Principal’s Message

Welcome back, scholars, and Happy New Year!  I look forward to hearing from you about your vacation and trust that you enjoyed a wonderful time with family and friends.  It is important to dedicate time specifically for a chance to relax and recharge. Do you feel a new wave of energy to continue your learning and finish the first semester with a spark?  As a reminder, January 23 is the end of the semester.  There will be no school for students on Monday, January 26.  Teachers will submit semester grades to Ms. Sorensen during the last week of January and the report cards will be mailed home during the week of February 2-5.

Last Saturday, our Skunks learned the theme in this year’s robotics competition: Recycle Rush.  It is a very exciting time and I want to wish our FRC team the best of luck.  Over the next six weeks, our Skunks will be building their robot, assisted by coaches and mentors.  They have their sights set on finishing strong at the international competition in St. Louis. With all of our sports-of-the-mind teams engaged in competitions, or preparing for competitions, let’s also cheer for our Science Olympians and Flaming Penguins.  Our teams are encouraged by early tournament wins and they are positioned to improve upon last year’s success!
While on the topic of sports-of-the-mind teams, there is another piece of great news to share. Our long-term partner, Alaska Airlines, approved our proposal for ticket vouchers.  Alaska Airlines donated twenty round-trip coach fares to support our sports-of-the-mind team travel requests and included a pair of first-class round-trip tickets for the PTSA auction. The value of the donation is $34,100.  Alaska Airlines earns gold stars for their lavish support! We are blessed by Alaska Airlines’ generous commitment to our community.

This Thursday, a VIP delegation from the Society of Chinese-American Aerospace Engineers (SCAAE) arrives to learn more about our instructional program. SCAAE is a professional organization with a mission to advance the well-being for the Chinese-American aerospace engineers, to provide a network forum for our engineers to exchange the technical knowledge, and contribute to local communities. SCAAE has over 500 members from Boeing, Honeywell, UTC, GE, Northrop-Grumman, Parker Aerospace and other aerospace companies in Southern California, Seattle and Texas. Last fall, the SCAAE Board approved a scholarship donation for $10,000 to RAHS!  Be sure to introduce yourselves, and seniors, look for the details about the scholarship in the forthcoming scholarship packet.
As we welcome in 2015, there is important announcement concerning The Museum of Flight.  The Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary!  For more information about the Museum’s history, click the following link—http://www.museumofflight.org/mof50.  Along with the planned events and celebrations, work crews will break ground for a stunning expansion of the covered air park. Beginning very shortly, RAHS will notice activity in the gravel area between the school and the Simonyi Space Gallery. On Friday, February 13th, a crew will temporarily take down several light poles in our parking lot. The following day, the 747 will be tugged to a temporary location just outside the southwest corner of the student parking section. The relocation of the 747 poses a minimal impact on student parking.  Stay tuned for subsequent updates in the NOTAM.

The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Ms. Jones-Gunn and Ms. Weeks—for planning and organizing a wonderful staff holiday party.  Inviting our families was a real plus!

Navath Nhan and Gabby Rivera—Rotary Students for the month of December.

Makoto Take, Matt Vredevoogd, and Navath Nhan—sponsors of the first Dudes Donut Day

Mr. Minor—who delivered a passionate, humorous, and inspirational message to the dudes during Dudes Donut Day.

Alaska Airlines—amazing corporate sponsor and long-term supporter of RAHS!

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Quote of the Weekcontributed by Maren Gibson, RAHS sophomore.

We are thinking of building a machine next year with 500 sq.ft. surface. . . . If all goes well the next step will be to apply a motor.
