Principal’s Message:

Last week I reported that report cards would be mailed home the week of January 21-25, which was in error.  Our registrar has kindly reminded me that they will go out the following Monday, January 28. My apologies for not getting it right the first time!

The semester ends January 17 so exams will occur next week and final projects will be due.  An exam schedule is provided in the Announcements section so that you can plan your study time accordingly.
This is an action-packed, five day week of learning that includes a special MLK Assembly on Wednesday sponsored by our ASB, the Skunks sharing FIRST’s new game for the 2013 season, and our last Information Night for Eighth Graders and Families on Thursday.  Enjoy it all, and remember to read through the Announcements section of the NOTAM for new opportunities and events.  And study for your finals!

Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations there is perhaps no greater challenge facing our country than increasing understanding and cooperation among people of different racial backgrounds. It is a challenge that every new generation encounters. We therefore believe that young people have a particularly important role to play, and hope, through the Princeton Prize, to recognize and encourage young people who have made or are making efforts to improve racial harmony.  Application deadline is January 31, 2013.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations consists of regionally awarded $1,000 cash awards as well as an annual symposium on race.

The Highline High School Jazz Band is looking for their next guitar player! If you play guitar and want to take a swing at jazz, come give our band a try. The jazz band plays a wide range of both contemporary and classic jazz and meets every morning at 6:30am in the Highline High School Band room. This is a great way to get art credit, and there is a bus between Highline High School and AHS. If you're interested, please contact band director Scott Babcock at scott.babcock@highlineschools.org.

If you are currently participating in high school sports and are using an ALE contract, please report to the gym on Tuesday at 12:15 for an information session.  Please see Mr. Kelly if you have questions.

From your ASB:

·         MLK Assembly: The MLK assembly will take place on Wednesday, January 9, in the gym 2:30 – 3:30 PM.  Together, we will celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. King. We are very excited to announce that Houston Kraft will be our guest speaker. He will be staying after the assembly to teach a leadership workshop (3:30-4:30) in the gym and you are invited to attend. The workshop is free, but there are only 60 spots available. Sign up outside Mrs. Fitzpatrick’s door if you are interested in attending. Mr. Kraft has spoken at HOBY Leadership conferences, schools, and workshops all over Washington and across the United States. He is a motivational speaker and leadership trainer who helps students see the big picture and embrace acts of love. He is also an active servant leader in our community.
·         Jostens Leadership Conference:   There were more than 70 students who applied to attend this popular conference. An application review committee read each and every application carefully. It was not an easy process to select the 45 students who would attend the conference because there were so many spectacular candidates. All applicants received an email informing them of their application status. A list of students who were selected is also posted outside of Mrs. Fitzpatrick’s classroom. We would like to thank those of you who applied to attend the Jostens Leadership Conference.

If you were selected to attend the conference, you must attend the mandatory informational meeting on Tuesday, January 8 during lunch in room 22. We can’t wait to see you there!

  • Spirit Shack: We are running a special this week! All white t-shirts (with AHS designs) are $5 this Friday during lunch. Come check them out!
