Principal’s Message
It’s
week number 3, and I continue to be impressed with your spirit and flexibility
in adjusting to our new home on the amazing campus of the Museum of
Flight! Thank you!
Parents:
We are very much looking forward to seeing you this Thursday for An Evening of Learning. Invitations
were mailed home last week, but if you are missing yours, please see the
schedule that is posted on our website or email us for another copy. Please bring the invitation with you on
Thursday evening with your child’s class listed for each period of the
day. There should be adequate parking in
our lot, but feel free to use the Museum’s parking lot if space is
available. And students: Remember…you
are only to be on campus IF you have been asked by a staff member to
assist. If you drive to school that day,
please park across the street so that more room is available in our main
lot. Thanks!
On
October 17, we will be holding our Grand Opening Celebration. The day will start bright and early with
Alaska Airlines providing a flight from Sea-Tac Airport to Boeing Field/Museum
of Flight for approximately 150 RAHS students plus several dignitaries,
including Governor Inslee! Our jet will
be a specially-themed Alaska Airlines 737-900 ER, which is the latest jet to be
added to Alaska’s fleet. The jet will
deliver students and guests to The Museum of Flight, where we will be greeted by
classmates, parents, industry partners and elected officials, including U.S.
Senator Patty Murray. Joining students
on the flight will be Governor Jay Inslee, internationally-acclaimed engineer
James Raisbeck, for whom the school is named, and other dignitaries. At 10:00 AM, a formal program will begin in
our Boeing Presentation Center with several dignitaries scheduled to
speak. Student led tours will follow the
formal presentation.
Students: If you would like to be considered for the
Alaska Airlines flight the morning of October 17, we are asking you to commit
to the following:
·
Have
the ability to be at our old school in Des Moines by 6:30 a.m. on October 17. You will need to be dropped off rather
than leave your car there, UNLESS you have a ride at the end of the school day
to retrieve your vehicle.
·
Wear
your blue t-shirt that was given to
you on the first day of school, September 9.
Guys, wear dark pants; girls, wear dark pants or dark skirt with your
t-shirt. No exceptions! Media will be taking photos and you may see yourselves
on TV later that day. We are making a
statement that we are Raisbeck Aviation High School!
·
You
must have a genuine, deep interest in aviation and aerospace and be planning a
future education and career pathway that has the potential for landing you in
the heart of the industry. RAHS is about
preparing students for engineering (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, computer
etc.), general and commercial aviation (military too), astrophysics, astronomy,
anything related to space exploration and development, aviation business
etc. You will be conversing with donors
and stakeholders who support our school and hope to someday have many RAHS
graduates in their workforce.
So…how do you
get selected for the flight?
You write your name on a piece of paper, state your grade level, and
cite your education and career goals. An
essay is not required. Then you submit your paper to a grade-level teacher by
no later than end of day this Wednesday!
·
Freshmen: Submit to Mr.
McComb
·
Sophomores: Submit to Ms. Dyer
·
Juniors: Submit to Ms. Juarez
·
Seniors: Submit to Ms.
Wombold
Parents,
I’ll share a bit more about our Grand Opening with you this Thursday
evening.
Students,
are you applying for the opportunity to attend Pathfinder this year? Your
essay is due October 1 to Ms. Burr, and we would love to see students attend
who haven’t yet had the opportunity.
Returning students welcome, too!
See Ms. Burr or Ms. Wooley if you need more information.
Some
of you may know that a near-replica of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10E
airplane landed at Boeing Field this past Saturday, and will now become part of
the Museum’s artifacts. The airplane is
spectacular and will soon be on display in the gallery for all to appreciate. A Golden
Age of Aviation gala is being sponsored by the Museum of Flight this Friday
evening to celebrate the arrival and thank the many donors who made it
possible. Time of event is 5:30-10:00
p.m. and tickets are still available for purchase. For
more information call 206-764-5709. Proceeds support
the Museum’s education programs and provide direct benefit to RAHS students.
Please
read the Announcements section and enjoy the Quote of Week and Aviation History
lesson that will be included in each edition of the NOTAM. It isn’t likely that you will get to read all
of the NOTAM in class, but now that you have your own laptop, there is no
reason not to read it each week! It is
posted on our RAHS website as well as the PTSA website—
http://www.aviationptsa.org/
That’s it for this week, Everyone.
Wishing you an astonishing week of learning, and honored to be your
principal—
Reba G.

“The
Pathfinder Gala” is an annual formal event at the Museum of
Flight which honors 3 professionals who have made major contributions to
aviation/aerospace. Students from any grade can apply through a one page essay
which will be due 10/1/13. About 75 students will be selected to attend
an Etiquette Training on 10/10/13 and the event on 10/26/13. See Ms.
Wooley in the Career Center this week to pick up an Application Packet!
Professionals
MENTORING our students is a significant part of our RAHS student
development. Students who already have a mentor, make note that the mentor
breakfasts will be: Oct 23, Dec 4, Feb 26, Apr 23 and May 28 this
academic year. You are encouraged to initiate communication with your mentor
now, and set up times to get together, including the breakfast meetings.
Sophomores will soon be hearing more about the program and those interested in
participating will be paired with a mentor in October.
Our
INTERNSHIP program has exceeded our wildest expectations with over 170
students working and learning in real world experiences. Students who have held
internships over the summer need to submit a one page reflection and the total
# of hours worked to Ms. Burr ASAP. (If you worked at the Museum of
Flight, they will submit your hours for you but we still need a
reflection).
The
World’s Forum for Aerospace
Leadership, the Pacific Northwest AIAA, will be hosting their symposium
at our school on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Hundreds of aerospace
professionals will convene to attend interesting workshops about designing new
aircraft, mining asteroids, and spending time in space. You can register
to attend on your own, or, you can volunteer to help at the event for community
service hours- 13 spots available. More information in the Career
Center and from Ms. Burr.

How to Respond in a School Emergency
Student safety is
Highline’s number one priority. Our schools have safety plans in place to
handle natural disasters, security issues, and other emergency situations in
coordination with local police and first responders. Parents can help us keep
students safe by following the tips in our emergency
response plan.
Here are some emergency
DOs and DON’Ts.
Emergency DOs:
- Check our website. We will post
the latest available information on our homepage. Check back frequently
for updates and instructions on when and where you can pick up your child
if parent pick-up is necessary.
- Follow us on Twitter. Check our
Twitter feed @highlineschools for the latest information and
updates.
- Get connected. Make sure we
have your current phone number and email address so we can reach you
quickly with an automated call or email about an emergency situation.
Update your contact information online and on your school emergency
card.
Emergency DON’Ts:
- Don’t rush to the school.
Coming to school may put you or your child at greater risk. Additional
people on the scene distract first responders from their primary
job—student safety. Instead, check our website, Twitter feed, your email,
or your phone for information and instruction.
- Don’t call the school or
district office. Resources are stretched thin during emergencies. Incoming
calls take away from our ability to get updates to you through our
website, email, and phone calls.
Please remember we will provide information as quickly as we can
without compromising safety. In some cases, law enforcement instructs us not to
share information about a situation in progress. This is for the safety of your
child and all involved.
Statistically, school is the safest place for a child to be. We are committed to the highest levels of safety in all our schools.
