Principal’s Message

I am thrilled to report a smooth re-entry back into the 2014-2015 school year.  It is the second year in our permanent home and the striking difference of having everything unpacked and organized before we open the doors to students is noted. Wow!  On opening day, our ASB leaders launched the back-to-school assembly with great energy and challenged each of the classes to compete for spirit points. The results from the first week show the Class of 2015 in the lead with 325 points. Senior Power!

As we moved into Thursday, the freshmen and new students received their laptops. On Friday, our scholars in AP Spanish reported having their first test of year.  Next week, our students will see VIPs on campus—students, be prepared to connect with industry leaders and members of delegations visiting our campus all year long.  RAHS is an amazing place that offers authentic opportunities to develop your professional behavior and networking skills.  Along that vein, I would encourage you to apply for one of the 75 spots open for the Pathfinder Gala. Please read through the NOTAM for more details and submit your application to Mr. Davolt by October 1.

Remember to mark your calendar for our Evening of Learning, on Thursday, September 18th.  The program for our Evening of Learning will be emailed next weekend to parents and guardians. Students, your parents will be attending your classes that evening, so please fill in your schedule on their invitation.  Parents, please bring the invitation and your child’s schedule with you (paper copy or on your mobile device) that evening so that you can make your way to classes on time.  Paper copies of the program will also be available at the front desk.

Students should not be on campus that evening UNLESS asked by a staff member to assist.  We love you, scholars, but we simply cannot accommodate all of you as well as your parents. This time, it is your parents who go to school rather than you.  Enjoy sending them off and be sure to ask them what they learned when they come home.  In addition to attending classes, we are offering one session prior to the official start of the program at 6:00 p.m.  If your schedule permits, consider attending Helping your Student Succeed at RAHS from 4:50-5:35 p.m., which will be facilitated by Counselor Katie Carper and staff.

A Round of Applause—my chance to publicly acknowledge individuals who make RAHS a better place or deserve recognition.  Thanks to the following students and ASB Advisor, Ms. Fitzpatrick for a wonderful opening day assembly: ASB President Gabby Rivera, Vice President Navath Nhan, Secretary Jessi Mau, Treasurer Makoto Take, Designer Nicole Do, Technology Director Karl Nielsen, Coordinator Jackie Madson, Senior Class Captains Erin Ronald and Austin Fischer, Junior Class Captains Zahnae Aquino and Bryant Nguyen, Sophomore Class Captains Ashley Balbuena and Matt Vredevoogd, singer Aileen Nguyen, Phoenix mascot Vincent Pierce, and Spirit Squad Co Captains Carlos Navarro and Kirsten Noble. The costumes and props worn by our RAHS staff during their introductions at the assembly were a hit!

The Raisbeck Aviation High School Skunk Works Robotics team officially ended its 2014 competition season on Labor Day weekend by traveling to San Jose, California and competing in the ‘Chezy Champs’  Best of the West competition.  The Skunks were counted among the best on the field and came away with the “Quality Award” which also includes a $1000 prize from NASA.  The award is on display in the lobby.  Congratulations!

Honored to serve as your principal—Bruce Kelly

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

The first meeting of the Skunk Works Robotics FRC team will be on Tuesday at 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Mr. Steele’s Room.  We welcome back all of the members of last year’s team and some new members that participated last year in FTC Robotics.  Come ready to get to work!  We have lots of activities planned for our 9th season of competition!!   Students are also urged to attend the free premier of a new movie called “Underwater Dreams” which is the story of a high school robotics team from Arizona that competes for the first time and wins against college teams like MIT.

The showing is at 7:00 on Thursday night at Southcenter AMC.  It is a pre-release screening and all robotics team members (new, old, parents or mentors) are invited to attend.  Please visit the http://www.firstwa.org/ website for more information and to sign up to come.

Our team’s first competition this year will be in the Girls Generation competition this fall with an all girls team.

This year’s honorees include:  Captain John Cashman, Colonel Joe Jackson and Jack Wimpress.  Students from any grade are invited to apply through a one-page essay. Seventy-five RAHS students will be selected to attend the event on 10/25/14. Applications and additional information are now available in the Career Center.

MENTORS & MENTEES - The industry professionals who mentor RAHS students play a significant role in the professional preparation and development of RAHS students.  Make note that the Mentor Breakfasts will be:  October 8, December 3, January 21, March 18 and May 22 this academic year. Please initiate communication with your mentor now, and set up times to get together, including the breakfast meetings.  Sophomores will be hearing more about the program and those interested in participating will be paired with a mentor in October.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP students need to finalize their paperwork to achieve district credit.
