Principal’s Message

If he were still alive, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 86 last Thursday. Unequivocally, his message and unwavering stance for social justice and racial equality carry implications for today.  On Tuesday, we pay tribute to him, acknowledge the positive changes, and press on to realize the dream reverberating throughout his honorable life and iconic speech.  As an exercise, I encourage each of you to take action, and spend 15 minutes on a social-justice issue this week.  There is great opportunity—locally, nationally, and globally to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
Last week, following the presentations of the 10th grade CWP projects, one of the guest judges remarked, “I always leave here inspired!” Another veteran judge quipped, “Today; I heard the best presentation ever! These students are amazing!”  Please accept my sincere appreciation for your hard work, stellar accomplishments, and true professionalism shown throughout the first semester.  Your efforts and final products are lauded by our community and the staff.  Congratulations are in order for our Science Olympiad coaches, Mr. McComb and Ms. Weeks, and our Speech and Debate coach, Mr. Shiroma, for their teams’ fantastic finishes last weekend. The names of the individuals walking away with awards appear in the New Announcements section below.

Please join me in officially welcoming Ms. Debi Tranholt to RAHS.  Ms. Tranholt is our new office assistant for the Career Readiness Center.  She starts her orientation to the Highline School District this week and arrives in time to support the mentor breakfast on Wednesday.  Previously, Ms. Tranholt was employed as an office manager for a large chiropractic office.  She is thrilled to be here at RAHS.  Students and staff, please stop by and say hello this week. Welcome aboard!

Interview Teams for the Class of 2019
Students, if you are interested in supporting the Class of 2019 interviews, please add your name to the sign-up sheet in the lobby—see the display table in the southeast corner.  Your volunteer effort earns community service hours. A single shift is 3.5 hours in length.  It is possible to serve for one-half day or all day on a Saturday.  A training session for all interviewers is scheduled for January 29th at 3:45PM or January 30th at 8:15AM. You only need to attend one training session.  If you interested in serving on an interview team, but cannot attend a training session, please see Mr. Kelly.  If you are selected to support the interview process, your name and assigned duty will be posted outside of Ms. Hiranaka’ s office on Tuesday, January 27th.

The following dates are scheduled for the incoming freshmen class interviews:

Thursday, February 5th   4:00 – 7:30PM             Thursday February 12th       4:00 – 7:30PM

Saturday, February 21st   8:30 – 3:30PM              Saturday, March 7th  8:30 – 3:30PM

Tuesday, March 17th     4:00 – 7:30PM

MoF Air Park Construction Update

A work crew is scheduled to remove the black chain-link fence between the school and the Air Park on Monday, February 9.  ALL students and staff must park on the gravel lot Friday, February 13th and Monday February 16th. Heavy equipment operators will remove and then reinstall the light poles in our parking lot. The 747 and 737 are scheduled to be moved on Saturday, February 14th to a temporary location at the southwest edge of our student parking section.

A Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Josiah Hokanson, Hannah Kaiser, and Tanner and Harrison Korin—superb ambassadors who represented RAHS at North Tapps Middle School.

Fred Bartlett, Andrea Chay, John Combs, Ben Ellison, Tiffany Miller Campbell, Clinton Jones, Doug Hill, Fred Kleinschmidt, Bill Lyons, Miguel Marmol, Amanda Mazzenga, Barbara Sando, John and Niki Tobin, Tina Vandenbosch, Theresa White, and Jim Young—serving as guest judges for the CWP Project Presentations.

Ms. McEwen and Ms. Nurzhanov—serving dinner to the Skunkworks Robotics students and mentors.

Bonnie Demaree—mobilizing forces and transporting hundreds of pounds of food to feed our hungry Skunks.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Please join me in saluting our Olympians for their sportsmanship and fine showing at Camas, and wishing them luck at their next Invitational on Saturday, 7 February when we host 27 teams from around the northwest at Raisbeck Aviation High School.
