performance into our second District event.
Go Skunks!!!
Last weekend, we were showered with bursts of RAHS energy and Phoenix pride! Our Science Olympians successfully competed at the regional event; Culture Club hosted the 2015 Lock-In; the Skunks continued perfecting their robot, and our student ambassadors conducted 62 interviews for the Class of 2019. Congratulations to the Science Olympians who have qualified for State—their names, and the notable finishes of the studiers and builders appear in the New Announcements section.
In addition to the weekend activity, our Career Center announced several summer internship opportunities. The following companies and organizations are recruiting RAHS students: Astronics, Boeing, Raisbeck Engineering, and the Museum of Flight. Stop by the Career Center to pick up an application, and read the Career Center section of the NOTAM for further details about each internship. As a career-readiness reminder, students, please call, text, or email your mentor before the following week’s Mentor Breakfast—develop your business communication skills and connect with your mentor punctually and regularly.
As we begin this week, please remember you course registration forms for 2015-2016 school year are due back to your advisor on Friday, March 13. The registration process is designed to encourage dialogue with parents, and support a student’s decision about their core academic and elective classes. The forms require a parent signature, and are can be turned into to your advisor on or before Friday.
How rigorous of a schedule should you pursue? When considering whether or not to take an Advanced Placement (AP) course, there are several factors that drive the final decision. I’ve overheard a student say to their friend, “Take the AP XY course, because it will look great on your transcript!” I agree that AP courses offer advantages for college admission decisions. However, if the sole reason is to place an AP ornament on your transcript, I suggest stretching a ribbon of yellow caution tape around that thinking. It is important to evaluate your current academic progress in that content area, and weigh the demands of every curricular and extra-curricular commitment. Remember, each AP course is approximately two hours of homework every night. Ask your current teachers for their counsel. Choose wisely, and aim for a balanced life.
The
Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a
better place.
Congratulations
to Edson Smith who earned his
Boy Scout Eagle Rank.
Congratulations to Science Olympiad member Keir Hichens, and his friend, Michael
Spitz, who found two fossils and donated them to the Stonerose Interpretive
Center. Keir and Michael found a fossil
of a winged stick-bug like insect—a first of its kind and a new species which
has been named after Keir: Eoprephasma Hichensi. An aerodynamically related fossil unearthed
by a RAHS student is a first!
