Principal’s Message

Last Tuesday, as the 20-member team from South Africa finished their tour of RAHS, I caught Michael Derenzo, U.S. Trade & Development Agency manager, and asked him for specific feedback about the delegation’s site visit.  Michael, who lives in Washington D.C., stated, “I never knew a school like this existed—our visit here was the best stop on the itinerary.  It was a bull’s-eye for the delegation!”

His enthusiasm was sparked by the presentations featuring our signature projects and career readiness program. Our model of using experts from the aerospace industry to work alongside a willing teacher to co-design, develop and assess a signature project delighted the delegation.

The following teachers and students need to be thanked for their previous work and direct contribution to the visit’s success: Mr. McComb & Quinn Edgington—Thermal Energy Unit, a.k.a. Heat Shield Project, Mr. Davolt and Olivia Shiffer—Career Readiness Program and Boeing Internship, Ms. Dyer and Sophia Cassam—Port of Seattle Environmental Challenge Project, Mr. Joshi and Patrick Galt—Flight by Design, and Ms. Branch and Joe Merlino—Private Pilot Ground School and ACE Club.

Last Thursday, it was my pleasure to meet many of you during the Evening of Learning.  The overwhelmingly positive compliments about our teaching staff, instructional program, career readiness program, and school culture were appreciated. During the welcoming address, I offered five action items to assist you with making school life just a little bit better…

·         Read the NOTAM—our weekly communication vehicle shares invaluable information about the available scholarships, college visits, mentoring and internship opportunities, Sports of the Mind team updates, clubs activities, counselor updates, key deadlines, and general school events.

·         Be aware of the various ASB sponsored clubs: ACE, (Airline Career Experience); AIAA, (American Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics); Culture, Film, Math, and NHS (National Honor Society).  ASB clubs meet after school and regularly publish announcements about their meetings and events in the NOTAM.

·         Connect with our platinum-level PTSA and explore opportunities to serve and make new friends.

·         Participate in our accreditation survey. Our goal is 75% parent participation and you can complete the survey in 5-8 minutes.  Please follow this link to launch the survey— http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/9444118

·         Share feedback with teachers and support staff about the positive impact they’ve made.

RAHS is a wonderful and very active community. Occasionally, we are double booked. Our goal is to manage the events to keep them from crashing into each other—but that is not always possible.  The best way to learn about the hundreds of activities and opportunities offered throughout the year is to carve out time each week and read the NOTAM.

Key Due Dates:

Pathfinder Applications, October 1

Rolls-Royce Scholarship Essays, October 17

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

After School Club Leaders: Ms. Wombold—Culture, Mr. Gudor—Math, Dr. Edgerton—ACE,

Mr. McComb—AIAA, Mr. Savishinsky—Film, and Mr. Peterson—National Honor Society.

PTSA—the baked-potato bar and dinner buffet served on Thursday for the entire staff were superb!  We were honored by Bonnie Demaree and her team’s creativity and preparation.  They added a delicious respite to our extended day.  Thank you.

RAHS Spirit Squad—for your positive energy shown during the Friday lunchtime competitions. Great planning and effort!

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Now accepting applications for Space Explorers!

Gain real-world experience while conducting authentic scientific research on a NASA mission project.  The Student Planetary Investigators (PI) program is waiting for your participation!  Student teams will have the opportunity to learn about Mercury in new and exciting ways!  Through the use of mission software, students will have the opportunity to explore the surface of Mercury, and possibly have their work featured on the MESSENGER (http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/) website!  Through the Student PI program, students will gain valuable experience in technical and scientific skills as well as practice in essential soft skills such as teamwork, public speaking, asking thoughtful questions, and research methodology.

The program is free and open to teams of students across the country. The program is conducted via distance learning technologies and is designed to provide maximum flexibility for student teams while they work directly with NASA mission scientists. The Student PI Program was created by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Space Exploration Sector, Education and Communication office with support from NASA mission and instrument science and engineering teams.

The Student PI Program focuses on the MESSENGER spacecraft, currently orbiting Mercury.   MESSENGER followed a path through the inner solar system, including one flyby of Earth, two flybys of Venus, and three flybys of Mercury. This impressive journey yielded the first return of new spacecraft data from Mercury since the Mariner 10 mission more than 30 years ago.  Student PI participants make authentic contributions to this effort through the analysis of image data. Students (under mentor guidance) join the science team in analyzing real MESSENGER data, using the same software and techniques the mission scientist would use. Students develop hypothesis and projects based on data analysis, later presenting their work for peer and science team review.  Apply today to join this historic mission! For more information on Student PI, email bgrigsby@suhsd.net.  to participate, complete an application today at http://studentpi.jhuapl.edu/application/.

YCCC (YOUTH CAPTURE THE COLORFUL COSMOS)

The Harvard-Smithsonian Center YCCC (Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos) is a program designed to offer the opportunity to explore and learn about the universe through the experience of hands-on astrophotography.  The students learn how to control robotic telescopes over the internet to gather raw data, how to manipulate that data using astronomic image processing software and finally how to display the image to the public with explanatory text about the object and the techniques used to create the image.

The goal of the YCCC program is to promote increased interest, awareness, and knowledge of astronomy content, understanding of technology and proficiency in real scientific research skills.

The classes will take place after school on Fridays.  Sessions will run about 90 minutes.  Watch for more information in future NOTAMs.

Quote of the Week—submitted by Maren Gibson, RAHS sophomore.

I confess that in 1901, I said to my brother Orville that man would not fly for fifty years. . .  Ever since, I have distrusted myself and avoided all predictions.

— Wilbur Wright, in a speech to the Aero Club of France, 5 November 1908.
