Principal’s Message

Welcome to your new school—Raisbeck Aviation High School!

It is a grand and glorious day for all of us, after a nine-year journey of being nomads in search of a permanent home. Today we celebrate the opening of this amazing place of learning that came to be through the vision, inspiration, tenacity, and efforts of so many.  Take it all in this week as you learn the layout of your new school, and know that it will be perfectly fine to give a cheer when you discover some new feature that makes your jaw drop! And…please be patient as you settle in.  You will see work crews frequently over the next few months, both inside and outside the school, as they complete remaining tasks.  Be assured that we will eventually have everything in place, and just enjoy the transformation as it unfolds.  The end result will be spectacular!

As I wrote in my summer letter to you and your parents, our late start to the school year means that we must make up three days during or at the end of the school year.  Please plan to come to school on the following three days:

·         October 11, 2013—full day of school, dismissal at 3:30 PM

·         February 18, 2014—full day of school, dismissal at 3:30 PM

·         May 16, 2014—half day of school, dismissal at Noon

On the make-up days, the Highline School District will provide bus transportation to and from school; the cafeteria will operate as usual with breakfast and lunch served, and learning will be engaging and meaningful, as is the norm at RAHS.  Please mark these days on your calendar now and plan to attend.

Laptops will be distributed this week to each student—yet another reason to celebrate!  Each of you will receive a laptop that will be yours for the duration of your time at RAHS.  Your instructors will be reviewing guidelines with you this week for management and learning.  We know that you will keep yours in good repair so that you are fully advantaged whether you are using it in school or at home.  Please plan to use the one that is distributed to you this week, even though you may already have your own.  Teachers will explain why this is critically important

A grand, grand opening celebration is being planned for October 17.  The entire student body will be involved in activities throughout the day.  Stay tuned for specifics, including how parents can participate that day.

Please be sure to read the rest of the NOTAM for important announcements and opportunities.  We post the NOTAM to our website late day/early evening each Sunday.  Make it a habit to read it each week to ensure that you are well informed and ready to take advantage of experiences that will be offered.

Enjoy your week of learning in this astonishing new place called Raisbeck Aviation High School where the Sky is NOT the limit!  Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

It is a coed, NO-Cut club sport. Any interested students, boys AND girls, beginners or experienced players, are encouraged to attend the first six after-school practices to give the sport a try!! Time at practices and games can count toward PE credit. (See page 6 and 28 of the Student Handbook http://www.highlineschools.org/Page/53 .)

Practices have begun and will continue each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school at Maple Wood Playfield http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=418 through October. Wear soccer cleats, and bring two full water bottles. (Regular athletic shoes are fine pre-enrollment.) Players may enroll for Fall or Spring season, or both. Spring season starts at the end of February and continues through mid-May.

Enrollment forms will be distributed via email, and at practices, and be available in the school office.

Forms and fees are due in the RAHS Office by Thursday, September 19.  Each season (Fall and Spring) is $60, or $110 for both. (Scholarships are available for free lunch participants on request.) The fee covers a team jersey for every player, field rental, league and tournament fees, forms and field supplies, a stipend for our coach, and other expenses.

Project AmeliaTHANK YOU to everyone who supported Jaclyn Wing's efforts with Project Amelia this past year! You are the reason for its success and we raised $1700 just from Raisbeck Aviation High School, which then was then matched by Mike Hallman at the Museum of Flight!  Amelia's Model 10E Electra will be arriving at the Museum of Flight Saturday, September 21st! I am looking forward to seeing how this new exhibit will inspire others, just as Amelia has inspired me. For more information on Project Amelia, please visit http://www.museumofflight.org/electra and like our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ProjectAmelia.

From the career center

“The Pathfinder Gala” is an annual formal event at the Museum of Flight which honors 3 professionals who have made major contributions to aviation/aerospace. Students from any grade can apply through a one page essay which will be due 10/1/13.  About 75 students will be selected to attend an Etiquette Training on 10/10/13 and the event on 10/26/13.  More information forthcoming from Julie Burr, Career Center.

Professionals MENTORING our students is a significant part of our RAHS student development. Students who already have a mentor, make note that the mentor breakfasts will be:  Oct 23, Dec 4, Feb 26, Apr 23 and May 28 this academic year. You are encouraged to initiate communication with your mentor now, and set up times to get together, including the breakfast meetings.  Sophomores will soon be hearing more about the program and those interested in participating will be paired with a mentor some time in October.

Our INTERNSHIP program has exceeded our wildest expectations with over 170 students working and learning in real world experiences. Students who have held internships over the summer need to submit a one page reflection and the total # of hours worked to Ms. Burr asap.  (if you worked at the Museum of Flight, they will submit your hours for you but we still need a reflection).
