Principal’s Message:

Welcome back from your mid-winter break! Although short, I know that many of you traveled or found time for a favorite hobby or sport. Whatever you may have done, I hope it was invigorating and fun.

Our Skunks spent most of their vacation completing their robot and celebrating with an Ice Cream Social on Monday evening.  The robot is now “bagged” for competition, although work will continue on the practice robot to ensure that the team is as well prepared as possible for Seattle competition March 27-29. A reminder that we will be taking an all-school field trip to Century Link on the 29th to cheer them on. Many of you may want to attend the competition on Saturday, too. It’s free to the public, so invite your family and friends. Good luck, Skunks!

Interviewing has started for our Class of 2017.  Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to serve as an ambassador. We again have over 300 applicants, so selection of 100 students will be challenging. We plan to make decisions by April 1 and will announce the class when acceptance forms have been returned to us.

Thanks to our amazing partner, Alaska Airlines, our seniors and ACE Club members will have an opportunity to fly on a brand new Boeing 737 airplane that Alaska will take receipt of on March 27.  We are delighted that Alaska has again selected our school for a delivery flight, which is nothing short of spectacular! Details are now being coordinated with Alaska and Boeing, including how each passenger will be security checked, departure time from AHS and arrival back to school, etc. These details will be explained in a letter from me that will be on the reverse side of a field trip permission form that you will soon receive. Stay tuned!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our VIP visits last week. Some of you were called on for two consecutive days, which we hope to avoid in the future. Our guests were in awe of your ability to articulate your learning and grateful for the opportunity to interact with you.

We are reminded daily that the flu season is still with us. I’m just now regaining my strength from a bout last week, so I’m reminding everyone to please wash hands often and thoroughly, use hand sanitizer, and stay home when ill. To our health!

That’s it for this week, Scholars!  My best to you for an audacious week of learning!  I am honored to be your principal.
                                                                        ~Reba G.

Eben’s contribution to the title was: 50 free awarded 3rd in State, 100 Free awarded 4th in State, swimming 2nd position in the 200 Free, awarded 4th in State, and anchored the 400 Free Relay, tying with Stadium HS for State Championship with a 3:13:03 time! Congratulations, Eben, for your awards and contribution to your team.  The article in the Sports section of the Seattle Times was also very impressive. It’s obvious you have a very strategic, smart coach! (Note from Reba: Congratulations to ALL of our students who swim for various teams. I know how hard you work throughout the season.  You are all winners!)

Congratulations to both Savan Vekaria and Camilla Palacio for being selected to intern with the Royal Aeronautical Society.  Elsa Aguilar is our lead intern along with Jessica Lewis.

Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology.  The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering.  In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers.  During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty.  They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer.  Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities.  Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from UW admissions counselors.
