Principal’s Message:

Congratulations to our most recent Rotary Students of the Month Chris Lu, Paula Cieszkiewicz, Hunter McSwain, and Reilly Mulligan! They were honored last week at a meeting of the Southcenter Rotary Club for their leadership, service to others, and scholarly achievements.  Ms. Burr reported that the Rotary members were in awe of their many accomplishments and their aspirations for the future.  Great job, awesome students!

ACE Club has reason to celebrate, too, for sponsoring their very first Professional Pilot: Collegiate and Career Symposium this past Sunday at the Museum of Flight. Presentations were made by Alaska Airlines Captains John Sluys, Sid Graham and John Wright as well as Peter Morton, who serves as Past President of the Aviation Accreditation Board International.  ACE Advisor Dr. Edgerton and ACE President Jacob Hoag and Vice President Austin Spores also shared the stage. Great job, everyone, for providing a compelling presentation! Special thanks to Captain Sluys for his leadership in developing the presentation and coordination with other panel members. It is so obvious that our current pilot workforce is committed to ensuring that there is a pipeline of future pilots to fill the gaps that are predicted to occur in their career field. Our AHS pilots have a bright future ahead!

The Association of University Women (AAUW) annually recognizes junior women for their accomplishments in science, technology, and math.  I am very pleased to announce that Aviation High School’s 2013 honorees  are Lauren Crom for Science, Camila Palacio for Technology, and Sasha Friedrich for Math.  They will be recognized at a special ceremony in May, along with recipients from other high schools.  Congratulations Lauren, Camila, and Sasha!

For the past month, we have been placed an announcement in the NOTAM about the NW Aviation Conference & Trade Show that will be held February 23 & 24 at the Puyallup Fair Ground.  It’s now time to sign up to man our booth! You will earn volunteer hours for participation as well as a certificate.  Most importantly, it is an extraordinary opportunity to learn about opportunities in the aviation industry and to network with the many attendees.  Our Wingman Tamera Nason is again heading up this effort, and she needs time to coordinate with AHS ambassadors prior to the event.  If you are interested, please sign up in the Main Office ASAP! FYI that there is also an opportunity to attend the Trade Show on Friday, February 22.  If you are interested in being part of this field trip, please see Dr. Edgerton ASAP. School bus transportation will be provided.)

And, our students just keeping more and more internship opportunities through our Career Readiness program! Congratulations to Noah Palmer and Jaclyn Wing, who have been selected for paid engineering internships with Hobart Machined Products! Congratulations, too, to Elsa Aguilar who has landed a full time internship with the Office of Aerospace Medicine at the Federal Aviation Authority next summer.  This was a result of Elsa’s earlier meeting for an informational interview. Congratulations also to Max Kenyon who has been accepted to a month long summer program at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he’ll be studying engineering + medicine.  Max interned with the FAA in the Office of Aerospace Medicine last summer, which might have contributed to his acceptance into this competitive program for next summer. Special kudos to Ms. Burr for coordinating these magnificent experiences for our students that will enhance their knowledge and skills and provide a story for college applications that will be unique!

I am encouraging everyone to get behind the Amelia Project, which is being coordinated at our school by Jaclyn Wing. I know we would all love to see a replica of Amelia’s plane on display at The Museum of Flight, but it takes lots of $ to make it a reality.  Jaclyn has teamed up with Museum board members to raise funds to contribute to the cause. A board member has offered to provide a $25,000 match if we can raise that amount.  Let’s do it!  Donations can be made by anyone, male or female, but should give tribute to a woman when made.

I close my message by thanking everyone who participated in our VIP tours and professional development programs last week.  Your ambassadorship is tremendously appreciated!  Please read the Announcements section for important information and opportunities.  My very best to all for an audacious week of learning and a sweet Valentine’s Day! Honored to be your principal--
                                                                        ~Reba G.

Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology.  The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering.  In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers.  During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty.  They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer.  Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities.  Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from UW admissions counselors.

The application for the 2013 Math Academy is now available online in PDF format at www.uwmathacademy.org
Applications are due on Friday, March 15. A representative from Math Academy will be presenting at 1 PM in room 17 on Wednesday, February 13.  Please sign up with Ms. Carper if you are interested in attending the presentation.
