Principal’s Message:

Our Science Olympians rocked it this past weekend as they played host to 22 teams from around Washington and Oregon at their 6th Annual Invitational.  The competition tested students’ scientific and engineering knowledge and skills. As we have come to expect, our AHS Olympians comported themselves with tremendous sportsmanship, learned from the successes and set-backs, and performed to high standards.   It was so impressive to see them cheer for each other as awards were announced; but most importantly, it was so gratifying to hear them say, “We did better this time; we’re learning more; we’ll do even better next time!” They are a hearty bunch of young scientists, engineers, and innovators who contribute immeasurably to the culture of Aviation High School. Congratulations to all, with specific acknowledgement to the following for notable finishes:

·         In Remote Sensing and Astronomy, Lauren Crom, Sasha Freidrich, Caitlin Schaefer, and Andrea Wooley tied for 2nd overall
·         In Chem Lab, Forensics, Materials Science, and Thermodynamics, Jessica Mannard and Dustin Werran placed 3rd overall
·         In Gravity Vehicle, Boomilever, and Write It / Do It, Mike Huynh and Gurinder Chhokar placed 4th overall. Bridget Heiland and Zibraan Ali placed 5th in Boomilever.
·         In Mag Lev Vehicle, Carlos Navarro, Joshua Stueck placed 3rd while Hudson Hohimer and Jason Snodgrass placed 5th.
·         In Elastic Launch, Fermi Questions, and Robot Arm, Allen May and Kishan Vekaria placed 3rd overall, and Michael Torrey and Austin McHenry placed 5th.

Congratulations to Head Coach McComb and Assistant Coach Dyer for their superb inspiration of the team and to all the AHS staff who helped make the invitational possible.  Special thanks, too, for all the help from parents, guardians and boosters! Event supervisors and proctors (Mr. & Mrs. Vader, Mrs. Lemley, Mr. & Mrs. Young, Ms. Weeks, Mrs. May, Mr. Wooley, Mr. Albertson, Mr. & Mrs. DeWeese, Ms. Sando, and Mrs. Crom), photographer Mrs. Huey, and support staff Mr. Albertson, Eben and Mrs. Schumann, and Mrs. Spielberg  are greatly thanked, too, for their outstanding support.

Our very best wishes, Olympians, at Regional Competitions March 16 at Highline Community College.  Mr. McComb advises, “Since luck favors the well-prepared: prepare well, Olympians!”  Mr. McComb also tells corny jokes when awards are made.  The audience seemed to particularly like his “engineering majors and frogs” joke, and so did I, so here it is for all to enjoy:

A boy was crossing the road one day when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.

The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful Princess, I will stay with you for one week." The boy took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to his pocket.

The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful Princess, I'll stay with you and do *anything* you want." Again the boy took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally the frog asked, "What is it? I've told you I'm a beautiful Princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do *anything* you want. Why won't you kiss me?"

The boy said, "Look, I'm engineering major. I don't have time for girlfriends, but a talking frog is really cool."

Ah…Mr. McComb, you gotta love him! And we all know that our AHS future engineering majors aren’t like the boy described in the joke!

Congratulations to senior, Chad Crooks, on his acceptance to Montana State University.  Chad plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which will be made easier by a $20,000 scholarship award.  We’re proud of you, Chad!

We have a special multicultural assembly this Wednesday, planned by our ASB.  The schedule this week has been revised to accommodate the mid-week assembly, so be prepared for a block day on Tuesday and again on Thursday.

Cheers for an extraordinary week of learning!  I am honored to be your principal.
                                                                                                            ~Reba G.

Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology.  The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering.  In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers.  During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty.  They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer.  Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities.  Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from UW admissions counselors.

The application for the 2013 Math Academy is now available online in PDF format at www.uwmathacademy.org
Applications are due on Friday, March 15. A representative from Math Academy will be presenting at 1 PM in room 17 on Wednesday, February 13.  Please sign up with Ms. Carper if you are interested in attending the presentation.
