Principal’s Message:
We begin the second semester of the school year after an extended weekend to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, to observe President Obama take his second oath of office in our nation’s capitol and deliver his inaugural address, and to perhaps reflect on our own promises to ourselves for a bright and healthy future. In my own case, I thought often of what our future will look like at the Museum of Flight when we occupy our new school in late summer of 2013.  I had the honor of attending and participating in the Museum of Flight’s annual board of trustees meeting in California where the main agenda item was to envision the Museum’s future as they expand their Westside campus, complete with Raisbeck Aviation High school located just north of the current Air Park. Our high school was discussed frequently throughout the weekend, and I was humbled by the truly genuine support exhibited by each and every one of the board members in attendance.  They are excited about our joining forces with their museum community!

As I participated in the discussions with Museum staff and trustees over the weekend, I was keenly reminded of how far we have come since opening our doors in the fall of 2004 to our inaugural class of 103 students who were both excited and anxious about being part of a new “experiment” in education. And, nine years later in 2013, I am just as excited about the next step in our journey, which will provide the opportunity for unparalleled opportunities as we work in partnership with the Museum of Flight. There’s a lot to do to make things go smoothly, so I’ve revisited my work plan for this semester and adjusted some goals and timelines.  I truly hope that you are doing the same with your own plan of work for this semester.  We all need to make every minute count toward accomplishing what’s most important.

As many of you already know, our wonderful Aviation Careers teacher and career coordinator, Ms. Nancy Pappas, has accepted a new position at another school in our district. We are sad to see her leave our learning community, but we are also very grateful for the years of outstanding service she provided as an AHS staff member.  She first came on board to help us fully develop our mentoring program and launch our internship program.  We then asked her to teach the Aviation Careers classes, which gave her the extraordinary opportunity to impact the lives of every freshman at AHS. Her background in aviation as an early member of the Horizon Airlines staff, as well as her experiences in human resources, made her an invaluable staff member.  She will be missed, but I know you join me in wishing her well in her new role as a full time internship coordinator at Big Picture High School.  Ms. Pappas has written a special note to everyone, which I have included in the Announcements section.  Please be sure to read it.

And…worry not if you are wondering who is replacing Ms. Pappas! We are fortunate that Ms. Robin Lee, who previously taught the Aviation Careers class as well as Ground School, and who has an extensive background in aviation as a pilot, flight instructor, and volunteer with the Museum of Flight, has agreed to step back in for this semester. Ms. Lee starts today, so please give her a warm Phoenix welcome.

We have visitors on campus this Friday from the Bellingham School District. They are curious about how we developed our instructional program and want to interact with both students and staff.  We will be visiting classes so that they have multiple opportunities to learn from as many members of our community as possible.

That’s it for this week, scholars!  Have an outstanding week of learning and envisioning your future. I am honored to be your principal. And…see you Friday night at the Talent Show!
                                                                                                ~Reba G.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

“A big shout out and thank you to all of the first semester Aviation Career students.  I have enjoyed working with and getting to know all of you. I am extremely proud of the work you did to prepare for the career fair events – guests were impressed with your professionalism, presentations, and enthusiasm. I am equally proud of your amazing project and time management skills – I am overwhelmed by how you so quickly pulled together and created such a thoughtful ‘farewell’. It meant the world to me (but I think you already know that!)  To all students and staff at AHS, I have felt welcomed, inspired and valued every day – thank you. I am starting my new adventure at The Big Picture School, but hope to remain a bit of a fixture around here as an extended family member – continuing to connect with my wonderful mentees, observing a few projects, and keeping tabs on all the wonderful things you will do at AHS.  My heart is full.”
~Ms. Pappas

Juniors: UW Math Academy is a FREE 4-week residential and intensive math program designed for high school juniors who are interested in pursuing engineering and technology.  The goal of the program is to enhance students’ strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington’s College of Engineering.  In particular, we hope to serve underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and female students and support them in their goals of becoming engineers.

During the program, students will engage with alumni, current students, and UW faculty.  They will tour the facilities of companies like Boeing and Amazon and get a first-hand look at what it means to be an engineer.  Students will get to enjoy their surroundings with trips to Pike Place Market and Snoqualmie Falls, and activities like canoeing on Lake Washington or playing intramurals in UW facilities.  Participants also get individualized college admissions advising from myself  as well as UW admissions counselors.

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship helps low- and middle-income Washington State residents earn bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and health care. The application period is Jan. 7, 2013, through Feb. 18, 2013.  Applications are available at: http://www.waopportunityscholarship.org/page.aspx?pid=992
