Principal’s Message

Thank you for making our opening week such a success!  I loved the spirit that you exhibited in our opening day assembly, and so did our guests. Thank you, ASB, for teaching us the Phoenix cheer and how to correctly say R A H S!  Some of us may need more practice, but you modeled the way for us in grand style! You set the tone for a positive week of learning, gratitude, and fun!

In spite of a few challenges with IT, lack of parking spaces, long lunch lines, and work still underway both outside and inside, quality learning was occurring last week from Day #1.  We assure you that we have listened to issues that are bothersome and inconvenient, and we are working to resolve them.  Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Regarding parking:  This week, additional parking will be available as a result of construction trailers being moved off site.  In October when the Museum finishes laying gravel on the property that is on the south side of our school, even more parking space will become available.  In the meantime, if you arrive on campus and find no place to park, the Museum has given permission for us to use their parking lot across the street if space is available.  There is also a King County lot directly across the street from us that we encourage you to check out prior to using the Museum’s space.  If you drive to school, it is absolutely essential that you allow some extra time to find parking and get to class on time.  Please plan your day with this in mind.

An additional reminder to parents regarding parking:   Please do not park in front of the school when you drop off or come to pick up your child.  The area in front is reserved for school buses only.  Thank you, parents!

So…students, do you know where the Mike & Melinda Hubbard Classroom Wing is located?  Or the Scott and Linda Carson Wing?  The Esterline Wing?  Do you know where the Rolls Royce Classroom is?  Or the Skylane or Malibu Labs?  Do you know that we don’t have a gym in our school, but we do have a Boeing Presentation Center (BPC)? Do you know what the PLC is and where it is located?

If you didn’t notice the names above classroom wings or doorways last week, please be Eagle-eyed this week as you make your way throughout the school.  Each of you is an ambassador of our school, and it is important that you know our history.  The names you see represent individuals or companies who supported the construction of our new school.  There are many more than those I’ve mentioned in the previous paragraph. I encourage you to find them all and begin to learn their stories.  Currently, we are working on development of storyboards for each of our donors and major supporters.  The storyboards are approximately 3 ft. high and 6 ft. in length and will be installed on the blue/yellow paneled walls in each corridor of the school.  We are referring to these corridors as “galleries”. When completed, there will be a total of 38 storyboards with inspiring images and messages for you and our frequent visitors to enjoy and appreciate.  We hope to have at least 10 storyboards up by grand opening on October 17, so stay tuned.

Invitations to our fall curriculum night, An Evening of Learning, scheduled for Thursday evening September 26, are being mailed home this week to parents and guardians. The invitations include a message from me, along with the evening schedule of events.  Students, your parents will be attending your classes that evening, so please fill in your schedule on their invitation.  Parents, please bring the invitation and your child’s schedule with you that evening so that you can make your way to classes on time.  Students should not be on campus that evening UNLESS asked by a staff member to assist.  We love you, scholars, but we simply cannot accommodate all of you as well as your parents. This time, it is your parents who go to school rather than you.  Enjoy sending them off with a “Have a great time in school!”, and be sure to ask them what they learned when they come home.  :- )

An annual tradition for our school is to take a large group of you to the Pathfinder Gala at the Museum of Flight, courtesy of various sponsorships from Galvin Flying Service, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Purdue University, University of North Dakota, and many others.   I highly encourage you to apply for this opportunity, particularly if you have never attended.  It is magnificent!  See Ms. Wooley in the Career Center this week to pick up an application and learn more about the event as well as this year’s recipients. Applications will be due October 1st so get a head start on writing your essay.

Please read the Announcements section and enjoy the Quote of Week and Aviation History lesson that will be included in each edition of the NOTAM.  It isn’t likely that you will get to read all of the NOTAM in class, but now that you have your own laptop, there is no reason not to read it each week!  It is posted on our RAHS website as well as the PTSA website— http://www.aviationptsa.org/

May your second week at Raisbeck Aviation High School be even better than your first!  Make it so!  And, if you need help adjusting or have questions, don’t hesitate to seek out an administrator, counselor, teacher, or other staff member.  We care about you.

Honored to be your principal—

                                                            ~Reba G.

Attention Freshmen: Are you interested in being in student government at RAHS? The Freshmen Class Captain Meeting is on Monday, September 16, 2013, during lunch in Mrs. Fitz's room. As a representative of your class you'll be in charge of organizing dances and fundraisers as well as speak on behalf of your class. You'll serve as an important voice on behalf of your class.

Please welcome Mike Smith (Live) who will be coming to RAHS on Tuesday and speaking to the entire school. Mike Smith has made a commitment to live life intentionally, and will be speaking to us about how we can do that here at our own school. He'll be sharing his stories about giving back to our community, servant leadership, and how it has enriched his life.

Project AmeliaTHANK YOU to everyone who supported Jaclyn Wing's efforts with Project Amelia this past year! You are the reason for its success and we raised $1700 just from Raisbeck Aviation High School, which then was then matched by Mike Hallman at the Museum of Flight!  Amelia's Model 10E Electra will be arriving at the Museum of Flight THIS Saturday, September 21st! I am looking forward to seeing how this new exhibit will inspire others, just as Amelia has inspired me. For more information on Project Amelia, please visit http://www.museumofflight.org/electra and like our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ProjectAmelia.

From the career center

“The Pathfinder Gala” is an annual formal event at the Museum of Flight which honors 3 professionals who have made major contributions to aviation/aerospace. Students from any grade can apply through a one page essay which will be due 10/1/13.  About 75 students will be selected to attend an Etiquette Training on 10/10/13 and the event on 10/26/13.  See Ms. Wooley in the Career Center this week to pick up an Application Packet!

Professionals MENTORING our students is a significant part of our RAHS student development. Students who already have a mentor, make note that the mentor breakfasts will be:  Oct 23, Dec 4, Feb 26, Apr 23 and May 28 this academic year. You are encouraged to initiate communication with your mentor now, and set up times to get together, including the breakfast meetings.  Sophomores will soon be hearing more about the program and those interested in participating will be paired with a mentor in October.

Our INTERNSHIP program has exceeded our wildest expectations with over 170 students working and learning in real world experiences. Students who have held internships over the summer need to submit a one page reflection and the total # of hours worked to Ms. Burr ASAP.  (If you worked at the Museum of Flight, they will submit your hours for you but we still need a reflection).

The World’s Forum for Aerospace Leadership, the Pacific Northwest AIAA, will be hosting their symposium at our school on Saturday, November 2, 2013.  Hundreds of aerospace professionals will convene to attend interesting workshops about designing new aircraft, mining asteroids, and spending time in space.  You can register to attend on your own, or, you can volunteer to help at the event for community service hours- 13 spots available.   More information in the Career Center and from Ms. Burr.
