Principal’s Message

Last week, Raisbeck Aviation High School made the news both locally and nationally.  KING 5 TV reported on the need for high quality training for pilots and aerospace workers, featuring our school’s instructional program as a model for preparing students well for future careers.  Interviews took place in Intro to Robotics, with star speakers being Amber Thatcher and Ian Lichty, but most of the students in the class can be seen in the feature.  If you didn’t catch it on TV last week, the link is:
http://www.king5.com/news/education/Future-aviators-learning-teamwork-saves-lives-in-crisis-235504241.html.  The New York Times also mentioned our school in an editorial about math and science instruction. The link for the article is http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/08/opinion/sunday/who-says-math-has-to-be-boring.html.

Last week, we hosted Cascade Middle School for a visit. Thank you to EVERYONE who participated! Reports from Cascade students and staff were most positive, and it was obvious that there was a lot of interest in our school.  This Wednesday, we host Chinook Middle School from 9:30-11:30 a.m. We will adhere to our regular Wednesday block schedule to accommodate a group of approximately 40 students. We are calling on former Chinook students and a few others to participate in the program.

Congratulations to our Speech & Debate team for the outstanding progress they have shown this year.  This last weekend at Auburn Riverside High School the Speech and Debate team had another successful weekend. Yasin Ali-Halane won 3rd place overall in Novice Congressional Debate and Katie McConville took fourth place overall in Open Extemporaneous Speaking, earning a qualification for state in speech! Open Public Forum Debate team Shailee Stevens and Zahnae Aquino also made it to quarterfinals in debate, just missing final brackets.

Congratulations are also extended to Ms. Fitz and the ASB Leadership Team for hosting an outstanding conference last week, featuring Houston Kraft. Great job on a topic (social media) that if of major importance as you prepare for your futures in education, work, and contributing citizens.

As I was sorting through my mail last week (and tossing a lot of it in the waste basket), I was thrilled to open a letter from the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost of one of Washington State’s premier universities and read that Ms. Wombold was recently named as a recipient of the 2013 Teacher Excellence Award. She was nominated by a former AHS student whose comments in her nomination included, “Ms. Wombold fulfills all the duties of an excellent teacher: compassionate, inspiring, worldly, curious, progressive, life changing. Through her energetic spirit and ability to make even the dullest of subjects interesting, her students find themselves never wanting to leave the classroom. She is accepting of all cultures and people…and while she does not advertise herself to be the best teacher at RAHS or seek recognition, she sure does deserve it!”  Congratulations, Ms. Wombold, and gold stars!  Well deserved.

As we wrap up this week and each head out for a two-week break, I wish you a joyful holiday with family and friends. Please know that I am inspired by each of you and appreciate the special gifts you bring to our learning community. Peace and love to all, and honored to be your principal—

Reba G.

Quote of the Week & aviation history

No flying machine will ever fly from New York to Paris ... [because] no known motor can run at the requisite speed for four days without stopping.

— Orville Wright, 1908

In four flights on 17 December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright succeed in sustained, controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight.  The longest will last 59 seconds and span 852 feet.
