Principal’s Message

Welcome back, Scholars!  I hope your Thanksgiving and extended weekend were filled with blessings and good cheer.

We have a busy week ahead of us.  In addition to various meetings of clubs and teams and the usual rigor and excitement of learning, we are hosting Sylvester Middle School for a visit on Tuesday and our second and final Information Program for 8th Graders & Parents will be held Thursday evening.  The schedule for Sylvester’s visit will be as follows:

9:30-9:35         Busses arrive and 175 students are directed to the BPC by former Sylvester students (other Sylvester group is at the Museum of Flight)

9:40-10:10       Orientation Session in the BPC with showcases of extracurricular activities/school culture

·         Jessi Mau—Welcome, College & Career Goals, Highlights of her experiences at RAHS, including MoF internship & Speech & Debate

·         Emilio Anselmo– addresses his college & career goals, ACE Club, internship experiences,  Ultimate Frisbee, what he appreciates about the preparation he is gaining for college and career

·         Lauren Cromcollege and career goals, internships, reflection of four years at AHS/RAHS and opportunities afforded, Science Olympiad (w/ demo of a build project by team members)

·         Westin Miller & Camila Palaciosame as above, with emphasis on Robotics Team (demo w/other Robotics team members)

·         Administration—application process w/Q&A

10:10-10:55     Tours—Classrooms & Wings, approximately 15 minutes per floor (led by former Sylvester students)

·         3rd floor—70 students, 35 West Wing, 35 East Wing/switch

Student ambassadors from classes located in each wing will showcase their learning, students go to second floor next, then first floor

·         2nd floor—70 students, 35 each wing/switch, then go to 1st floor, then 3rd floor

·         1st floor—35 students tour Physics Lab, Prototype Lab, Small Projects Lab—student ambassadors demonstrate learning/showcase technologies & equipment; this group then joins 2nd floor group, 17 going East, 18 going West, then joins 3rd floor group

11:00-12:20     Second group of 175 students arrive, program repeated

                        Orientation—11:00-11:30

                        Tours—11:30-12:15

Teachers will be preparing you today for presentations in each wing.  While we can’t showcase everything that represents RAHS on such a short visit, our goal is to demonstrate how you engage in learning through projects and teamwork that require solving authentic problems that are faced in the aviation/aerospace/STEM workplace and in post-secondary studies.  Enthusiasm for being at RAHS, along with strong content knowledge matters.  We know you will be excellent ambassadors if asked to be part of the presentation team for a class.  My thanks to you in advance!

Many of you will or have been asked to participate in our Information Program on Thursday evening.  Pizza will again be served and the program will be essentially the same as November’s.  The program will start promptly in the BPC at 6:00 PM with introductions of staff members.  Please be in the Commons, close to railings, if possible, to cheer for staff members as they are introduced.  When they are dismissed at approximately 6:15, you should join the staff member you are assisting in his/her class.  Thanks to everyone who is serving as an RAHS ambassador this event!

Gold stars to all students, parents, and staff who participated in last week’s student-led conferences.  It was such a pleasure to see the great turnout each evening, and I heard many positive comments about the value of the conferences.  Our hope is that you now have a deeper understanding of how you are progressing toward meeting graduation requirements and what you can do to get on track if needed.  Please don’t hesitate to enlist the assistance of our staff if you are unclear about how you can best meet, preferably exceed, the requirements for high school success.

Best wishes for a superb week of learning and ambassadorship!  And, go Skunks, Science Olympians, and Speech & Debaters in your upcoming competitions this weekend!  Honored to be your principal—

                                                                                                            Reba G.

Robotics:

Are you interested in volunteering at any of the robotics events coming up sponsored by WA FIRST?  WA FIRST will host 75 events this year with most of them taking place between December 2013 and April 2014 and additional volunteers are needed.  The RAHS community is well aware of the value of this program by watching our Skunks do amazing things.

Our most urgent need at the moment is for adult Judges and referees for the FIRST Lego League (FLL) events, which target students ages 9-14 who build and program a robot to complete a themed challenge.  These events run for a single day on either a Saturday or a Sunday.  We have upcoming FLL events on December 7th, 8th, and 15th in Ballard and Auburn.

To register to volunteer, please visit: volunteer.firstwa.org

Once registered, select the Events tab and choose a specific event or two to volunteer for.  An example of the upcoming events where we need help soon is found here: https://volunteer.firstwa.org/event.php?eid=19

Need a Transcript?:

Seniors:  All students who request transcripts for college applications must pick up the transcript request forms from the Registrar’s office and allow 2-3 days for processing.  When picking up your transcript, please do so before or after school or at lunch—thank you!   If you are requesting an unofficial transcript, please remember to pick them up from the Registrar’s office, but not during instructional time.  Your cooperation is needed and appreciated!

Science Olympiad:

Science Olympians, a friendly reminder that studiers are required to come to Science Olympiad on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while builders are required to come on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Start saving the dates for our Mandatory Marathon Saturdays where you get to practice, work, and compete against your Olympian peers!

Ground Control is here to help you avoid a crash landing during the winter season.

Our communication lines are always open! Submit your anonymous questions to ahsphoenixflyer@gmail.com, tweet them to @ahsphoenixflyer #groundcontrol, or submit them via facebook on the 'RAHS Phoenix Flyer' page for a published response in the upcoming December issue!"

From the career center

Mentor Program – The Career Center staff is working on making new mentor-mentee matches.  Be patient, sophomores, if you haven’t yet been assigned a mentor.

Congratulations to Chris Hendrickson who had an idea for an internship and worked with Mrs. Burr to develop it. Loving history and aviation, he is now an official intern with the Museum of Flight in the Archives Department.

Congratulations to Jimmy Matta who has been accepted to intern with the Museum also as an Ambassador.

The RAHS PTSA enriches student education, supports teachers and staff, enhances parent involvement and communications, advocates for our school and its students, and promotes school spirit.

We—parents, teachers, students, alumni—have an opportunity to take our voice into the future on the PTSA storyboard that will be on permanent display at RAHS.  If you have an inspirational message, Parent-to-Student or Student-to-Student, to help young people be safe, healthy and successful that you would like us to consider for the storyboard, please send your ideas to rdsvader@gmail.com on or before December 6. Thanks!

Thanks to all of you for participating in the Raisbeck Aviation HS PTSA Auction on November 2nd. Your work has again shown that "The Sky Is Not the Limit" to benefit this amazing school. While our final numbers are not yet in, it looks like "you" helped set new records for net income along with overall attendance and gross donations. We expect to have final number and more details to present at the PTSA December 4th general meeting.  We would love to have you attend that meeting in the Boeing Presentation Center at RAHS at 6:00pm on Wednesday December 4th.
