Principal’s Message:

Brrr…it’s cold outside! Unfortunately, it’s also cooler inside this little ‘ole school than may be comfortable for many of us. I encourage you to bundle up a bit more and enjoy the sun during those times that it decides to peak through the gray of winter. I also encourage you to routinely check the news reports for possibilities of inclement weather that may cause school delays or closures. The school district will also make a robo-call to notify students and families, so please don’t ignore an early-morning call that may allow you to snooze a bit longer until it is safe to travel.

Congratulations are extended this week to the following good people:
·         Members of our amazing Science Olympiad Team and Coaches McComb and Dyer for a stellar showing in Camas this past weekend!  Please read about their success in the Announcements section.
·         Our Robotics Team for quickly organizing and strategizing to design this year’s robot to play the game Ultimate Ascent. If you are curious about the game, an animation is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itHNW2OFr4Y.
·         Hiren Ajudia and ASB for sponsoring a most inspiring MLK assembly last week! I think it is safe to say that speaker Houston Kraft filled our gym with laughter and inspiration unlike we have ever experienced. I observed a variety of reactions as he shared stories about this own life and encouraged us all to be compassionate and accepting.  Thank you, Hiren and ASB for providing a powerful message delivered by a powerful motivational speaker, and for planning a “Character Day Dare” for this week to honor Dr. King’s legacy.  I encourage everyone to participate!
·         Everyone who has served as an ambassador for our Information Programs! We concluded our programs last week, and again the gymnasium was full of students and families interested in learning more about our school.  Some folks were here for a second, third, or fourth time! I received only positive comments about the amazing students and staff, and all were well deserved.  You rock, AHS ambassadors, and I am so very grateful for your leadership.
·         James Raisbeck, whose name will grace our new school, on being selected as an AIAA Fellow! This is a very prestigious award, representing one of the association’s highest honors.  Congratulations, Dr. Raisbeck!

Jacob Hoag and members of the ACE Club, along with Alaska Airlines Captain John Sluys are sponsoring an exciting event on February 10 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Museum of Flight for anyone interested in the possibility of becoming a commercial pilot.  All AHS students and families, friends and neighbors, and community members are invited and encouraged to attend.  A letter will be enclosed with report cards that provides additional details.  Please feel free to share it with others, and if you have questions contact Jacob or ACE Advisor Dr. Edgerton.

As you may have noted in the “What’s Happening this Week” section at the start of the NOTAM, we are being honored with a visit to our school on Tuesday by NASA’s chief administrator, Charles Bolden, accompanied by CEO of the Museum of Flight Doug King and MoF Trustee Mitch Mitchell. Mr. Bolden is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a former astronaut who flew several missions. He is interested in knowing more about our school and how it aligns with NASA’s mission and represents a Lighthouse Model of STEM Excellence for our state and country.  I am inviting a group of 10-15 students and a couple of staff members to a lunch meeting at which they will share their passions and experiences related to space exploration. If not disruptive to semester exams, we may also visit a class or two. Exciting indeed!

My best to all of you as you complete second quarter/first semester of the 2012-2013 school year. Make every minute of learning count!  And, remember that there is no school this Friday, January 18 or Monday January 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Junior and his amazing legacy.

I am honored to be your principal.  My best—Reba G.

From your ASB:
Honoring MLK Week:  Next Monday marks the 84th birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the opportunity to celebrate the civil rights leader’s mission to bring equality and social justice to all. When you take a day off from school next Monday, consider taking a few hours to give back to those in need to keep Dr. King’s mission and memory alive. Also, this week, you will get an opportunity to strengthen your servant leadership skills by participating in many character dares, and hopefully influencing others to do the same. This week is dedicated to honoring Dr. King’s legacy. Each day you will be challenging yourself with a new character dare. How you show this character does not have to be extravagant; it can be as small as pushing yourself to study for a difficult class, to make amends with a friend you lost touch with, to forgive someone who made a mistake in the past, and to speak up when you think something is wrong or someone’s opinions are not being heard. We encourage all of you to become selfless this week! BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, YOU WILL BE PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE, and continue to give more of yourself every single day. #servantleadership4life

We dare you to…

Monday – Persistence
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” –MLK

Tuesday – Motivation
“Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” ---MLK

Wednesday – Forgiveness
“Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude.” --MLK
Thursday – Speaking Up/Taking Action

“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” ---MLK
