Principal’s
Message
Last
Saturday, the Flaming Penguins and Skunks came home with impressive victories
from their respective competitions. Congratulations are in order to the
Penguins who qualified two students for nationals, and the Skunks brought home a
Quality Engineering Award, and another blue banner for their first-place finish at
the regional competition. Saturday
marked a fabulous performance for RAHS, our sports-of-the-mind teams, and
coaches Mr. Shiroma and Mr. Steele. Let’s now cheer for the Science Olympians and coaches, Mr.
McComb and Ms. Weeks, as they
prepare for their regional competition next Saturday.
As appropriate, remember to add any award and
accomplishment to your college-going resume. The recent conversations at my house—with two
high-school daughters, are focused on the dollars and sense of paying for
college—that is, common sense. The sticker shock of tuition bills
and textbooks prices are a financial and sobering reality for most students and
their families. One of my top-five wishes as Principal is to support our
seniors and their families by increasing the amount of scholarship awards.
After
investing years in rigorous study, mentor relationships, and industry
internships, the students in class of 2015 are poised to realize their dreams
for college and career. That takes
money. As my dad often said, a
scholarship is O.P.M.—Other People’s Money. With the generous support of our PTSA,
partners in the aviation and aerospace industry, and many friends, this year,
RAHS is offering a record amount of support. The scholarship awards range from
$400 to $40,000, and the total value for 2015 exceeds $170,000!
I
am thrilled to announce that our 2015 scholarship packet is now available. To view the packet, visit the RAHS home page,
click on the Students Tab, and locate the link, 2015 Scholarship Application. The
application link appears along the bottom of the left-hand navigation pane.
Please
review the application packet carefully to decide which scholarship aligns with
your college and career goals. Paying
for college is a critical concern, and for that reason, I’ve added the
application checklist and the list of awards to this week’s message.
RAHS

FROM THE CAREER CENTER
INTERNSHIPS
ASTRONICS
– is a leader in
custom, rugged and reliable electrical power systems for harsh
environments. Products include power generators, power distribution
systems, electronic circuit breakers, lighting controls and cabin power
distribution systems. The Electrical Engineering Internship will offer a
challenging experience that utilizes engineering software tools, such as Solidworks
CAD software to assist in the creation of engineering drawings and parts
documentation. The intern will assist in testing products in environments
simulating aircraft installation. Test efforts will include assisting
experienced staff in set-up and operations. The intern will gain experience
utilizing engineering software tools, understanding aerospace product
development and the ability to work with experienced engineers. Applicants will
be asked to commit to 4 full days/week for this paid position. Submit your
cover letter, RAHS transcript, resume with teacher reference by March 12
to Steve Davolt in the CAREER CENTER.
PATHFINDER --- “The Pathfinder
internship was a valuable way to meet individuals who have changed aviation and
aerospace history. As an intern I sat in on meetings, helped prepare the final
version of the presentation at the Pathfinder Gala, went to a reception at the
Raisbeck estate, flew in Mr. Morton's private plane, toured the Boeing Renton
plant, led orientation tours at RAHS, and had the exciting (and a bit scary)
experience of introducing ‘my’ Pathfinder to 450 people wearing formal attire…
It is a great way to get perspective and advice about the best ways to pursue
an aviation career. If you are looking for flexible hours and a chance to learn
from the aviation greats it is the perfect opportunity for you.” Abby
Eades, Pathfinder Intern 2014.
“The Pathfinder
Logistics Internship was a unique opportunity that has improved my
communication, organization, and networking skills. As the logistics intern, I
recruited musicians to play at the Gala, organized the VIP’s visit to RAHS, and
structured the etiquette training for student attendees… The internship led to
many opportunities to network with the Pathfinder award recipients, their
colleagues, and employees at the Museum of Flight. I am grateful to have helped
organize such a momentous event to honor aerospace and aviation leaders.”
Sophia Gut,
Pathfinder Intern 2014.
This exciting
opportunity is open to seven RAHS students. For further information,
watch for details in the CAREER CENTER and in the NOTAM. Be ready with a copy
of your application letter together with your current transcript and
references. Details to follow.
