Principal’s
Message
As you review this week’s calendar, please note the large
delegation of VIPs visiting us on Tuesday. Our distinction as a Lighthouse Model of STEM
Excellence continually attracts interest from points around the globe. When an
opportunity presents itself for potential replication of our signature
programs, we honor the request and allow delegations to observe our practices
within the natural rhythm of the school day.
With this visit, I trust our community will benefit from the reciprocal
learning tied to Boeing’s sponsorship of South African STEM education programs
and aviation industry, and glean insights from the VIPs representing Germany
and Romania. Personally, I am very excited about this delegation and want to
thank Reba Gilman for the hours of
coordination and planning that were required to bring everyone together.
Last week, I enjoyed meeting with Paul Belshaw, Senior
Vice-President of Rolls-Royce Northwest.
During our visit, Paul reiterated the commitment of Rolls-Royce to fund two
scholarships of $5,000 each (or combination not to exceed $10,000) to two Raisbeck Aviation High School seniors who plan to
pursue an education and career pathway in engineering. The Rolls-Royce Spirit of Excellence Award, began in the 2011-2012
school year and is named after their passion for excellence, epitomized
in Henry Royce’s famous phrase: “Strive for perfection in everything. Take
the best that exists and make it better. If it doesn't exist, create it. Accept
nothing nearly right or good enough.”
Mr.
Belshaw asked if we would announce the names of the scholarship winners during
the Student
of the Quarter assembly on November 5.
I hope you will agree that the Spirit of Excellence Award fits perfectly
with recognizing and honoring our amazing scholars. With this year’s plan to announce the
scholarship recipients earlier in the calendar year, the deadline for the Rolls-Royce Scholarship essay is moved
up to Friday, October 17th by
4:00PM. The criteria for this scholarship can be found by navigating to the Students
tab found on the RAHS website and clicking on Rolls-Royce Scholarship. Students, please review the criteria and
follow all of the directions before submitting a hard copy of your essay to Mr. Kelly by the October 17th
deadline.
This week, we continue with the theme
of scholarships. The Pacific Northwest
Business Aviation Association (PNBAA) holds its Regional Forum in Seattle
and sponsors a charity golf tournament on Wednesday. PNBAA designates one half of the proceeds to
Raisbeck Aviation High School for scholarship awards. Austin
Coleman and David Lindberg will
represent RAHS and swing their clubs like pros at the Newcastle Golf Course
that day. Let’s wish them well and thank
them for doing the honors on behalf of this year’s seniors who will contend for
the PNBAA scholarship money later this school year.
A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who
make RAHS a better place.
Sports of the Mind Team
Coaches: Scott McComb, Science Olympiad, Robert Steele, First Robotics Competition, Stephanie Jones-Gunn, First Tech Challenge, and Garrett Shiroma, Speech and Debate. All of our coaches reported a great student
turnout for the first week of practice and information sessions. Did
you know that over 40% of RAHS students participate in Sports-of-the Mind
teams?
Michelle Juarez—accolades from the Big
History Project. Last year, Michelle received
specialized training in Michigan and then piloted the Big History course for a
group of freshmen. She has already
caught the eye of the Big History organization for her innovative lessons. If
you’re interested in learning more about the Big History Project, please read
the recently featured article from the New York Times-

Rolls Royce and PNBAA for funding $15,000 in scholarships for RAHS students!
Parents, please plan to join us this Thursday. I look forward to seeing all of you at our Evening

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

YCCC (YOUTH CAPTURE THE
COLORFUL COSMOS)
The
Harvard-Smithsonian Center YCCC (Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos) is a
program designed to offer the opportunity to explore and learn about the
universe through the experience of hands-on astrophotography. The students learn how to control robotic
telescopes over the internet to gather raw data, how to manipulate that data
using astronomic image processing software and finally how to display the image
to the public with explanatory text about the object and the techniques used to
create the image.
The
goal of the YCCC program is to promote increased interest, awareness, and
knowledge of astronomy content, understanding of technology and proficiency in
real scientific research skills.
The
classes will take place after school on Fridays. Sessions will run about 90 minutes. Watch for more information in future NOTAMs.
