Principal’s Message
Thank
you to all parents who attended last week’s Evening
of Learning program and to all students who assisted. Parents, we observed that you were engaging
and responsible learners. Very few of
you were roaming the halls without purpose! :- ) Please know that your enthusiasm and
appreciation for our new school and our talented staff were felt and
heard. Thank you for demonstrating your
support of your student’s learning as well as for the vision and mission of our
school. Don’t hesitate to schedule an individual
conference with staff if you have concerns you wish to address.
Congratulations
to all students who participated in the Golden
Age of Aviation Gala last Friday evening.
It was fun to see you in the attire of the 1930’s—fur stoles, top hats and
tuxes, silk scarves similar to those that Amelia often wore, elegant gowns,
jewels, feathered hats or hair adornments—you were the picture of the era, as
noted in a photo taken with James Raisbeck, which is now posted on our website. Thank you for supporting the Museum in their
fundraising efforts that benefit educational programs, including ours.
Congratulations,
too, to ASB for recently sponsoring the Mike Smith all-school assembly; to
Honor Society for again sponsoring a blood drive with record student
participation; to Ultimate Frisbee for finding a practice field and getting
underway with their fall season; and to 100 students whose names were drawn
through a lottery to participate on the Alaska Airlines Flight on October
17!
For
those selected for the flight on October 17: If, for any reason you are NOT
able to participate, please let Mrs. Hiranaka know ASAP so that we can allow
another student the opportunity.
Approximately 60% of our students submitted their names, but only 100
will be able to participate. We wish it
could be everyone, but the remaining seats will be filled with alumni,
dignitaries and a few parents and staff.
The day will be grand for everyone, though!
Pathfinder
will be held October 26 at the Museum of Flight, which is another opportunity
to attend a formal event and meet inspirational aviation/aerospace
leaders. Applications are due to Ms.
Burr tomorrow, and Etiquette Training will be held after school on October 10.
That’s
it for this week, Scholars. Cheers for
an audacious week of learning! Honored to be your principal—
Reba
G.

development. Students who already have a mentor, make note that the mentor
breakfasts will be: Oct 23, Dec 4, Feb 26, Apr 23 and May 28 this
academic year. You are encouraged to initiate communication with your mentor
now, and set up times to get together, including the breakfast meetings.
Sophomores will soon be hearing more about the program and those interested in
participating will be paired with a mentor in October.
Our
INTERNSHIP program has exceeded our wildest expectations with over 170
students working and learning in real world experiences. Students who have held
internships over the summer need to submit a one page reflection and the total
# of hours worked to Ms. Burr ASAP. (If you worked at the Museum of
Flight, they will submit your hours for you but we still need a
reflection).
The
World’s Forum for Aerospace
Leadership, the Pacific Northwest AIAA, will be hosting their symposium

Parents:
How to Respond in a School Emergency
Student safety is
Highline’s number one priority. Our schools have safety plans in place to
handle natural disasters, security issues, and other emergency situations in
coordination with local police and first responders. Parents can help us keep
students safe by following the tips in our emergency
response plan.
Here are some emergency
DOs and DON’Ts.
Emergency DOs:
- Check our website. We will post
the latest available information on our homepage. Check back frequently
for updates and instructions on when and where you can pick up your child
if parent pick-up is necessary.
- Follow us on Twitter. Check our
Twitter feed @highlineschools for the latest information and
updates.
- Get connected. Make sure we
have your current phone number and email address so we can reach you
quickly with an automated call or email about an emergency situation.
Update your contact information online and on your school emergency
card.
Emergency DON’Ts:
- Don’t rush to the school.
Coming to school may put you or your child at greater risk. Additional
people on the scene distract first responders from their primary
job—student safety. Instead, check our website, Twitter feed, your email,
or your phone for information and instruction.
- Don’t call the school or
district office. Resources are stretched thin during emergencies. Incoming
calls take away from our ability to get updates to you through our
website, email, and phone calls.
Please remember we will provide information as quickly as we can
without compromising safety. In some cases, law enforcement instructs us not to
share information about a situation in progress. This is for the safety of your
child and all involved.
Statistically, school is the safest place for a child to be. We are committed to the highest levels of safety in all our schools.

Raisbeck Aviation High School? Do you
have 1or more days per week that you can spend as a volunteer? Perhaps you
would enjoy helping out our office staff by answering phones, tackling small
miscellaneous projects and keeping the office clean and organized. Contact Office Manager, Emily Thatcher for
details. 206-631-7203.
SAVE THE DATE for our 7th annual dinner and auction on Saturday, Nov 2nd,
2013. Auction packets went home

A note from
Mrs. Flynn:
Hi Everyone!
Now that you are settled in your new school, I want to thank you
again for the wonderful send-off you gave me last spring. The assembly, signs, flowers, food, cards,
and yearbook all were wonderful. You
touched my heart. Of course, I have
re-read the cards, signs and yearbook several times, thinking of every one of
you.
Have a wonderful year ahead in your beautiful building. I miss you!
I loved being your teacher.
Thanks again,
Mrs.
Flynn
Quote of the Week & aviation history
“I confess that in 1901, I said to my brother Orville that man would not fly for fifty years. . . . Ever since, I have distrusted myself and avoided all predictions.”
— Wilbur Wright, in a speech to the Aero Club of France, 5
November 1908.
On
5 October 1905 Wilbur Wright completes his—and the world’s—longest flight yet,
at 24.2 miles in 39 minutes and 23 seconds.
