Principal’s Message
A
special thanks to everyone who participated in last week’s hosting of Sylvester
Middle School and our final Information Program for 8th Graders
& Parents. We are all learning how
to play to over-capacity crowds in our new facility, and I’m giving gold stars
to everyone who shared their talents and enthusiasm for our school. The
comments from our guests were plentiful. I particularly enjoyed hearing from
one parent who wrote, “We attended the open
house last night and were completely impressed with what Raisbeck Aviation HS
has to offer students in this community. I work with high school students
applying to college, and I will be the first to say that the typical student
does not have the types of applied learning opportunities that you provide for
your students.” Another visitor who is advocating for admission of her friend’s
son who lives in Los Angeles wrote “It is clear to me after the pleasure of
spending over an hour speaking with students that they are a very special and
exceptional bunch. Never before have I had the opportunity to meet so many
children with such a united focus and drive - it was a powerful and inspiring
experience!”
This week we have the
honor of hosting Cascade Middle School
on Friday, December 13. This group will be with us from 8:45 a.m. to almost 11:00 a.m. so we
won’t be quite as rushed as we were last week. The group is also smaller, with
just 50 students and a couple of staff members.
I will be calling on Cascade alumni and others to assist with the
program, which will be communicated to staff and posted in classrooms by Tuesday. Spirit Squad, we’ll again be counting on you
to enthusiastically greet our Cascade scholars!
We will also be planning
this week for Chinook Middle School’s
visit on Wednesday, December 18.
Congratulations to our
FTC Robotics team on showing amazing progress and talent at their second
competition this past Friday. The team
worked hard through a few setbacks and finished strong in 5th and 13th place. Their next competition is December 20th at
RAHS, where we expect to finish even stronger after two more weeks of practice.
Many thanks to our
student representatives and Ms. Burr who attended the Pacific Northwest
Business Aviation Association (PNBAA) annual holiday meeting last week to thank
them for their scholarship support of our school over so many years. This year,
the PNBAA hosted another golf tournament with proceeds of $5,000 donated to
RAHS for a deserving student in the Class of 2014. Thank you, PNBAA!
The frigid weather of
the past week reminds us that while we aren’t yet into the winter season, there
is reason to be prepared for the possibility of school delays or closures. A
reminder to all that we follow the schedule of Highline Public Schools. District protocol is to implement a
robo-call to all families of enrolled students and also post closures with
local media and on the district website. The same procedure is followed if
school dismisses after the school day has begun.
Please read the
Announcements section for information that will keep you informed about school
events and opportunities. And, my very best for an audacious week of
learning! I am honored to be your principal.
~Reba G.

Quote of the Week & aviation history
“You Americans
build airplanes like a Rolex watch. Knock it off the night table and it stops
ticking. We build airplanes like a cheap alarm clock. But knock it off the
table and it still wakes you up.”
