver
training/practice sessions over the last few weeks. You’ve all learned a lot about running and maintaining the robot that will
be invaluable for Girls Gen in a couple of weeks.
Not everyone can be on drive team, but
we do have other positions that need to be filled at Girls Generation! If you
are interested in filling a scouting, safety, or pit position, please let us
know! We also hope to see plenty of the
boys and parents there to cheer us on and help out where needed! The competition will be at Tahoma Junior High
on October 18. Opening ceremonies begin
at 9am, pits open at 7:30am. Mark your
calendars now.
Everyone did a great job driving and
operating the robot. We saw incredible
improvement in confidence and cycle fluidity by the end of the last
practice. You should all be extremely
proud of yourselves. Any combination of
you would make a very competitive drive team at Girls Gen this year! This was a tough choice, but the Girls
Generation 2014 drive team for Skunk Works is as follows.

Youth and Government at RAHS
Do you
like politics? Want to learn more about government? Want to have an amazing
experience and meet great people? You should join Youth and Government! YAG is
a program run through the YMCA that aims to connect high school students to the
democratic process by engaging them in a non-partisan leadership experience. The
year long program culminates in the 4 day YMCA Youth Legislature in May at the
State Capitol in Olympia.

Gain real-world experience while conducting authentic scientific
research on a NASA mission project.
The Student Planetary Investigators (PI) program is waiting for your
participation! Student teams will have the opportunity to learn
about Mercury in new and exciting ways! Through the use of mission
software, students will have the opportunity to explore the surface of Mercury,
and possibly have their work featured on the MESSENGER (http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/) website! Through the Student PI
program, students will gain valuable experience in technical and scientific
skills as well as practice in essential soft skills such as teamwork, public
speaking, asking thoughtful questions, and research methodology.
The program is free and open to teams of students
across the country. The program is conducted via distance learning technologies
and is designed to provide maximum flexibility for student teams while they
work directly with NASA mission scientists. The Student PI Program was created
by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Space
Exploration Sector, Education and Communication office with support from NASA
mission and instrument science and engineering teams.
The Student PI Program focuses on the
MESSENGER spacecraft, currently orbiting Mercury. MESSENGER
followed a path through the inner solar system, including one flyby of Earth,
two flybys of Venus, and three flybys of Mercury. This impressive journey
yielded the first return of new spacecraft data from Mercury since the Mariner
10 mission more than 30 years ago. Student
PI participants make authentic contributions to this effort through the
analysis of image data. Students (under mentor guidance) join the science
team in analyzing real MESSENGER data, using the same software and techniques
the mission scientist would use. Students develop hypothesis and projects based
on data analysis, later presenting their work for peer and science team

YCCC (YOUTH CAPTURE THE
COLORFUL COSMOS)
The
Harvard-Smithsonian Center YCCC (Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos) is a
program designed to offer the opportunity to explore and learn about the
universe through the experience of hands-on astrophotography. The students learn how to control robotic
telescopes over the internet to gather raw data, how to manipulate that data
using astronomic image processing software and finally how to display the image
to the public with explanatory text about the object and the techniques used to
create the image.
The
goal of the YCCC program is to promote increased interest, awareness, and
knowledge of astronomy content, understanding of technology and proficiency in
real scientific research skills.
The
classes will take place after school on Fridays. Sessions will run about 90 minutes. Watch for more information in future NOTAMs.
